enraged_camel posted:Well, we were talking about trust, which is why I brought it up. Bernie clearly doesn't understand the finer details of the economy, and has not given serious thought to how he would accomplish his goals. Abloo abloo they told me this was bad and dumb on Marketplace and during Econ 101 sundayschool at the Church of Business Other countries have done it and it didn't implode their economy. It's effectively one of the most progressive taxes that's been implemented, and some libs get behind it because it curbs some of the most visible and flamboyant absurdities of capitalism like HFT. Some dumbass economists who wake up in cold sweats because of ~~speculation and volatility~~ instead of climate change will back it too. But I probably just don't grasp the fine subtleties of the economy well enough to have Serious Thoughts about it like this: enraged_camel posted:

the_steve posted:That sounds an awful lot like exploitation. Yeah it's literally applicable to any situation where the situation is "beneficial" to the person being exploited only because of systematic control by the exploiters. You could just as easily say it about people working 39.5 hours or right-to-work or no-union or gig economy "independent contractors". Thinking that it's somehow a counterexample to "businesses routinely do illegal poo poo to exploit you" because the business is paying you is the most NPR neolib "well actually, they pay you!" take. Invariably, people who start hand wringing about Sanders or leftists not understanding the economy or having a plan are either (a) disingenuous exploiters themselves or (b) people who've absorbed the media handwringing about it as being the educated, informed, professional opinion and think trotting it out against Sanders is demonstrating their informed status.

Divot posted:New ABC / Wapo poll that looks quite a bit different than some others already posted ITT. The two with Bernie in fourth are getting all the press and will continue to do so. There's articles everywhere about him falling behind the pack after months of not mentioning he was at #2 or just outright omitting him from results (like MSNBC). Polls are garbage and speculating about them is sniffing the garbage but that's what we're here to do, so my take is the two with him in fourth are more representative of polling "politically engaged" types who are already treating the debates like gameday who've realized Biden's not going to be a publicly acceptable choice long term, so you'll see his support start to fracture between Harris, Buttigieg and Warren. This means Bernie is going to continue to be further back in the ranks in some polls from now on, but doesn't really indicate any loss of support or momentum for him. Of course it doesn't help, either, and he's not going to capture anyone from those camps until/unless primaries begin and he's picked up 3 or 4 wins.

Pinky Artichoke posted:When you insist on seeing it as a team sport, you give up the opportunity to improve. Bernie is 100% in the team sport mindset himself, and as a result he seems to be A-OK with being a sarcastic jerk to young women voters and journalists on camera. While the Bernie fan club all congratulate each other for the point-scoring, potential members of Bernie's coalition are put off because they've just seen the candidate being a dick bag to a person they empathize with. Likewise, when some faction of the Bernie fan club mobilizes to hound some poor girl off of social media because she asked the wrong question in a town hall, you guys are all just delighted with the win for your team rather than recognizing that you've just shown potential coalition members that engaging with Bernie is far more trouble than its worth. Why can't you bros stop high fiving and chest bumping and empathize with the person who's propagandizing killing people with bombs as "Downy-soft limited anti-terror countermeasures"? Oh sorry I meant empathize with the young woman journalist who's propagandizing killing people with bombs. Phew. Almost sounded sarcastic for a moment without that critical distinction.

Also lol at the multitude of ways that article manages not to talk about Bernie's black youth vote, especially young black women, "men and younger people", "he was unable to win over older voters, especially older voters of color", etc. Also, "Twenty percent of men support Sanders and 11 percent support Warren; 18 percent of women are behind Sanders and 14 percent are behind Warren." Yet at least six times in the article we're told he struggles to win over women. Also a reminder when anyone says "postgraduate degree" they're doing so because it includes MBAs and other professional degrees.

KillHour posted:Fivethirtyeight is going on about how much better Biden is doing. How are pundits all so bad at this? Research has shown debates are largely inconsequential to voter opinion, but reporting on debates is impactful because people want to hold opinions that they know will be perceived as informed. All these pundits know this -- it's how you get unapologetic bullshit analysis like Delaney coming out ahead.
