I'd rank this as third best out of McBride's tv series at this point. Although I'm comparing three episodes of this to the entirety of Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals so it's not really a fair comparison. I like it a lot so far but I think the cast is a bit on the large side. I know McBride wanted to do more of an ensemble piece this time, but it seems like some of the characters suffer a bit for it. I wouldn't have minded if all of the episodes were an hour long.

He has said that he thought of this as his version of THE THORNBIRDS. If HBO let him he would go multiple ways, following these other characters. I guess even if someone doesn't feature as much now, they could down the road.

Also, I forgot Baby Billy is meant to be about 70 years old.

to be fair unless a show has some kind of mystery box element or is some sort of cult genre fare it usually doesn’t have a super active following on here

Yeah an active thread isn't really an indicator of anything. These shows are pretty straight forward and good and there not a lot in them to argue about. Look at some of the more active threads like TWD and everyone in it hates the show.

Yeah I think Sons of Anarchy had one of the most active threads in TV IV history.

"Tell that to Zod's snapped neck!"

three notes:

1). Adam Devine and his side-plots might be the highlight of the show, and that's coming from someone who isn't a particularly big fan of his usual style of comedy.

2). I cannot wait for the moment when McBride gets his from his wife.

3). Holy poo poo Marla Maples?

I'm loving Edi Patterson more and more, even though she was barely in this one. But honestly, my favorite part of this episode was the preview for the next episode.

I do appreciate that every episode so far has featured penis and/or balls. Who knows who will be next.

Keefe is the best part of the show. That little sweep pantomime he did when they were talking to Dot's parents was just loving hilarious. Plus the whole bit with the condom...hope he'll know what to do next time he encounters a semen load.

Yes, we have feathers--but the muscles of men.
Danny McBride may be the best and worst actor in the world. He’s the best because I completely believe him as these awful people, but the worst because he very often makes me not want that person in my life. Vice Principals and the tail end of Eastbound & Down have been really hard to watch for that reason. I can only take them in bite-sized segments.

This has been much easier to watch. I think it’s the addition of Adam Devine, who is such a fantastic clown, and probably seeing Tim Baltz putter in the background every so often (he is a favorite of mine from regular appearances on Comedy Bang Bang and from Bajillion Dollar Properties).

So you can only handle Eastbound and Down and Vice Principals in bite sized 5-10 minutes chunks?

This episode felt the least relevant to the overarching story but it was also the funniest. Felt like maximum Jody hill with the way it relished in the absurdity of gawking at pudgy goths and youth group kids bouncing around on trampolines.

Keefe is also the best. I could watch a whole show about him.

Yeah, I can't remember what other roles I've seen him in, but I didn't have a strong impression before. But he's fantastic here. I love how he plays the desperation that comes through whenever he's trying to use slang for his youth pastor shtick.

Ever since I saw him in Workaholics I thought he'd be great at playing a real religious christian character. He has that personality and look that reminds me of people I knew when I was younger and in church.

Love McBride/Hill. No matter how much I get used to their weird dialogue, their uniquely goofy lines always kill me.

i've never been a fan of Adam Devine and his smug facial expressions, but him as a tryhard youth pastor from megachurch royalty is genius casting. he's killing it. (though naming Dot's family the "Nancys", having them operate a chain of chicken joints, and being big-time church donors was a little too on the nose for me if you've been following the Chicken Sandwich Wars.)

also, just like Eastbound and VPs the conscious decision to set and shoot this in the Carolinas, where Hill/DGG/McBride all grew up, just makes the whole world of the show so lived-in and sets it apart from most other things on TV. (though from knowing a guy who works up there, I'd have thought this would be set in Greenville instead of Charleston--proximity to the money of Charlotte, John Goodman's character being experienced with snakes, it all would make more sense in the Upstate.)

next week's a flashback, and already I love Walton Goggins going full Miami Vice.

Devine was fine in WORKAHOLICS but I've found him insufferable in everything else (particularly his HOT ONES appearence). To be fair to him though he's really good in his, probably because he's given more to do.

I also like that you get these little moments that show they're pretty good at what they do, if it wasn't for the fact they became so greed infested.

The thing that McBride/Hill shows do better than any other show is using establishing or reaction shots of random extras and making them into a punchline by themselves. The two youth group kids playing hand clapping games in the middle of all the sky zone stuff was so funny to me and I can't even articulate exactly why. It's just so loving ordinary.

It kind of reminds me of Coen Bros movies where every single minor and throwaway character is fully realized in the most minimum of dialogue or appearance.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a boring movie
What can I say that already hasn't been said. The Jody Hill gang continue to knock it out of the park with every series they do for HBO.

I know someone earlier said they weren't huge fans of the ensemble cast nature of the show, but I kinda like it. E&B and VP were razor sharp and tightly focused on one or two characters. But I like the idea of exploring this weird hosed up world of the Gemstones.

The youth ministry poo poo was on loving point. I grew up in an evangelical christian environment and even though it wasn't to the extreme as seen in the show, a lot of it hit home.

Someone made a comparison to the Coen brothers and it really does fit.
