Can anyone recommend an VLP of Persona 4?

I've been watching a playthrough of P4 Golden by a guy called TheNiskel. Possibly not to everyone's taste, but he's chill, doesn't read everything in silly voices and cuts out the majority of the grinding. The playthrough is also a Max Social Link run, so he covers pretty much everything that you can in one run. He also did good playthroughs of Persona 3 and P3P if you're interested.

Can anyone recommend playthroughs of the Fatal Frame/Project Zero series? Voiced or subtitled is fine as long as its taken reasonably seriously.

Are there any good LPs of the Persona 2 duology? There's one on the archave of Eternal Punishment (the second game in the story), but it's about a decade old and doesn't doesn't really go into the mechanics of the game as much as I'd like.

Any recommendations for a video LP of Persona 3? Portable is the most complete version, right?

A guy on Youtube called TheNiskel did LPs of both FES and P3P, as well as P4 Golden. They're 100% runs (minus stuff like filling out the compendium) and he does all the social links, so it's everything you'd likely care about in a single run. That said, he doesn't cover The Answer, the epilogue scenario for FES, and I've not seen a good run of that around myself, so if anyone has recommendations for one, have at it.

Yeah I'm almost through his P4G run and it's pretty great other than the fact that I wish he would just shut the gently caress up some times.

Given the type of people who usually LP RPGs, I'm just thankful he's not reading out every line of dialogue with a 'funny' voice. Talking too much is a sin I can easily forgive.

Are there any decent VLPs of Crisis Core around? Youtube isn't giving me much to work with here, since everything I see epitomises why I try and avoid YT randos most of the time.

He deleted his channel a good long while ago when he got out of making LPs but someone made a backup of all the stuff he did at the time. Try reaching out to him on Twitter, he might be able to help you there.

Can anyone recommend any channels that specialise in RPGs that don't feel the need to read out all the text in 'funny' voices? Not looking for any particular platform, generation, etc (though I'm not interested in anything that focuses on Pokemon if that narrows things down), I'm just trying to find lengthy games played decently by people who don't think they're voice actors.

Bobbin Threadbare's Bioshock Infinite lp is probably exactly what you're looking for. Goes in-depth into the society of the early 20th century, the wars mentioned in the game and racial attitudes of the period the game's set in. Fun!

I was actually talking to ArclightBorealis about Left Alive while we were recording Shadows of the Damned. He genuinely enjoys it and was toying with the idea of doing an LP of it down the line. He's moving right now though, so no idea if anything will come of it, but maybe in the future.

A lot of old RPGs on the archives have that problem. Seems like if you were going to cover an RPG in Ye Olde Dayes, you couldn't just present the story and the mechanics, fights, etc., you had to focus entirely on the story and turn it into a fanfic.

Is there anyone out there who has done good in-depth VLPs of the Shin Megami Tensei series? I'm not particularly interested in the Persona games so much, everyone and their dog has done those so far, but finding good quality LPs of the other games in the series and spin-offs is bloody hard.

Possibly worth mentioning that the GBA version of SMT1 received a fantranslation a couple of months ago. There's some new content with the Visionary Items, that add backstory and details to the plot, nicer graphics and a few demons exclusive to this version. It's based on the iOS port, so the translation's very different in places compared to the Aeon Genesis one everyone's familiar with.

Yeah, the readme that comes with it says that it actually requires a copy of the iOS rom (which all us SMT fans have legally, right guys? :smuggo:) to properly patch. It comes with its own patcher to do the job as well.

Bit of a niche request maybe, but has anyone done any playthroughs of Metal Gear Solid 1-4/Peace Walker, but looking at them through the lens of MGSV? I imagine there's a lot you could get out of that, what with all the retcons, revelations and just straight up irony Phantom Pain adds in retrospect.

He's definitely been bad for it in the past. He had a really bad habit of hyping up a cutscene, then blabbering all over it to the point where he drowned it out. Not seen any of his newer stuff, but it was really distracting.

There's also another mod that gives your soldiers maximum stats.

The former is very much what I was looking for. Loved the original XCOM and still play it today, but TFTD always felt like an unfair, unfun slog that you had to metagame to beat, so thanks!

IIRC, the difficulty got jacked WAY up in TFTD because there was a bug in the original XCOM release that reverted any difficulty selection back to "beginner" and having players complain that XCOM was too easy

Infamously so, I think the bug wasn't even discovered until years and years after the release of the original XCOM

Rocket Baby Dolls posted:

I might consider it after my Freelancer LP is done. Its been 20+ years since I last touched TFTD though and this mod has made it even more alien to me. If I attempted to do an LP it would most definitely be in any way or form, high strategic detail.

I have played and completed the original Xcom many times over the years. My experience with completing TFTD for the only and only time didn't make me want to revisit any time soon.

If I LP this game many people will die, many, many people!

I started a second game, my first one just being a trial to get a feel for the changes: in three months, I was averaging about 3-4 deaths per mission. Even for an XCOM game, it's a friggin' meatgrinder!

I'm only two months in and I've lost two people in four missions. Both of those people were lost in one mission and I quit out of a mission last night because of the same "Alien Presence" encounter. I don't know if you've encountered it yet but there's a mission type where you encounter half a dozen huge jellyfish type creatures on a very small map, who are massive bullet sponges, can move far and can one-shot your men. I'm not usually one for abandoning a mission when it starts going downhill but I had three of those bastards just descend on my men at the same time, my current weapons are lovely and these things need at least a dozen bullets to be taken down.

So far, the mod has been quite interesting. There are a lot of weapon choices very early on after some minor research, a bit too many for my taste as I think too much choice is a bad thing sometimes. There are new mission types with new alien types which seem interesting so far but I haven't read the lore behind some of these choices yet. One of these mission types I've experienced twice and it's quite random playing them without context behind it. The new starting base layout is confusing at first and some of the new room types are very confusing to me at the moment like the Outpost and the inclusion of being able to use a space to add an empty corridor. I'm going to keep playing it, I'm enjoying it so far despite some of the added bullshit on top of the already bullshit game mechanics.

"Undersea activity" missions? Yeah, they're not fun, I think they use a mix of new enemies and terror mission heavy units, but with their stats buffed. It doesn't help that, unless I'm missing something (which is very possible, there's a lot of new poo poo in this mod), there's a very long period where you're forced to chose between rifles with high ammo capacity, but low accuracy, like the ADS rifles, or decent accuracy, but low ammo, like the jet harpoons (and if you pick weapons with a low ammo count in a classic XCOM game, you're braver than I). The laser rifles you can use on land missions are loving glorious by comparison, but I've not found a Gauss equivalent yet.

There was a series of VLPs I saw years ago (I don't think it was an SA-made LP) that covered each of the games in the Legacy of Kain series in order, that went really in-depth into the connections of each game, but, unlike other LPs that just infodump later plot points from the end five seconds after meeting a new character, they'd say 'remember that for later' and bring it up again once it made sense. They were really well done, almost closer to a podcast at times, given how much they went into things, and made a lot of sense of the, admittedly convoluted narrative. I know this is vague as hell, but does it sound familiar to anyone?

mpg specialises in SMT streams as a whole and just finished a playthrough of P5R today. It's not entirely a blind run, as he's played the original a couple of times and it's not a 100% run, he says because he doesn't want to be sitting there with a guide every step of the way, but he handles it better than most folks I've watched and doesn't read all the non-voiced text in dumb voices. He does stumble a little with the new content, but in fairness, he's playing it on Merciless difficulty and beats almost all the bosses first try. If you like Voiceofdog's stuff, i'd say he's along those lines: pretty chill, talks to the viewers every so often, but lets the game speak for itself by and large.

The only Dark Souls LP that I've watched is the one done by Geop & Vicas and it's very enjoyable: https://lparchive.org/Dark-Souls/. It's definitely not lore-heavy or a 100% run but it's very entertaining.

Hard to imagine these days, but ~*Lore*~ playthroughs/dumps weren't actually a thing for Demon's Souls for a long, long time, the primary draw was always the fact that this was The Hardest Game That Has Ever Existed (Git Gud Remix). People were intrigued by the interesting item descriptions, but it was a while til people started piecing things together. Then Dark Souls came out and it was off to the races.
