Eliminator is back for its 16th Season. That's 15.5 more seasons than the AAF!

Your favorite clown-car of an admin team has continued to stare down the barrel of Ruby just for you— many thanks to Rura Penthe for doing all the actual hard work in seasons 1-13 so we can just poke at it successfully.

---

What is eliminator?
A free game running on the intarwebs that lets you obsess about NFL football in exciting ways! Running out of SAS/TFF since 2004, it contains survival mode and pick'em with reverse and spread variants, as well as a fake money betting mode called funbuck that allows spread, moneyline, over/under, and parlay betting like a real sports book except you don’t get any actual money at the end.

Important Links:

Log in or Register

Make some picks!

---

Games

-Eliminator: An inevitable march toward a sure thing that isn't
-Reverse Eliminator
-Spread Eliminator (pick against the spread)
-Reverse Spread Eliminator (because why not)

-Pickem: 16 chances to pick against the Browns, and 240 other games to ponder
-Reverse Pickem
-Spread Pickem (pick against the spread)
-Reverse Spread Pickem (also because why not)

-Funbucks: Gamble with fake stacks that are still easier to cash out than Bitcoin

Also there are groups! Maybe you don’t want to lose to randos from the internet, but you think you can show up people you actually know! Good news, you can do exactly that. Group owners can set their groups to be public/private, control the game types that are allowed, and email invitations to users.

There are leaderboards for every game type and every group, so there have never been more chances to show how bad you are at picking NFL games!

Season 15 recap:

Nobody won public season 15 eliminator, and only one person, cohomology, ended up with 16 wins. They were caught up in 2018's greatest bloodbath-- week 3 when the vikings forgot to come out of the locker room versus the bills.

riparian was the pickem winner with a 68% final correct pick percentage on 183 victories.

riparian also used that skill to net some fake dollars, with a final total of $68K (of which $61,710 came in a 7-way week 17 parlay.

Worst Bloodbaths Ever!
2004 Week 9
First year of eliminator and very few bets, but the Giants and Chiefs went down and when the smoke cleared only 25% of players were still standing.

2005 Week 1
The game that made Rura swear off Rams bets forever. 4 complete seasons since and not once has he bet on that cursed team.

2006 Week 7
Cards and Jags combined to break the hearts of well over 100 people. 29.76% remained.

2007 Week 10
Damned Saints! This was the year the Saints had suddenly become good. Unfortunately the ghost of Archie Manning put a hex on the team and they went down, taking 76 brave souls with them. (The hex was made more powerful by Archie not being dead.) 27.86% survived.

2010 Week 16
The latest mass elimination in the history of the game. 6 of the top 8 teams (ordered by # of bets) went down in flames and only 20.9% survived.

2013 Week 10
Jaguars beat Titans. Whoops. 15.49% made it through.

2015 Week 2
The god damned Saints again. Brees takes a massive L in his own stadium at the hands of Jameis Winston and the Buccaneers for Winston's first ever NFL win. Later that day, the Ravens give up a touchdown with 30 seconds left in the 4th to go down 33-37 against the Raiders. Yikes. Only 12.3% survived the worst bloodbath in Eliminator history.

2018 Week 3
In an exciting change of pace, it was the Vikings letting everyone down. Only 25.57% made it through.

Preseason is separate from the regular season-- it goes up when I get my poo poo together. Records don't carry into the regular season so bet, don't bet, live your best life! It's mainly to make sure all the weekly automated scripts are working (mailers, odds, schedule updates... etc) before the regular season.

no no, not necessarily!

Say in week 14, one goon is left standing. He has zero losses, while there's a dozen goons with 1 loss. Then, over the remaining weeks, that one goon loses 2 more games, while one of the others loses none. At the end of the season, one of those other goons has the fewest losses: but the first goon I mentioned should still be the winner. That's what "elimination" means.

If we just crown whoever had the fewest losses at the end of the season, it's not an elimination bracket.

I don't necessarily disagree, but not enough to code the ruby that would let me see who that was

An excellent question. As a cargo cult web app operator I'm going to say yes, as you managed to pick up some wins on meaningless games. And also the funbuck setup script only runs once a year.

Congratulations!

Vegas thinks both teams will win?

Pinnacle has both under 2 in decimal odds, so it's not a parse error, and I found this

quote:

Occasionally, both moneylines will be negative, but they won’t be identical (e.g. -115 and -105). If this is the case, the one farther from zero is the slight favorite. The greater the difference between the two teams’ odds, the greater the difference between the underdog and the favorite.

I'm sure some actual degenerate gambler can explain it better.

Pinnacle doesn't even have that game listed for some reason.

I can look at the funbuck line update email and see if that can be repurposed.

The real fix is probably moving off pinnacle who have been slow to post lines this season (sorry, elfurbe!)

I've manually put in a spread from william hill, caesars and westgate don't have lines yet either. Guess there's still a lot of uncertainty about it.

evil roadmap feature, just count no-picks as losses to end all the confusion about "what is a winner" The game is picking winners, if you did not pick a winner that week, you did not succeed.

At least let me make the pick before the spread shows up.

as of right now, westgate, william hill and MGM are not taking bets on that game either. It sucks for everyone, so it's still a level field.

https://www.vegasinsider.com/nfl/odds/las-vegas/

if there's no line set, you can't bet at a real casino, why should fake money be any different?

Tiny Tubesteak Tom posted:

I can't tell if you're serious about this being a roadmap feature because no less than two dozen well-intentioned people have said this in the past three or so seasons of Eliminator only for elfurbe to write some epic meltdown about how "you people just don't understand the game" and how it's such a hassle to have to run it or have people offer suggestions about how it's run.

"Counting a no-pick as a loss" would change nothing about the scoring except the display of the results. It does not change the game at all, just simplifies the results table.

Also good job to Pickem winners Jaggedstagger and GerryC84. Notable  shoutout to Burger Trench who was in the lead last week and didn't pick this week-- they would have needed only 6 correct picks to have won.

Yes.

The NFL has "helpfully" redesigned their site so that the scrapers no longer work to import schedules or results. We are looking at options for data feeds, but as a last resort I'll be manually entering games and results-- this means there won't be a fast turnaround on sundays for reusing funbucks until we get it sorted.
