Oh, also this bit,

Lucio Sevier has no connection to the lawyers aside from their request for a physician to be granted access. The legal team, also from the Flores settlement agreement group, had negotiated access to the Clint facility in advance and officials from CBP knew of their pending arrival for weeks.

They had weeks to get ready and this was the best presentation they could scrape together.

Highlights is one of those little minipillars of American society that nobody really pays attention to but everyone knows. Every doctor's office, dentist office, church, daycare and preschool across the court has a supply of Highlights magazines for parents to use to entertain their 3-8 year old children while they wait for X.

If you're asking what Highlights is, it's basically a kids' activity book that you'll find in dentists/doctors' office waiting rooms. It's ubiquitous in that way, but I don't know if I can imagine anyone actually subscribing to it.

Serious questions. Why isn't current democratic leadership doing more to impede or stop the child immigrant concentration camps? Or at least, why does it feel like they are doing nothing at all?

Also, what can I do as an average citizen to right these blatant wrongs besides twiddle my thumbs waiting for the next election, and maybe showing up for a protest or two? Are there any organizations such as the ACLU actively working on this problem and making a demonstrable impact?

Honestly it feels like we, only ever posting on the internet to vent our frustrations with political gossip, are still members of the same complacent masses who enabled the Japanese internment camps, South Africa's apartheid, or Hitler's death camps. And it's frankly disgusting.

pro tip - it's an excellent thing to ask distant relatives for as a replacement for a birthday gift for young children. kids love to get poo poo in the mail and it's handy to have magazines like this when you're traveling or out at a restaurant or something and you don't want to give them a device to keep them quiet

Because for the most part they are doing nothing at all. The democratic leadership is functioning as they always do -- protecting rich people interests. A lot of their stakeholders also have shares in poo poo like private prisons and they probably have a vested interest in ensuring that the checks keep rolling in. Part of it is that there are severe limits on what power they can actually wield, but most of it is that they wouldn't be fighting against it very hard even if they could.

This is wrong. There are a number of activists in this thread, and even from a keyboard warrior perspective, the previous iteration of this thread signal-boosted a walkout from "nothing" to "national news" in a day. If you don't feel like you are doing enough, there are many options for you. One of the best things you can do is open, loud, public support for people who are fighting to make a difference (because they, by nature, aren't going to get covered by the news), or you can donate to things like RAINN or the ACLU. Or you can run for office. Or help someone else run for office.

If you're feeling particularly angry and just want to knock some heads in, I understand that, but like, we don't really do calls to violence here. If there were a plan for a riot at one of the camps, say, this isn't how we would spread the word.

It is also the fact that Congress has transferred so much loving power to the executive branch that it makes a lot of the options they used to have more limited. Our laws are broken and for the most part, are designed to support this behavior from the executive branch. The public is just starting to wake up after a long slumber to this realization and by public, I mean white people because PoC have always known.

There's a scene in the West Wing where John Delancie plays a political consultant. When the Bartlet Crew are trying to help along legislation for drug rehab programs. The consultant suggests they not only can the legislation, but can the ENTIRE ISSUE of rehab. During the scene he acknowledges that rehab is both more humane and more successful in combating drugs than prosecution and other War On Drugs bs. But he also believes the American Voters will never, ever support it because the argument will never win a messaging war. "It's too much easier to say 'Just Say No, and everyone else is Soft On Crime.'"

In the show Bartlett himself basically tells that guy to gently caress off with his cynicism. Pelosi and Schumer listen intently and nod along with that guy. I do honestly believe that they want to do something about those camps. But they want to do it nice and quietly once they win the Whitehouse back so the Rs can't tar them with being treasonous open-boarders socialists.

Of course, the Rs will say that anyway, and their base will continue to believe them even when the statements have no credibility, yet for some reason they fear giving them credibility. Its beyond stupid

Hmm, my reach doesn't extend that far, but if you post in the state/local politics thread someone might be able to point you in the right direction with more specific resources. Do you know of a local DSA chapter near you to get involved with? You could also reach out to the Justice Dems for any resources they have for local races they or their affiliates are paying attention to. Our Revolution is also a good org to contact for local politics. They all have emails on their sites and are really responsive :)

Local pol is fast paced and you see the effects of your handiwork much faster than on the national stage so you get more bang for your buck/time there. Then it ripples into state and federal levels. It feels real good to see the effects of your work in real time :)
