I haven't played this since... probably the second month after release? Life got in the way. I remember having a blast in the beta. Is the game still good/worth playing?

It's a great game and the past couple months would have been perfect to play since all adventure packs are free. Not sure that's going to be extended into June unfortunately. Keep in mind it's a very old game at this point so that comes with good and bad points. Nearly everything has been itemized so if you want the best leveling method while free to play, the most fun quests, etc etc you can find that. On the flip side, the playerbase is pretty small. It's best played if you can get your own little crew together. Even 1 other person makes a world of difference.

There are probably people with better opinions here so maybe someone else will chime in.

drat. Nice. Everybody should be logging on and claiming those coupons and using any leftover TP they have for dirt cheap expansions lol.

Makes me wonder what the long term goal is though giving all that away for free... wonder if its a shift in the future to how they price things (e.g. go real cosmetic only) or a death knell or just... being nice...?

Also yes, duoing/grouping with people you know drastically increases the fun of this game. That's for drat sure.

My guess is they saw how many new players this brought so they're giving away all the old content to reinvigorate the playerbase. Especially with the feywild xpac coming down the pipe soon(ish?) If it was a death knell, they would likely have given sharn and ravenloft for free, too. I've sadly experienced a lot of MMOs dying and this feels more like restructuring their income stream rather than staving off the inevitable end.

DDO got real shafted by being one of the first western F2P MMOs too. Paying for all the content is perfectly reasonable... until everybody just focuses on monetizing cosmetics/consumables and nobody wants to have to run into constant content paywalls.

But yeah I legit forgot about Sharn expansion and thought it was giving away all but the newest expansion originally :p Hopefully they can use this as a way to get people into the game again, I have big big gripes with the post-MOTU itemization strategy but I really do love the game.

Honestly I'm shocked DDO survived. Most of the other games that adopted this style of F2P died pretty fast, iirc.

btw what's the best way to get a weapon upgrade around level 15 (mauls if it matters)? There's apparently a crafting thing in Sharn but I'm too stupid to figure out what's going on.

RosaParksOfDip
May 11, 2009
The Sharn crafting appears to be just unlocking the last slot on the named items that drop there.

Vis a vis mauls, there's mournlode from the cannith challenges at 12 and 16, Fury of the Flame and ratkiller from cove event at 12 and 16.

whoa

One of my biggest complaints about DDO at this point is that playing the game is a ton of fun, IF you are subbed and have access to the boat loads of content the game has. Otherwise it doesn't take long before you start running into the paywall.

After this is over, they should really take a look at what content they're keeping behind the paywall and just give away a lot of the lower level stuff for free.

which is weird, because it's the best style. i'll buy $5-20 dlcs if the content in the packs is fun. constantly throwing loving skins into my face is incredibly lovely tho. i get the reasons why it's successful (it gets more cash from "whales" who buy poo poo on a whim), but i dislike it for the exact same reasons.

They're giving away almost everything that currently exists away for free. All the currently existing adventure packs and the first two xpacs for basically free(99 DDO points each).

I remember playing this many, many years ago with goons and really getting into it. How active is the goon presence now? Is there an active clan or guild or something?

The goon guild still exists and you’re probably still in it. Not much activity but you can still pug things from time to time.

"Get the quests from Menace of the Underdark or The Shadowfell Conspiracy for 99 DDO Points each, now through August 31st! Find them in the DDO Store in-game." Discount packs are out.

edit: They don't check if you have ownership of the content, probably to get around everything being free right now, so FYI. Don't accidentally buy it on your account that owns it or anything. Also it's purely the quests, adventure areas and raids. None of the other content, just in case that wasn't obvious.

Question: In LOTRO the general advice is to buy at least a month of VIP to unlock some benefits on any character created while VIP, is that the same case with DDO? Is there content that you can unlock while VIP that continues, such as storage, classes or races?

DemonMage
Oct 14, 2004

What happens in the course of duty is up to you...
If you don't own the class or race then you won't be able to access it when your VIP expires without buying that class/race. I can't think of anything that you'd gain by creating during VIP that would persist once you lose VIP, other than drops for un-owned content in a general sense.

StashAugustine

You definitely want to buy something if you're sticking with it for a premium account, but it doesn't have to be VIP.

Speaking of now that I've got basically all the adventure packs, what else is there to actually buy? Classes and races as I want them; and I've got a bit of shared account space. Is there anything else I should be picking up?

Fried Sushi
Jul 5, 2004

I'll probably grab the 99 point quest packs at any rate, was just wondering if it was worth going VIP for a month like in LOTRO, doesn't sound like it though so will just buy classes piecemeal if I stick with it. Thanks for the answers.

RosaParksOfDip
May 11, 2009
You could go VIP, use the tp that gives you to buy the packs and try out some classes to see if you'll like them before pulling the trigger on buying it? But yeah there's no major reason to do VIP here, even less reason right now since all quests are free. I guess you'll get access to opening quests on Elite without having to first do them on Normal and Hard? That's a pretty decent perk.

A couple of the biggest ingredient bags you can get. This game will give you a ton of crafting tokens for nearly every adventure pack and it’s easier to just shove them all in than actually managing your inventory.

Any suggestions on a good duo for two free players? Do we have to have a healer and a trap person?

While it's nice to have a dedicated healer and trap monkey in my opinion, with wands and hirelings you're not going to be hampered like you used to be if you didn't have them.

RosaParksOfDip
May 11, 2009
I'd definitely prioritize having a trapmonkey over a healer. Everyone can usually handle self-healing with potions/wands as well grabbing a healer hireling if you want. I've never played with a rogue hireling so I don't know how they notify you of danger but it's easier for one of your duo to tell the other to stop when they sense traps.

A barbarian sounds really fun, but I was worried about whether it'd be tanky enough, or lack emergency healing

I've been leveling a barbarian on my second life and they're pretty tanky, like I was pretty tough in reaper up to the mid teens. They get a panic button 150 temp HP for -1 CON until they rest or die which is good for emergiencies and around level 12 or so they get a decent amount of health on hit and kill. Plus cleric hires are pretty decent unless they get themselves killed.

RosaParksOfDip
May 11, 2009
As long as you stay aware of your surroundings, i.e. don't let yourself get surrounded and keep an eye out for casters locking you down, you should be able to run away from fights when you're getting dunked and chug the biggest pots you have in an emergency. Usually if you're running content at level, you're unlikely to get one-shot/burst down faster than you can react.

I logged back in to my...maybe 11? year old character, a level 15 ranger/rogue/monk (?) and had a +20 reincarnation thingie, so now he's a sorcerer because that seemed cool. I don't know what I'm doing but my stats are insane by tabletop D&D standards, I have a 47 AC unbuffed and an inventory tab almost entirely full of rapiers so let's do this

RosaParksOfDip
May 11, 2009
Sorc is definitely fun. As I mentioned, I've been running a fire sorc (level 21 now) in a group of 3 and it's been a blast(heh). Also slowly convincing some other buddies to play, so I might make a bard or a barb for that group of potentially 5. I could split the difference and make a melee bard but after playing a caster and prior to that usually playing ranged or specialist characters, I kinda want to do just a basic pure melee type dude.

Barbarians get really strong self healing and they recently made 2h builds way better.

Like, you start off pretty tough, and then at 12 become an unkillable monster.

Can you elaborate on this? I keep looking over the paladin changes and while they’re good, I don’t see how they’re as crazy as people make them out to be.

IMO, the THF changes have been a bigger deal than the KOTC changes.
