Reminds me of a kid I knew in high school whose life goal was to do Boot Camp for all four major branches. His plan was to enlist in what he considered to be order of difficulty: Air Force, Navy, Army, then Marines.

I wonder if his dumb rear end held on to that dream.

I just found this on reddit:

Foreign Enlistment Act violation

Ok heres the situation.

I am currently in 📍 Donetsk, Russia

I came here with the intent to join Russian Forces.

Anyways whats the punishment for coming back to Canada?

Need some legal advice here.

redditor posted:

You can and should be prosecuted. A statement from Freeland, Deputy PM:

Asked at a news conference whether Canadians who pick up arms for Russia would be prosecuted, Freeland said: “We are very clear that this war is illegal. And Canada will take a very appropriately severe view of anyone who is fighting this war.”

As people in the comments point out, intent is an element of the violation, so he’ll be fine so long as he doesn’t publicly announce something like…

Looking at his other posts it sounds like he arrived weeks ago and either sensibly decided it was a bad idea or the russians told him to gently caress off. I assumed this was a fake post, but he posted 23 days ago about flying turkish airlines and didn't post for a while in the meantime, still a good chance it's fake but the poster put some work in if so

If it's not fake, my gut feeling is he probably isn't on the legal system's radar (but maybe he is now, since he posted about it) and if he never successfully enlisted he could probably get some leniency just saying he was misled by twitter spam or whatever. The idea of someone making his way all the way to Donetsk and then asking Reddit for advice is very funny though

edit: if it's real and he's actually worried about getting identified and arrested then he is making some dumb posts

edit edit: wtf

The book Starship Troopers had a pretty dumb system for its highest rank:
1. Join Army as enlisted, serve a few years
2. Go to OCS (only way to make officer)
3. Rise in ranks to become General
4. Enlist in Navy, serve a few years
5. Go to OCS
6. Rise in ranks to become Admiral
7. Congratulations! You are now qualified to become Sky Marshall!

(Also works Navy then Army)

It's for the better. Someone with such poor judgment has no business being put in charge of anything even remotely important.

edit: my unit had a S3 captain that was such a fuckup that while I was a first lieutenant S4 the field grades essentially had him working for me for the last week of a training exercise because they were tired of dealing with him. I had him run the wash rack.

That's why I think it must have been caused by bullying. Like years of his rear end in a top hat brother-in-law saying things like "If I was going to enlist I'd be a real soldier and join the marines like my grandfather. Hoorah." "Hey soldier-boy, write any good lists lately?" "Be careful out there, you might get a paper cut."

He had an indoor job with decent pay and job security. Lots of people walk away from the military for private sector jobs. But what could possibly have motivated him to throw that away for basically the same career path but worse?

The propaganda of the Marine Corps, I suppose. No offense to our Marine fellow service members but their PR is good. That said even as a loggie, if I know my Army officer progression right he must have been a platoon leader, company commander, batallion S4 etc. and thus been around plenty of his enlisted soldiers? Was he one of these guys that was like, man it would be so much better to be one of them? I know there are plenty of Air Force officer jobs where you don't really spend time around enlisted, aren't an OIC/flight commander, but I would guess the Army is different.

As an O-3 with some sort of security clearance (I assume) he could be punching out and getting some sweet contractor job like so many of us have.

Honestly, yeah. That hardest part of becoming an officer is getting the 4 year degree. He's already got that part.

He'd probably not do too bad in the OCS because he'll already know all the poo poo their checking for.
