yeah! i think you might actually be really into it because i was (vaguely) following a tutorial that was all about doing weird stuff with nodes which iirc is the origin of rodtronics in the first place: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pi1MxqpmKw

it is actually all bump maps and no textures to speak of

might be time for an upgrade

they are seriously so good.

if i was the blender foundation i would pay him to do one for every feature because it is such a great way to get introduced to all the blenderparts with minimal context

I'm pretty sure Ian Hubert or cgmatter did it with video once and they made sure to only use like every five frames or something to avoid redundancy

he is so good at choosing how much effort to put into each part of a scene. I guess that is just the power of experience.

Whenever I try to create something i feel like I spend 96 hours on the hubcap and then forty five minutes on the rest because I'm sick of it.

but bump and displacement might be more fun

hey Echi have you ever used adjustment layers in photoshop?

i just learned about them today and i think a few of the things you've said about how much you prefer nodes over photoshop layers might actually be moot if you use them

there's still a notion of layers/stacking BUT they are applied nondestructively so you can tweak them like nodes while masking them like layers

Corla Plankun

yep! sounds like you're familiar with them. I actually have the same lack of intuition (but the other way around) regarding understanding what exactly i'm operating over in blender, whereas photoshop makes more sense to me. its probably just one of those things that comes with experience and practice

your process produces great results so i'm certainly not advocating switching to more photoshop or anything, i just thought adjustment layers seemed like something that could mesh with your way of doing things

The still looks great, but the constant pattern kind of kills it in motion. Maybe the random seed for the pattern should change with the frame so it looks like an entirely new picture is being painted with each frame?

on the other hand, I think it is really really cool that the paint stays in place on the objects themselves

i think cgmatter usually bevels specific edges in edit mode instead of using the modifier or vertex groups, which might help?

i was able to almost immediately create floating garbage by accidentally bevelling twice but other than that it seems good

how does blender know what materials to put on a thing i made with geometry nodes?

i'm trying to scatter two different things with different materials, but it seems to just be using the first thing's material for everything

does anyone know what this weird deflated-looking animation style is called or how it is done? I see it a lot in 3d shitposts so it seems like it must be common enough that someone has explained it

ben levin actually answered this in his most recent vid!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n0mLWHukvM

the "inflated" look is just from using subdivision surface smoothing or whatever on regular squarish meshes and then doing bone stuff with it. I think y'all probably could have explained this if i asked my question better, sorry

i used python to make some manually-iterated fractals when i first started using blender and it was fine but it's basically just typing the things you would be inputting into the boxes on the nodes anyway so i'm not sure it would be more useful than the nodes themselves unless you find yourself making a bunch of nested/iterated nodes by hand

ty for posting this and i'm having fun following along but it never ceases to amaze me that someone like this guy (or cg matter) can be so good at blender and 3d and also so bad at using math/cs/parameters to make things easier. All this business with bounding boxes and constants for the position could be eliminated if he just scaled the cylinder instead of the position

Actually that might be very useful, some extra detail to encrust on top of the handmade stuff. I never noticed that one existed.

When I was doing those sensor spires I found there were no good references for them so I made my own concept art by slapping a sensor mast off a naval ship onto a cathedral spire.

that's delightful!
