I sort of found it. It was a book I read as a kid about a giant nerd with a spaceship full of alien monsters and a psychic cat. Turns out it's called Tuff Voyaging, and it's by George R. R. Martin, of all loving people. The main thrust of the book is about the need for population control, and I didn't even remember that part.

I still have a few of those issues floating around: poo poo, that might be what it was. I must have read some of the stories, not the entire book.
