Good times.

That money is going into top secret tech and weapons development and purchasing - obviously they can't give receipts for it as a matter of national security and since military tech is about 17 years ahead of what's commercially available well it's drat expensive Whoa, that's a weird way to spell "Lockheed Martin's executive bonuses"

Grondoth posted:yeah the romans stole everyone's religion, it's one of the ways they were able to keep everyone happy Well, yes, they stole people's gods, this is true. They had a whole ritual about it! When they were besieging your city, they'd perform a ritual which basically said, "hey, god of that city. Those guys suck, we're much better followers, come be our good as well." Which is one of the things that made the Romans different from the Greeks! But the idea that the Romans stole the Greek pantheon and renamed it is absurd. It's more likely that they both come from a similar pantheon, and they each ran with it. Polytheistic religions tend to come up with gods that cover the same issues, after all. Zeus is a down-to earth kinda guy. He disguises himself as animals and fucks people's wives. Mars is an rear end in a top hat, Athena is pretty cool. She likes to trick people. The goddesses go show innocent princes their tits. Jupiter, on the other hand, doesn't do any of that stuff. He sends people signs in the movement of birds and occasionally zaps people with lightning. He doesn't gently caress around with people's wives. The Roman gods don't personally interact with people. There are a bunch of Roman gods that don't appear in the Greek pantheon (Janus, Vesta) while the Greeks swiped a few gods from other cultures as well (Aphrodite from Ishtar/Inanna and Dionysus from the Egyptians). Now, the Romans did take a few gods directly from the Greeks. Dionysus become Bacchus, and once they heard stories of Heracles, they started worshipping him as a demigod as well. And the mystery cults of the later Roman Empire came from all over the place; Mithras from the Persians (maybe), cults of Isis from Egypt, cults of Demeter from Greece again, but they also established their own cult (the Imperial cult). In conclusion, the history of religion is a land of contrasts, and we don't know for certain a lot of the details, but saying "Romans stole Greek gods and filed off the serial numbers" is a pretty old-timey understanding of the parallel evolution of Greek and Roman paganism.

Al! posted:i heard from someone who would definitely know that the romans were probably also lying about the extent to which they destroyed carthage, including the salting the earth bit, because archeological evidence has found that people remained and farmed in the area even after rome supposedly made it uninhabitable The area around Carthage was very fertile and was rebuilt pretty quickly. Was an important part of the Roman Empire.

It's funny that they're still maintaining the fiction that he was a financier. I guess 'disgraced blackmailer' raises too many questions that the article doesn't want to answer.

Speaking of subs & Sweden, didn't it come out a few years ago that a rash of suspected Soviet subs spying on Sweden in the 80s turned out to be part of an American psy-op trying to push Sweden into the NATO orbit?
