Manson ingratiated himself into a "friendship" with Dennis Wilson, and the Family stayed at his mansion for a while in 1968 before Wilson got sick of their bullshit and moved out, making his landlord deal with kicking everyone out. By all accounts Wilson felt a tremendous amount of guilt from having associated with them and it may be one of the things that contributed to his self-destructive behavior later in life

The Manson thing is weird on lots of levels when you look into it. The Manson File by Nikolas Schreck is by far the best read on the subject (if you can get ahold of it - it's expensive). The zeitgeist understanding of the Manson thing was basically formed by sensationalist reporting at the time, which was very convenient for lots of parties. the movement that started in San Francisco being portrayed as Satanic, morally abhorrent, degenerate gave the right some political momentum they'd been lacking for ages. Also there are rumours that. Polanski was doing some REAL messed up things to Sharon Tate and ugh go look it up if you want a bad mental health day e: conversely, for a load of hippies the media frenzy disillusioned a lot of them.
