Glenn Quebec posted:Hmm.. I know that the devs have a singular vision in making this feel rough, industrial like anytime you're onboard something in the film Aliens. I'm not sure where playing the glockenspiel falls into that. I think it would fit the world better SLOT YOUR CREDSTICK. In a space jukebox and play something. idk. That's fair. I'm pretty sure there's not going to be anyone saying "gosh this game could be good if only they added abc instruments."

Oh, here's a really good question: Will there be limbable ladders we can use instead of spacing 'platform' blocks out and hopping up in a straight line over and over like a tool?

Yes, we have the assets ready, they're just not implemented yet. They'll most likely be side-on perspective to save work.

How long range are you planning on making the guns? I assume it's somewhat based on the bullets, but for e.g. that screenshot with the wolves, if the player misses how far is that round going to go? I don't want my terrible aim to mean I accidentally hit some random townsperson on the next screen over.

I imagine that this could be a real possibility. From the horse's mouth: "yeah, it'll be based on bullets pistols won't go much further than a screen sniper rifles will let you pan across assault rifles, probably a screen or two" So yeah, don't gently caress up and shoot your pet goat by accident. Well for people who don't know about the abuse and waste of talent that went in to Starbound, they probably see it as a nice game that is very good for building pretty castles and spacelabs and whatnot. In that regard, to say that this is "like that but with more action" isn't really that far off. Hopefully anyone who's in the know enough to dislike Starbound will be in the know enough to separate the two.

Unfortunately starbound is going to be squatting on the conceptual space like an unflushable turd for the forseeable future. Hopefully yours can stand out some, the combat focus seems like a pretty significant departure certainly.

Combat is the most obvious standout. The pixels...something or another is 16x16 not 8x8 as Starbound. The colony management system is going to be quite robust. And in general --- Rho doesn't have things in place unless they do something. Like... There are going to be mechanical reasons to do things -- other than cosmetically. Clearing the land for making a landing pad, for example. Not just to look cool or industrial -- but so you can actually land something there.

That approach is definitely one of the selling points for me cos yeah, I like making pretty things, but they're so much more enjoyable if they serve an actual purpose. I really like games or mods that combine the two. Thaumcraft for minecraft comes to mind a lot cos the way it's mechanically set up encourages you to make an actual fantasy wizard laboratory, really nice combination of function and form IMO. It's something I liked a lot when Rimworld came out too, the idea that everything about a room determines how good the room is was pretty revolutionary I think. Like rooms aren't just for show, having actual functional rooms with good temperature, spaciousness, lighting, cleanliness etc. All of that determines overall how well they work. Dwarf Fortress obviously did stuff like that too but Rimworld I think was the first game that really exposed the calculations to the player in such a way as to encourage you to really understand what you were building. I'm glad there's going to be something apart from Terraria. As far as I've understood it, Starbound fell short of it and that's why I haven't played it yet even though I've followed it since before the preorders were announced. I'm also glad that guns won't be randomly generated. I liked it in Diablo way back when but then it became ubiquitous and which killed most loot-based games for me.
