No, Eden and its students' families make it extremely clear that Ostsnia is capitalist. Consider Becky, for instance.

Loid is generally smart and insightful, but early on, it has been established that the stress of being a dad has significantly weakened his mental capacity to think critically about his family. That is the basis for Loid not figuring out his entire family dynamic.

Nonetheless, some of the students are children of wealthy CEOs. That is a sign of capitalism in the economy. Though most modern are not purely capitalist or purely socialist per say.

Corporate entities date back to at least Rome, and continued to exist under feudalism and mercantilism, but I'm not sure I would call those societies capitalist.

That's fair (though there are no societal signs that Ostania has feudalism and mercantilism economy would not impose restrictions on its exports). What I am suggesting is that Ostania may ultimately be a mixed economy (like many modern societies), but having wealthy CEOs, politicians, high-ranking military officers, etc. are present in capitalism, socialist market, etc. (I just have a feeling that the signs point more towards a mixed economy that leans more towards capitalism.)

While the rich and powerful obviously exist in socialist countries, the uh, aesthetic of the elite in Ostania doesn't really fit mid century eastern bloc socialism.
Also it seems to have some form of democracy capable of peaceful regime change despite having secret police and poo poo.

Ostania is weird and while it's obviously drawing from East Germany in some ways it's certainly not a parallel. Among other things there doesn't seem to be a superpower backing either Ostania or Westalis.

I kind of view Ostania as being similar to late Tsarist Russia, actually- their secret police might look like the Stasi, but maybe they're actually like the Cheka?

Also, I love the confirmation that Yor is turbo-horny for Loid to the point where even sleeping in the same room with separate beds is enough to get her to cool off in a blizzard- and that Master Spy™ Loid still can't pick up on it :allears: I do wonder how the punny names were presented in Japanese, though.

Yeah, it's weird. I assume the author didn't want every bigshot and potential villain to just be [party leadership director] and [reactionary general].

Ostania seems to have not just corporations, but CEOs, mergers, acquisitions, boardroom politics (as seen in the chapter in which Anya's classmate is mad that his father's company is being aggressively bought out). I don't rememver seeing any reference to a stocks trading, but I might have missed it.

he thought quoting borges would make him popular
It's fruitless to try to map the politics 1:1 to West/East Germany, it's just a trapping/aesthetic and not really the point of the series. If you really wanted to highlight any substantive reason for the conflict you'd need to have at least some of the series set in Westalis, or at least describe the conflict in more specific terms than having the countries named after compass points. Honestly it just would make things even funnier if both countries were more or less culturally, economically, and politically identical and the entire basis of their split/rivalry/foreverwar is some completely trivial tiff.

Internal propaganda portrays it as communist with Westalia as capitalist but Ostania has all of the trappings of not just market capitalism but the hyper income inequality and classism of modern late stage capitalism. Just as New York is the fifth character of Sex and the City, so too is Berlint yet another example of a main character with a distinction between public and private persona. For another example of a romance allegorically set in dialogue with the conflict between East and West, public and private, try Jenny Erpenbeck’s recently translated novel “Kairos”
