Let’s get this out of the way: The ongoing issues with Chucklefish should be left out of this thread. It divides the attention away from an excellent upcoming game. What the gently caress is a Rho? Game Director Rhopunzel Watson: She has a game design and pixel artist background plus 10 years of indie experience. She’s worked on Starbound, Gnomoria and RimWorld and is p. rad. What the gently caress is a Rho making? Outworlder is the maiden project of Igloosoft Games. It will be released on Windows, Mac and Linux. Main features: • Fluid, gun focused combat • Emphasis on colonising and community building • Complex NPC based crafting • Comprehensively designed ecosystems • Sophisticated and realistic terrain generation • Craftable doors to z-planes • Designed to be easily accessible for modders Outworlder is an open-world sandbox adventure that will follow the player on their journey from a lone survivor of a shipwreck to being the leader and protector of a burgeoning spacefaring colony. You will begin on a cold, hazardous world, and will quickly have to navigate the various elements and dangers of a hostile alien environment while learning to farm crops, tame wildlife and keep livestock as you find the survivors needed in order to eventually launch your adventure into space. There will be minimal narrative – instead, there will be a sprawling setting to explore and piece together at your leisure. OP Note: I personally find that sick nasty ranged combat and the colony management stuff to be stand out. Aside from the very, very good art direction. Hype for this! About those z-plane doors. Do they need to have a background layer to set into, and does the background layer determine the size of the "room?" I'm still having a hard time picturing this mechanic.

Galaxander posted:Hype for this! Not sure about the mechanics of it specifically, I'm just the corporate stooge. From my understanding is that the z-plane size will be equivalent to or smaller than the room you're placing that door on. Once again I don't know the "how" in technical terms, but I'll ask the devs.

You should edit your post in the old thread with a link to this one. A lot of us could miss it without looking! This looks phenomenal, and I'm pretty stoked to follow development until (and after, if my following of Factorio is any indication) I can get my mitts on it.

Thunk emoji is a big plus. I keep forgetting how much nicer this looks when you fullscreen the shots. It's weird, there's a big disconnect between how it looks in low res and the detail that pops out when you look close. Normally pixel games become kind of unreadable when downsized but this one just gets weirdly simplified. I continue to enjoy the terrain style, it's got a really authentic retro look to it. Reminds me of playing my amiga as a kid.

DarthRoblox posted:When's it come out OP? It'll be on our site on a few days but I can leak it early here: We're ahead of schedule to release a Creative Multiplayer before the end of the year. We plan to launch that for free and immediately move on to developing survival mode, which will be accessible via the preorder which will be either concurrent with the launch of Creative or shortly after. Survival will be split up in to several modules/milestones. The first will be a single playable planet with complete progression, the second will be introducing new planets and travel to the mix, the third will be tying it all together and adding polish. I expect the first milestone will take 4-6 months, but I have most of next year budgeted for it to be safe. After a certain game I'm deeply uncomfortable with accepting money without immediately having something to play, and I don't want to have a situation where people are paying for something and then waiting for a year to get anything. I figure modular development is the best compromise instead of trying to build the entire full scale game at once. That way the choice is yours, if you want to support us and wait, you can do that. But if you want to support us and see whether your $15 or whatever is going far, you'll be able to play the prealpha early. TLDR: End of year if you want something immediately playable, but we have a much longer development schedule planned. Rhopunzel fucked around with this message at 07:56 on Aug 31, 2019 |

We haven't fully fleshed it out, but there'll most likely be some way to determine the size of the room before you place the z-door, and it'll directly reflect the size of the background it sits on if there isn't one already there. There won't be any traveling, but there'll be different biomes and you'll be able to generate whatever seed you want. The Creative alpha is to mostly demonstrate off our fancy terrain gen, chunk system and block/object library, and whatever other features we throw in before moving onto survival proper, and hopefully serve as a good advertisement for it.

Galaxander posted:Will planets be good and large? Can they have a ocean without being specifically an "ocean planet?" Hey there. Q: Will planets be good and large? A: Large, yes. If you're asking about the gameplay area, then the current max size of each zone you're in is decently large. It's about as high as Terraria's maximum and can be considerably wider. I'm not sure if I can say the tech specs but let's just say considerably. As for good, I'm hopeful that you'll like what we're doing with them. Q: Can they have a (specific biome) without specifically being a (biome planet)? A: Yes. The current priority is developing Zone-Wide Themes in a way that's cohesive while also adding a decent biome diversity. We want you to find the idea of exploring the place you're in interesting, without getting the feeling that you've seen it all. Also, "in a way that's cohesive" is not a way of saying things will be limited as in my research there's some crazy stuff going on when it comes down to sudden wild changes in our very planet (especially when it comes down to snow > sand transitions), rather that there's a special attention going to how they're placed. I feel like it's important that the joy of discovery is there whether you're going right or down. Elentor fucked around with this message at 18:19 on Aug 31, 2019 |

How is gear and equipment going to be handled? Starbound's armor and EPP system was very bland as all it did was raise your stats and stop environment hazards so you can go to the next tier of planets. Are all the weapons gonna be handcrafted or randomly generated? Can we breed guns and bullets?

Are all the weapons gonna be handcrafted or randomly generated? Can we breed guns and bullets? Currently, armors are planned to just be an extra layer of protection rather than just inflating your stats. So with armor you'll probably be able to take a few more bullets/hits and survive, but its effectiveness will be done and you'll need to repair it. Protection against environment hazards are planned but it'll be shades rather than a simple on/off invulnerability. Like for instance wearing a heat resistant suit will mean you can last an hour on an extremely hot volcano planet as opposed to 2 minutes without. Guns will be individually crafted. I don't like randomly generated guns. As a gun nerd I plan on going full tilt, going from WW2 vintage guns to future plasma rifles. They will have reloading, complete with a bolt status indicator on the UI so you can watch it fly while you're on full auto, or time your shots with the slower bolt action rifles. Bullets won't be simple giant flaming projectiles. They'll have ballistics and won't be visible for the most part aside from tracers. "Energy" isn't a player tied stat. Anything that uses energy will draw from its own pool tied to the item. There is no gun breeding, but there'll be different ammo types like subsonic, armor piercing, tracer, hollow point, etc. Rhopunzel fucked around with this message at 20:09 on Aug 31, 2019 |
