I completely missed that the other day Biden said he would bring back the individual mandate if elected, which is literally the least popular part of Obamacare and the part that was put in to give insurance companies something to get onboard with the bill

I have not really heard about a death spiral. Costs never stopped rising for healthcare overall, they just stopped rising as fast

twodot posted:The theory goes, if insurers aren't allowed to charge extra or deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, then people will simply refuse to have health insurance until they are aware that there is an expensive bill coming, where they will then immediately apply for insurance the day before, and stick the insurer with large bills while paying small premiums. If that were to happen then the business of health insurance becomes pure risk for insurers, and they would just decline to offer insurance since there is no premiums they could set that would offset their costs, therefore we need an individual mandate that makes sure that people don't wait until they know that there's an upcoming large bill to get insurance, and that makes the insurance industry happy. In practice, all of that appears to have been just made up theory crafting (except for the part where insurance companies love to be gifted a captive audience by the federal government, that part is definitely true).

Ytlaya posted:The kind of annoying thing about this topic is that the source of what Sanders distaste exists among minorities and women (which isn't exactly much, but I guess technically exists with a subset) is the way the media portrays him; many people (somewhat understandably) take the view that it makes sense to assume that accusations of someone being bigoted should be assumed to be true by default, and there isn't really any way to address that which won't come off as condescending (since people usually aren't going to respond well to "your perception has been manipulated by others in a way that is causing you to act against your own interests"). In my experience the majority of the Sanders hate comes from the #resistance types who are still convinced that somehow Bernie’s attacks on Hillary cost her the election.
