He's been in the media a bit with the movie and netflix show. I've always been aware of him as a baby boomer boogeyman but I never realised how lame he actually was. All his cult did was kill some rich Hollywoods while high as gently caress to start a race war. These days you can get gunned down in the street by stone cold sober incel nazis who are fighting(in their heads) a literal race war. Manson's family didn't even explode any building or have assault rifles or try to start a caliphate/white homleand. Am I just desensitized these days or were people 50 years ago just pussies?

I watched some bad documentary about him with a friend when we were sitting around hung over some afternoon and it was like “he lured the men in with women and drugs”. That doesn’t sound so bad. The actual answer is his goal was to start a race war

the thing to remember is that people at the time didn't have the benefit of historical hindsight like we do today. it was a moral panic but it was informed by the surge in overt radicalism in the 60s, while poo poo like the world almost ending in '62 or america's slaughter of people abroad was completely normalized

Young disaffected kids smoking weed, having sex (and going crazy because of the weed and sex) running around gruesomely murdering people scared the olds. The youths had too much freedom and all the pot, rock and jazz, and sex was making them crazy. Normally this wasn't a problem because those things were heretofore affordable only for the urban bourgeois, but the abundance of post-war America made these things affordable even for poor losers. I just get really reminded of how the right these days likes to disavow its own mass murderers by labeling them as "leftist" because they don't fit in 100% with right orthodoxy. Charles Manson and his followers believed in basically the same poo poo the right did (and still does) at the time; they believed black people were inferior savages who would riot and try to kill them all and if they were successful society would collapse because they were certain black people cannot govern themselves. Most of the women in the Manson family came from white middle class families. However, since Manson was also into hippy free love poo poo and smoking dope, most people just ran with that and ignored the race war poo poo he wanted.

It wasn’t just what the family did, it was also that they were mostly pretty young women. While so many recent mass shootings have been by disgruntled men, the Manson murders shook gender expectations hard, and in a bad way.

The family is still an active political issue in California btw, several members have been recommended for parole multiple times (Manson himself never was). Each time the Tate family petitioned the governor to refuse and govs of both parties have, typically with some statement that effectively denies the possibility of rehabilitation in the case.

The history is rife with interesting hooks. For one thing Manson was at Boys Town (think Franklin coverup) which leads to church involvement, government intelligence, and the usual stew of things that make people interested. Whatever actually happened, when combined with the known outcomes it makes for a lot of theorizing.

Dahmer is just a loving terrifying story, the classic nice social suburban neighbor that everyone liked. Eventually got caught because he went after a boy scout instead of his usual drifter; some think he was ready to get caught because his crawl space was full and it was getting tough to cover up the smell. Manson, yeah, that just seems like a cultural thing. We hear so much about it because it's one of those Boomer "loss of innocence" points that they obsess about, if it happened these days it'd be a story for a week tops until the next mass shooting.
