It's like he (Mookie) resolves basic obstacles quickly but keeps prolonging any real development of the major story. Which is pretty much how Dominic Deegan proper moved, of course. I recognize this part of the story, there's a mystery and the protagonist is kinda curious and in trying to find out will come across some larger conflict. That's... like the first 10 minutes of a movie. We're on page 60 of this nonsense if I'm reading the site correctly. That's nearly 3 issues of a normal-sized comic book. Even comics that are specifically "written for the trade" don't move like this. Also Snout is really the only character we've met so far and he is so boring. Visually in particular. I didn't think you could get more generic than "Wizard nerd guy" but here we are.

MiracleFlare posted:How do you give a monster man the saddest, most boring dick ever The nudity in this comic is really an odd choice overall. Like, it's not erotic in any sense- I may be limited in my reading of this, being a hetero dude, but then I'm pretty sure so is Mookie and he's not exactly trying to sexualize the character at any rate. Which is fine, nothing says nudity has to be sexual. (It's not really used for humor or any other emotional response either.) But it's also completely gratuitous. It's clearly meant to be like "Well, this is how the character is" but it never feels like a natural matter of fact thing. It's there so he can say "look at how daring I'm being, drawing this guy's wang. I am artistically mature." Of course my other idea is that he's decided "Is naked a lot" is a character trait (which, sure), and like all other character traits in a Dominic Deegan strip must be hammered home and explicitly stated by the characters.

I honestly think the pacing is about the same as it was in DD, but it's more notable because of the difference in format. Dominic Deegan moved slow as Hell, but there was lots of meaningless banter, there'd be an attempt at a hook at the end of most strips (in the "Oh no we're falling down a mountain!"/"Never mind we're okay" sense), it updated more often, etc. You had to follow it to notice that absolutely nothing was happening. Here there's no dialogue (or interesting art) to fill the vast empty spaces (where we used to taaaaaalk)

Oh God this has no relevance to anything who CARES Jesus Christ what a damp squib Okay I'm drat sure The End of Prophecy is supposed to be a big dramatic thing and it'll turn out not to mean what they wanted us to think it meant, like Mookie's trying to do a Mystery Box. But yeah, this is like something you'd hint at in page 1 of your epic fantasy saga, some enigmatic quotation that'll come to make more sense later. It has taken us months to get here.

Yeah this sequence is a bad idea. All you have is the possibility of visual spectacle, and Mookie just isn't at a level where he can deliver that. It's all still very simple, schematic line drawings with no sense of depth or lighting or anything else that would convey atmosphere. This should be cinematic, it's a montage, it's big sweeping helicopter shots and widescreen vistas, but he just never learned how to draw cool landscapes so here we are.

We already have our protagonist-centered morality, the bad guy is bad because someone says he is! Was wondering when that would creep up. Also I just realized like you could have her painting pictures in the sky that would convey this information and ACTUALLY not be dialogue but that would be difficult so no

This is the webcomics equivalent of the part in Manos: The Hands of Fate where they spend like 20 minutes just driving looking for the Valley Lodge. But with worse visuals.

I think it'll be a while before we get to a sex scene, we're now in some pathetic "Oh how *risqué*" scenario. Just, none of this makes sense. Why did Snout even get naked if he's so self-conscious about being naked next to her? Like if he's just naturally a nudist kinda guy, with minimal contact with other people anyway, he'd likely be all "Oh this is perfectly natural". That's just how he lives right? Doesn't know anything else. But if he is aware that other people aren't always comfortable being around naked people, maybe he then keeps his pants on or makes some accommodation? Like there are so many ways you could have played this. It's weird how adding frequent gratuitous nudity has made this feel even more repressed. It's like the anti-Oglaf.

You think before committing to drawing in a ton of nudity to your strip you'd make some effort to work on drawing the human figure.

Dominic Deegan is pretty much the worst written anything I've ever read. Comic, book, movie, audio play, video game, RPG, appliance instruction manual, etc. I've probably seen worse art somewhere but as a story I can't think of a bigger failure. This isn't as bad, yet, but that may just be because it's moving at such a glacial pace. That "cuddling" sequence, though. Man.

And I've already gone on record in this thread as saying I sincerely believe(d) DD is (was) the nadir of Human creative endeavor. It's hard to compare with the sheer totality of DD, but it is more boring so far. It really feels like we're going absolutely nowhere, like even if it were faster paced, there's nowhere to get to.

Generally speaking using photographs as *reference* is usually considered fine and dandy, but you wanna be clever and transform it a bit more than that. Basically it's not the crime, it's if you get caught.

The strip was always bad but everything involving Mongreltown has made it worse. They've eliminated all stakes, all conflict, the search for the meaning of the disappearance of Dominic Deegan and the End of Prophecy is now some weird images in a book they found at a porno shop. That's it. That's what's happening. That's ALL that is happening.
