Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido is a puzzle-fighting game where you beat the snot out of people by eating sushi from magical Pokemon creatures. This game was developed and published by Nintendo, in cooperation with Indieszero, and was released worldwide for the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch on June 8, 2018. I will be using the Switch version for this LP.

Story

You play as an orphan named Musashi who, after discovering a love of sushi, sets out to spread that love and sushi to everyone; even if it means toppling a powerful empire that seeks to control all the world's sushi.

The LP

This will be an semi-informative hybrid LP consisting of both screenshots and video. I say semi-informative mostly to cover for anything wrong I might say about the game's mechanics as I'm not as well prepared as I usually am for this LP. I kinda just wanna share this wacky adventure with you and not worry too much about being really good at this game.

Spoiler Policy

Please don't spoil anything story related that has not been covered yet.

Update 1 - The Taste of Destiny

The first thing we see after booting the game is the opening. It's just a musical number paired mostly with shots from the in-game cutscenes, but it does give us an idea of what we're in for.

There's also an alternate cut of the opening that can be viewed if you sit on the title screen for a minute.

So without further ado, let's get started.

Before we can actually begin, we need to choose our main character's appearance. I'm going to pick girl Musashi because I like her better.

Oh this is easy, it's oil right?

Huh? Well I guess that makes sense considering the fish situation.

I'll admit I'm not really a seafood person, so I'd be okay with not having sushi ever again. Now if this was world without cows, that would be a different story. I'd die on a hill for beef.

POWs were forced to eat gas station sushi; and yes they fought by throwing plates at each other.

Uh oh, does this mean I'm going to jail for this post?

Did I mention this game has a jamming soundtrack?

Here's the overworld map. We'll be using it navigate the world by moving along this linear path and selecting levels to play. Technically, the first three spots aren't considered levels since the first one is the intro and the next two are also more cut scenes and tutorials. Anyways let's move on to the next area for another cutscene, and this one is animated like my Japanese animes.

: You can call me Franklin. I'm a wanderer on this hungry earth.
: You're clearly in dire straits, but self-pity won't help you. Chin up, young woman!

If there's one thing I would complain about in this game, it's that the sound mixing for these animated cutscenes isn't that great. Most times the background music will drown out characters like Franklin and there's nothing I can do about it. Like for real if there weren't subtitles I would have serious trouble figuring out what he's saying in this scene.

♪ BGM: Franklin's Theme♫

: Never fear. You are in a sushi field, a place where sushi flows from sushi sprites.
: Don't worry about that. I have much to teach you here! You see, there's a lot you can do with sushi here.
: Let's see you link two plates of the same color! Go on!

Alright so, the biggest part of this game is linking colored plates to create plate stacks which will be used in battle. We'll get into combat later, so for now we just need to focus on getting used to linking plates. To do this we can simply touch a plate and draw a line through similar colored plates to link them. (Surprisingly you can play through the whole game with just the touch screen. Getting a stylus is highly recommended.) Alternately, you can move the left stick to move the selection cursor to the plate you want, hole down the A button, and move the left stick to link plates. It's not the ideal way to play, but since I'm capturing this with the Switch docked I don't have much of a choice.

: You mean like that?
: Exactly. Now link as many plates of one color as you can!

We have to practice linking plates a couple more times. When it comes to moving from one plate to the next you can move in the standard up, down, left, right, and diagonals. Also the plates don't have to be right next to each other. If there's a empty gap between plates, you can jump the gap to get to the next plate which is why you can make this move in the shot below. If you're still having trouble figuring out what you can and can't grab, linkable plates will flash white.

: I'm seeing a lot of plates...but no sushi.
: Ah, pardon me! For that, I'll need to have Ara-o return to the shrine for a bit.

: Ara-o, if you please?

Now we're talking! Time to chow down on some sushi sandwiches! What do we got here, cucumber rolls, egg sushi, creamy shrimp, and pineapple? Well of course we gotta have something sweet from time to time! In addition to sushi we'll also find fruit in the lanes, and they have the added ability to heal Musashi's HP after eating them. It doesn't heal for much so don't depend on them too much.

: Whoa! Look at all the sushi!
: Eat up! Link two or more plates of the same color, just as before!
: Yum! I can't get enough!
: I'm not surprised. Don't stop now! Grab as many as you can in one go!
: But you only have 7 seconds to link plates. After that, they'll slip through your fingers.
: The goal is to link and eat as many plates as you can within that 7 seconds. Try it!

So we have to practice linking plates again, but this time there's actual sushi on them. I guess the only new concepts introduced here is that you only have 7 seconds to link plates and that it's not what's on the plate that determines if you can link it or not, but the of color of plate which means we can link plates with egg sushi and cucumber rolls just fine. We'll explore how the different types of sushi play a role in battle later. For now let's just get through this tutorial.

As for the 7 seconds rule...

You'll notice as you're grabbing plates that the blue rim around your current position with start to blink and turn red signaling you're running out of time, and if you take too long you'll lose all the plates you grabbed. Losing plates in a game like this is not something you want to do too often. In case you're wondering what happens if you hit the end of a lane and haven't moved to another in time, you don't lose the plates you've linked but you stop linking plates and get whatever you grabbed. For example, I linked 3 plates and hit the edge of the middle lane, so my combo ends but I get the three plates. Anyways we eat some sushi and the tutorial ends.

: Hmm... That's an interesting jacket.

: You like it? My dad gave it to me when I was a kid.
: From your dad, is it?
: Yeah, but he and my mom disappeared right after the Struggles started...
: That is unfortunate. But seeing you eat has convinced me of one thing.

You got a weird thingy

What is this? Some kind of gear? There's no hole in the center. Does it do anything or is this some kind of knick knack?

: What is it?
: Haha... That would be telling. But I think you'll find a use for it.

What!? You can't just hand me something and not tell me what it does! How is that useful?!

: This all seems kinda fishy. Who are you REALLY?

Well it can't be fishy, there's no fish in this world.

: If you must know... I'm a traveling sushi striker.
: I've never heard of that.
: They pledge with sushi sprites and summon sushi's awesome powers. Some of that means doing battle with sushi, so they're called sushi strikers!
: There are not many nowadays with access to sushi.
: Don't you think that's a shame? Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone could have sushi, regardless of circumstance?
: Whoa! That's a tall order!
: Maybe so, but I'm achieving it in my travels, one person at a time.

♪ BGM: Battle VS Soldier♫

Not pictured is that Kodiak's sprite is wearing overalls and has a mallet, so we can confirm that some sushi sprites have a sense of fashion.

: Hey, what's this "attacking with plates" stuff about? How do I do that?
: Just like before, link at least two plates of the same color! That's the first step...

Alright, time to get serious. So the sushi field has had a few things added since we were last here. For starters, there is now a side of the arena for your opponent which comes with its own sushi lanes.

In the center of the arena is a special lane named the 'Shared Lane' and as its name implies both strikers can link sushi from that lane. It can come in handy when you need to keep a combo going, but it's first come first served so be careful. Another cool thing about the shared lane is that both teams' first sushi sprite influences what kind of sushi shows up on this lane, which is why there are sushi that will not show up on our side of the field like Inari Sushi, orange slices, and strawberries.

At the end of each side is a little table that I will dub 'The Stack Table'. Here is where all you plate stacks go, and it can hold up to five stacks at one time. So let's go ahead and fill all five slots with plates.

While watching the video, you might see a glowing plate from time to time; well that's a special plate that spawns when you link 7 plates or more. The great thing about it is that it can link with anything. (It also provides a damage bonus and plate protection, but we'll talk about that later.)

So now we have all the slots on the stack table filled and I have a sixth on the way and you're probably wondering what gonna happen when I finish collecting plates. Well, what happens is that the new stack will move all the other stacks one slot to the right and the right most stack will be thrown at the opponent for damage. This is known as an 'autoshot'.

: It's easy! Once the table is full of plates, they'll shoot off automatically! Although, that's not the only way to attack.
: After eating sushi, touch a stack of plates and slide it upward to throw it!

So to manually throw a stack, you need to either touch the stack you want and swipe up, or use the left stick to have Musashi stand in front of the stack you want to throw and hit the X button. Using the left stick method is a bit fiddly because you'll snap back to the center after a second so that can lead to you sometimes throwing the wrong stack.

: There you go! You can shoot plates stacked on the table whenever you want! Hit the enemy with stacks of the same-colored plates for a superpowerful combo!

Ah right, you'll want to—

: Yeah, yeah, so you figured out how to shoot plates. Too bad it won't help!
: EAT THIS!

Aw crap...

Update 2 - How I Met My Sushi Sprite

When we last left Musashi, she encountered a strange man named Franklin who offered her some of the forbidden food, sushi. After eating the sushi, Musashi was delighted by its taste and asked Franklin to stop by her village to feed the other orphans. On the way, they were spotted by an imperial soldier and soon found themselves surrounded by the Imperial Army. Among the troops was the ripped general, General Kodiak, who demanded Franklin surrender his sushi sprite, Ara-o. Franklin refused, so he got beat up; and then Musashi stepped up to defend Franklin, and got beat up. The story continues just after Musashi's defeat.

♪ BGM: Preparing for a Battle ♫

This is the pre-battle screen. Here we can get information about the enemy and we're able to swap out which team of sushi sprites we'll take into battle. Since Jinrai's our only sprite, there isn't really any reason to swap teams. In the team box, we see Jinrai starts out at level 1 and his skill, 'Sushi Bonanza' is also level 1. A sushi sprite's level and skill level have different methods of leveling up. A sprite's level goes up by getting experience in battle while the skill level levels up by other means that I'll talk about at a later time.

Over on the right side, we see that Pvt. Unger has 2100 HP and is using an level 1 otter-like sprite named Uszo. Notice the fireball icon around Uszo's skill Super Scout, this is to denote that the skill is at max level meaning you cannot level up Super Scout beyond level 1.

Another thing we can do is change out our 'Striker Specs' or equipment basically. We don't have anything to equip so we'll ignore that for now.

We can hit R to get more information on everyone's skills.

We'll learn about Jinrai's Sushi Bonanza in the actual battle, so let's take a moment to see what Uszo can do.

Allows only the opponent's image to displayed on the live monitor!

What does this all mean? Not much at all, the live monitor, as far as I can tell, is just a little window that shows characters up close while they're fighting and nothing more. (Check my current avatar.) So basically, Super Scout is an otter-ly useless skill.

Last but not least, we can hit R again to see what kind of sushi is being brought to the table.

I'm not too concerned about what the enemy has access to, but it looks like Jinrai's sushi leans heavy on the cyan side so we can probably get a lot of big stacks going if we focus on grabbing cyan plates. The downside to this is that cyan is the weakest plate of all, but for Pvt. Unger we can easily knock him out with just cyan plates.

: My own skill is Sushi Bonanza, which turns all of your plates to the same color.
: You can link all the sushi in your lanes that way! Use it wisely!

Take note of the line up of plates. These plates go from weakest(cyan) to strongest(gold).

Alright there a few more new things added since our battle with Kodiak, namely we can actually see the health bars this time.

Next to each health bar is second meter known as the Sushi Jubilee Meter. Eating sushi fills the meter and when it's full you'll automatically enter 'Sushi Jubilee'. (Think hyper mode)
While in this mode, higher quality sushi enters the lanes, and on top of that any stacks thrown deals 50% more damage. (More on this later.)

There's also the Live Monitor which I already mentioned, and the score counter. I'll be honest, I haven't really tried to pin down what all goes into the scoring system in this game; but all I do know is that if you want a good score, winning the fight quickly helps.

Now I remember Ara-o mentioning something important just before Kodiak interrupted him, but what was it... :thunk:

: Hit the enemy with stacks of the same-colored plates for a superpowerful combo!

Oh yeah! Let's try that by stacking cyan plates. After eating about 26 plates of sushi, Jinrai's skill bar is full.

So let's hit it and see what happens.

Sushi Bonanza turned all the plates on the field a lime green which we scoop up most of them.

When the stack reaches the table, it takes on the color of the strongest plate in the chain. In this case, it was dark blue which is pretty good for a level 1 sprite. We also ate enough sushi to enter Sushi Jubilee. Now our plate stacks have a x1.5 marking to show that they'll hit extra hard when thrown. We unload all our plates and win the fight.

♪ BGM: Won a Match♫

Here's the results screen. After completing each stage you'll receive a letter grade based on your performance. The letter you get is determined by your score. Getting higher ranks mostly comes down to how fast can you win the fight. We also knocked out all three star objectives in one go!

And Jinrai leveled up! His defense stat increases as well as gains an improvement to his sushi lineup. A sprite's defense is mostly just a stat that contributes to Musashi's overall HP, and leveling up the sushi lineup basically means that weaker sushi is being replaced with stronger sushi. (Be sure to keep track of which colors are altered.)

On top of that, Musashi herself has gained a level which means she gets more HP and can throw a little harder.

Update 3 - Gotta Find 1st Gear in My Giant Sushi Bar

We pick up where left off after Musashi's first sushi battle victory. Now that the grunt is out of the way, time to tango with the commander and see what he's made of.

♪ BGM: Republic ♫

But first, we've got a new piece of UI to check out, the menu.

Here's where we do prep work and research. Let's briefly go through some of the options.

Sprite Order: Allows you to view/edit sushi sprite teams. (More on this when we start getting more sprites.)

Striker Specs: Allows you to equip various items like Lane Drive Gear, Favorite Sushi, and Prepared Item. (We don't have any of this kind of stuff, so we'll have to come back to this at a later time.)

Items: Allows you to view/use items.

Catalog: This is where you can get information on cats and cat foods sushi sprites and sushi. (You know, the stuff you've been seeing at the end of each update.)

Well we can't do anything with the sprite order or the striker specs, so let's peek into items and the catalog real quick.

Right now the only item we have is the Exp Charm S which gives a sprite 250 exp. I'm not going to use it anytime soon, in fact, I'm going to horde the snot out of these things to help out spites we recruit later. We can also check out our key items by hitting R.

Sushi sprite essences... Is that why I smell so fi— funky?

And here's your sprite pokedex or whatever. Even though it currently stops at 100 there's more than that. (It's more like 102.)

This fight is pretty much the same as the previous one, just with slightly more health; but there is one thing I would like to point out. So far we know that attacking with stacks of the same color creates a combo, but there are other ways to gain a damage bonus and one of them involves a fair bit of precision. You see, linking big chains is great and all, but did you know that you get a 1.3x damage modifier if you link only plates with the same type of sushi? In the video, I linked 4 shrimp plates and now it'll do more damage than if I linked any 4 plates. (It gets even better when you enter sushi jubilee as the modifier turns into a 2x modifier.)

Now you're wondering why don't I do this the whole match? Well for one, this early on you won't have that many opportunities to take advantage of this; and two, you've seen what it's like to play with button controls! Precision is not something I have right now. :sweatdrop:

Update 6 - Hunter x Hunter Division

Welcome back to Sushi Strikers! Last time Musashi met with the Sushi Liberation Front's head honcho, Masa, and despite a really rocky first impression, Musashi decided to assist the SLF in their ongoing fight against the Empire. We now return with the really cool stuff, war room deliberation.

Now that I think about it, I guess he thought he could compromise his lack of lane gear with a sushi sprite that'll speed up both his and my lanes. He would have an easier time linking plates while I struggle keeping up with the shift in speed.

But like all half-baked plans, he didn't anticipate my natural ability to go with the flow.

Sorry Kojiro, you just can't trip me up with your speed tricks.

Say goodbye to your "sushi for days"!

As long as you hold it as far away from me as possible, I'd be fine with that.

Kojiro then runs off crying, again.

Some say Kojiro's hatred for Musashi spans across many lifetimes and alternate universes. He's even a red head in one of them!

Now that we're done with that distraction, let's get back to what we were doing, seizing this GROVE!!

Have you been like that this whole time? How are you not a puddle of flesh at this point?

: Spot me while I dish out the Sushi Shuffle, boss!

First he reassembles his body and now he wants to dance!?

: Another power? What's this one do?
: Stay sharp, Musashi. They're going to try to rearrange the sushi on the belts.
: Let's mix it up!

♪ BGM: Preparing for a Battle ♫

Star Objectives
- Make 3 or more glowing plates and win.
- Eat 80 plates or more and win.
- Make a 2-hit combo and win.

We've reached the 2nd boss and this big cheese is using a Faeten, the fairy sushi sprite. Their Sushi Shuffle skill is what I call a 'mean' skill, in that you can use this skill to really mess with your opponent. You'll see what I mean in a second.

♪ BGM: Battle Vs. Boss ♫

Unlike every other time we've seen a new sushi sprite, this time Faeten's skill bar isn't full at the start; and it's pretty much gonna stay like that for the rest of the game.

So here's how Sushi Shuffle can be used to be really mean to your opponent. Here, I'm building a stack of blues and then Boyle pops it. Then this happens:

Not only did it rearranged all my sushi, it also broke my linking and cuts my blue stack short. And that's just mean~

: We're punching above our weight here, men! Hit the showers!

HEY I'M NOT DONE DOING MY WHOLE ONE-GIRL ARMY THING!!

: You did well here today. We won a great victory. But our forces badly need rest.

Not to mention Musashi, you've eaten A LOT of sushi. That can't be healthy.

: It seems to me that this Shrine Grove would be the perfect place to fortify ourselves.

And with that, I think it's time we take a break, but we did it! Now with the Shrine Grove under SLF control, what could Kodiak and his men be planning to take out Musashi? Find out next time in Chapter 3!
