But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.

You probably ought to have been afraid. You were in an alien environment, surrounded by hostile creatures, and your body was screaming at you that at any second you were going to smash into something enormous and flat and unyielding. Instead, you were grinning. You’d just saved two societies from disaster, slain an ancient beast - and then left before you could screw things up! And now you were in a staggeringly beautiful skyscape, floating under the power of an arcane charm you’d made yourself, and these creatures?

You could handle them! Your hands lit with flames so bright that they shied away, but that was just the appetizer to the great feast of violence that was to come. Next, you needed to be able to face these things on your own terms. In a now familiar feeling, you plucked off a portion of the great energy pressing against your heart (though not the strangely alien heat of Vein’s remnant) and forced it into your Charm. A scintillating emerald and sapphire energy traced every line of the thing, expanding and contorting it into a new shape.

Immediately, you halted in the air, your relative deceleration sending the creatures hurtling downwards to your eyes until they adjusted to your new speed. The Charm pulsed like a heartbeat, and you knew instinctively you could tap it thrice instead of once to get a boost of speed. With a flicker of your will, Vups manifested from her hiding place tucked beneath your belt and rose above you to peer down at your attackers. You experienced a strange doubling of vision as your saw through her eyes as well as your own, but soon enough you’d locked it down.

quote:

”Alright guys, just like we practiced. Let’s go all out!”
“We have definitely never practiced thiiiiiis!” Obei clung to your collar, one hand on his pike, but he laughed uproariously as you charged the first of the flying things, bursting it apart with a spike of heat. You drove towards another, and he chanced a blow at one that advanced on your position. The point of the Dogblin spear took it in one of its many eyes, and he whooped in surprised exhultation.

The melee did not take long. You leapt from one to the other, lashing them with burning tongues of fire. They fell at your assault, confused and outmatched. They were nothing but beasts, and they were ill-equipped to deal with something like you. Whatever you were becoming. You’d taken a few scrapes and lacerations from rough feathers (scales?) but otherwise you just hung there, breathing hard, as the wounded creatures fled or else fell to the infinite depths below. You were feeling pretty good about yourself, and Obei even said something complimentary about your fighting, then you had some light hearted banter. It all fell away when something enormous slammed out of a cloudbank far below you and devoured the falling bodies in a single titanic gulp before burying itself in another cumulus.

“Holy poo poo! Boss, what’s the plan? Do we… do we fight this thing? Do you have some magic whammo that can take that out?” You did not. You took a breath and concentrated, feeling your Charm refilling its driving force from the ambient energy of the place. You could still feel yourself falling (if much slower than before the upgrade), but in a pinch you could jet yourself up a ways from the beast. You also supposed Vups could move you around - she wasn’t terribly strong, but you weren’t heavy here. Well, you guessed it wasn’t so much that you were lighter, you were just falling, which made it seem like you were floating, but maybe in that case she could…

“Boss! BOSS! Look alive!” Your eyes snapped down, then towards Obei - but he was looking up.

Oh. Oh dear.

-O-O-
Oh well, she was dead! Time to go back to being dorma- no, wait, she was okay. Just… ew! Gross! The things these mortal creatures had to put up with just to keep hanging on to this little scrap of being. Dumb. Dumb, flapping things, all soft and wet. But but but SO full of Lozenergy. Well. A few painful and uncomfortable seconds later, you found yourself whole and unsplattered in a warm, humid room. And by room, you meant organ of some kind. Your stomach lurched from the smell and from the rapid elevation changes, but despite a few bruises you were unhurt. A familiar and unwelcome grin spread across a pulsating maroon something.

”Well, well. Making friends with the natives already! Is this how you saw this adventure going, kid? Because to *me*, it seems like getting swallowed is a sub-optimal choice!” You turned away from him irritably, but he just manifested on another surface. You were surprised how bright it was in here. A network of something like veins spread across the various organs and tissues and whatnot glowed a faint fuschia, making it just bright enough to see. But everywhere you looked, you sort of wish you couldn’t. ”So what’s next, kiddo? You should probably get out of this digestive gunk, but this big guy has all sorts of nooks and crannies you can poke your way through. You could probably also just, like, burn it to death. Maybe drop a few more Charges into your little fire magics? Couldn’t hurt. Do they know about carbon monoxide poisoning where you come from? No? Nevermind, it’s fine. You’ll be fine!”
  • Gross. Now What? You weren’t in any IMMEDIATE danger, but neither were you terribly pleased by your situation. Ŭpgrád seems to have had his fun, but he was sticking around, so if you felt like asking him anything he’d probably be amenable.

This might be a good time as any to ask about how many others were before us: we most certainly met one in the remains of the Cold Man. Does Upgrad remember the Cold Man, in life that is, at all?

We may want to find Up, too. You know, so we can get out without tearing in the beast or going out the Other Way. Maybe even see if we can pull a Dragonheart and talk with our captor, if it's sentient.

You were still a messed up in the head kid: right? wrong? These words didn't mean anything to you. You should have accepted that this was your fate in the cycle of life...to become a meat morsel for a skywhale. Instead, you liked to imagine you were possessed by the spirit of a demon slayer, roaming the countryside, eaten by a land whale. Except it wasn't the countryside, it was the sky, and skywhales didn't exist (unlike landwhales, that everyone knew the danger of), except for this one that you'd apparently gotten yourself eaten by. Yeah, sure. Why shouldn't this 'abomination that shouldn't exist" have charges that more rightfully belong to you? Why shouldn't you put those digestive juices to work on things outside the digestive tract?

But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.

Your eyes narrowed at the intrusive spirit, but it was also nice to see him. Her. It? You had a few questions, anyhow. You waved away their nonsense about starting a fire - it was way too wet in here for that anyhow, gross - and asked some stuff that had been percolating in your mind for a while.

quote:

"Ick... ugh. Well. So, uhm... Vein drained the 'blins to survive. He couldn't just take it from the land or whatever... so what powers you, Upgrad?"

Ŭpgrád’s eyes, such as they were, grew slitted and inscrutable. ”Why, the Pit itself, of course. That’s its nature. And, of course, interacting with interesting mortals such as yourself!” You rolled your eyes and made to fire off a rejoinder, but they continued. ”I… skim a little off the surface. Sure, yeah, let’s go with that. I skim a bit of the good stuff off the surface of the processes begun here by the careless antics of your predecessors. You think Vein was the worst of it? Vein was a blip on the radar, kid. There are whole Rooms that just churn with wasted, forgotten power left by shortsighted would-be heroes. But you’re better than those guys. You at least some sort of self-reflection, see? You consider your actions carefully, never wasting power when you should conserve it…” You remembered the Cold Man’s cold blue eyes as he ground himself into nothing for you, raised from the dead and destroyed on a whim. Your whim.

quote:

”Do you remember the Cold Man - in life, that is - at all?”
The eyes grew dim for a moment, rolling back until they vanished entirely, then reopened next to you. ”Alain Courget, from your land. A scout from Talendra’s army, from the war, lost to the Pit in his twentieth year. He found a place among the people of the cold Room you just vacated before falling from a cliff on a journey to the peak. He broke his spine in three places and froze to death, calling for his mother. He was warned, as you were warned, that he musn’t stay forever. The treasures he’d found could have turned the course of the war, but he got greedy.” His eyes scrutinized your face, but you were lost in thought. Talendra’s army? The Gelvertin war was nearly seven decades past! How… how long had this been going on? You tried to scrub the details of the Cold Ma - of Alain’s cautionary tale from your mind. Ŭpgrád was just trying to distract you.

quote:

"What are the rules for leaving? If I wanted to leave right now would you let me?"
”You may leave whenever you wish. I offered you a chance at escape not that long ago. Are you having second thoughts? Do you think that you, as you are, are enough to stop the Jeng? Go, then, with my blessings, little girl, and we shall see whether you or your ‘Cold Man’ is the fool.”

You shook your head like a confused dog, pulling away from that damned insidious voice. It could follow you as it willed, you knew all too well, but it stayed back for now. You would grow stronger with each breath. That was why you were here, and you’d resolved yourself to focusing your time on thatl. You estimated you had two days remaining before people would start getting worried about you. You’d long passed the threshold where they’d be merely annoyed with you. Call it maybe another week before they started sending out search parties. You’d been… rather a hardcore loner back then, and it wasn’t terribly strange for you to vanish for days or weeks at a time.
  • Resolve To Leave Soon Two days, then you’d head back. It wasn’t fair to leave the others behind, and you could, technically, come back once the furor died down…
  • Resolve To Push It A Little A week, then, and you’d go back. They’d punish you, but your sister was your only real guardian, and she’d be happy just to see you. For a while. And then you’d get hit with The Guilt.
  • Longer Than That Well, hold on. Ŭpgrád knew when the Jeng were returning, right? He could just bring you back when that happened, maximizing your chances! Surely you’d be forgiven once you were the hero of the village!
You pulled out your Terrible Mittens and brought Vein’s charge to your lips. Vein had been a parasite, sucking the power from generations a bit at a time. Well, at this relative size you basically were a parasite - maybe you could learn a little from that monster. You exhaled, infusing the patchwork things with a hot, acrid smoke.

You put them on and they felt warm to the touch. Warm, and not entirely substantial. If you pressed hard, you could feel flesh through their surface, but otherwise they felt like silk. The surface shifted like oil on water, and changed slightly in accordance to your desires. They drew in tight, or rose to your elbow, or extended your fingers crazily. The last felt uncanny, the sensations from the fingertips somehow passing to your flesh. You withdrew them and shook your hands off squeamishly. The gloves faded into crimson mist, then reformed at your call. Right, enough practice. You willed the tips into claws, and plunged both hands into a nearby lump of muscle.

The muscle spasmed, and you felt a deep groan rattle your very bones. Well, too bad - it shouldn’t have eaten you. At the same time, you felt an unfamiliar tingle tracing through your veins, along with a cascade of strange sensations. Air against your scales, pressure in your buoyancy bladders, a gabble of voices all speaking as one. And then it passed, leaving you invigorated, your hair standing on end. That was a HELL of a rush. You felt… something burning inside you. It was dissipating fast, but while it was going you felt your energy building like a boiling pot.

The groan happened again, and this time you almost lost your footing as the floor suddenly became the wall. Then your Charm flickered slightly and you felt just fine. Apart from your ride’s obvious anger, of course. What could it do now, though? It had already eaten y-

Something moved in the mass of tissues. You thought it was some involuntary flex of muscle or sinew, but when you looked at it fled. Instantly you were on high alert. Ŭpgrád was nowhere to be found, now, unsurprisingly, which meant things were about to get complicated. You sent Vups ranging out, but she relayed back frustration through your bond. ”I can’t pass through these walls, mistress. The energy coursing through the tissues render them impenetrable. I will do what I can.” True to her word, she followed the shape. Enormous, though dwarfed by the cavernous stomach(?) you were in. Twelve feet tall or more, and fast. And even as Vups watched, it sank into the floor and was gone. Where did it-

“OooOOOeeEEEE OOOOOaaauntttt YEeeeeW TooOOO SSttttAAAAwwwPPP YEEEeeeWMUuNNNNNN-” You Charmed yourself backwards, clearing a dozen feet with a burst of force while lashing out in surprise. The figure groaned and moved towards you. Its feet dragged through the flesh like a man ankle deep in wet sand, though it left no traces behind.
  • YEARGH!? What a horrorshow! Your mind was temporarily blank with disgust and animal fear!

-O-O-
