I thought Japan was pretty anti-homo and was pleasantly surprised to see it handled so well. Japan is "anti-homo" in the sense that their ruling party is conservative with limpdick opposition, but on an individual level LGBT issues poll with or trending towards majority support, and people have achieved gains for stuff like same-sex unions and gender expression in schools on local/individual levels. Earlier this year there was huge backlash to a politician complaining about "unproductive" people like gays and lesbians. This is expanding beyond just "anime" but there's a good amount of stuff handling those issues as well as authors who openly identify as gay/lesbian even given a lot of manga authors' preference for privacy.
