microkernels are simple and elegant solutions, which is why they are so tempting to nerds who want to believe in purity of design and implementation. they also don’t work in practice. a microkernel is one of those ideas, like libertarianism or bitcoins or Rust, that infects people’s brain and leads them to absurd devotion in the face of reality. they punt major problems for user-space to handle, where it’s a million times harder or impossible to do. and no matter how many times they’ve been tried, they never work well outside of specialized applications, and yet people keep trying over and over again.
