alternate explanation: a lot of people who are dumb as poo poo end up in the intelligence space because the requirements for entry are less "be incredibly competent" like in the movies and are actually more like "be a boring square through college and join the correct frat." then once they are in intelligence, they think they're super smart and competent, like in the movies, and live entirely on their own farts. also the broadly defined "government intelligence" space is at least 100k jobs so if even 3% of people match the above, that's thousands of people who will believe anything. the FBI is almost entirely staffed by Breitbart readers who forward goofy poo poo to their grandkids. these are not super competent people all around

I don’t think the existence of Falun Gong is owed to the cia. I do think their unlimited access to western media and select western politicians is, as well as their funding structure that enables them to run a news empire that no one pays for, and a huge traveling anti communist stage show with an unlimited advertising budget. it’s very similar to how Rev Moon was a genuine crazy person with genuine control of a genuine cult, but that cult became highly convenient for the KIA and CIA and had its reach dramatically amplified through them.

I read some accounts of branch Davidians (not related to the assault, just day to day life) and they were terrifying, because 1) the believers come across as completely regular American idiots. I guess I had a cult member stereotype and was thinking only a certain kind of desperate person was vulnerable, but no 2) they didn’t even seem to like David Koresh. It did not take a mega charismatic figure to lead the cult, just a loser with gumption. in combination the impression I got was “I just want to live my life, but drat it, Jesus Christ reincarnated and he needs me. and I don’t even like the guy!” it’s like there is just a button in the brain that can be pushed.
