Oh man, this game owns. I played it for a while a few years ago but I got stuck on some enemies quite a bit further down that killed the poo poo out of me and I couldn't find any more minerals. It's such a cute game tho  I think the vendor dude makes things out of the ores and sells them back to you. it's a very strange micro-capitalism.
