Honestly this sort of thing will pay dividends for her party. The sheer crazy gains she made in the Hunter with a dude whose entire thing was he had loads of tattoos and has had the Labor member Fitzgibbon (brother of Bamby-man from NIB) sweating and going "we need to french kiss coal on camera help" not realising people want someone who turns up and loving tries.

Fun part of the union bill is that in order to merge unions it needs to be deemed in the public interest. Which is basically "gently caress you, no" if any union looks to broaden their horizon. I'm sure it's also a coincidence that it wouldn't allow for groups like the CFMEU to form, for sure.

Reckon because Pauline has alot of union support in regional areas. So maybe broken clock.

Hard to celebrate this because it feels like a win for Pauline. Honestly think more shithead ALP votes will bleed to PHON now that she can lay claim to defeating this bill and saving the unions. On the other hand the government can always try to introduce more amendments to secure her vote, and the average LNP pollie would slit a child's throat if it meant they got to poo poo on unions so look forward to the Ensuring Integrity bill passing with a new mosque-demolition amendment.

BBJoey posted:so hang on just so i'm clear here: the Government intends for NBN to hold a monopoly, plans to make it private, but is also going to tax people who don't use it? From what I understand they're trying to make retail service providers pay for the wireless infrastructure that the NBN Co has to build in regional communities. Of course if retail service providers decide to pass the tax onto consumers then really we'll be the ones paying for it. Regarding what services the tax will apply to the following is from an explanatory memoranda associated with the bill: quote:Chargeable premises are premises where a carriage service provider (i.e. a provider of retail broadband services) provides a designated broadband service. A designated broadband service is a carriage service provided over a fixed line that is technically capable of providing download transmission speeds of 25 megabits per second (Mbps) or more. Short answer: basically loving everything. I've currently got TPG FTTB because it's way fuckin better than NBN so me

The tax is on non-NBN services. It's like the Medicare levy surcharge but even dumber.

So if a company tries to sell a non NBN alternative to whatever garbage system the NBN puts in place, be it wireless, FTTN or satellite you get whacked with an extra fee? jesus loving chirst..

hooman posted:So if a company tries to sell a non NBN alternative to whatever garbage system the NBN puts in place, be it wireless, FTTN or satellite you get whacked with an extra fee? It only applies to fixed-line services so wireless is excluded (Something something artificially increasing competitiveness of residential home 4G services to line Telstra's pockets). Also technically it's the service provider that has to pay the fee, not the consumer. However there's nothing stopping them from passing the cost onto consumers and historically that's exactly what has happened.

Individual cases notwithstanding 'people aren't imprisoned enough' is extremely low down the list of problems with the Victorian justice system. Like what world do you live in where scrutiny and public outrage about something like this leads to 'less influence of rich people with lawyers' before 'more indigenous women in prison'

https://www.couriermail.com.au/busi...ebc9ec25035d08d Grilld got the heads up that an article is about to come out accusing them of systematic wage theft. - The founder and managing director of Grill’d has sent a panicked message to staff ahead of an upcoming media article that is expected to raise concerns about the company’s training program. Simon Crowe, who founded the healthy burger chain in Hawthorn in 2004, sent an email to employees at 5.45pm last night titled “urgent update”. A copy of the email was posted to Twitter by UTS journalism student Alex Turner-Cohen, who has previously written for news.com.au. “Any suggestion that we have fallen short of our values is one that I take very seriously,” the email said. “We are aware of a pending media story that will wrongly claim we have worked against the interests of our franchise partners, and our restaurant teams, including how we conduct our training. “At Grill’d we are always seeking to improve our business systems and processes and we have worked hard to make Grill’d a place of work that people can enjoy, including improvements to the quality of Grill’d training.” An accompanying video message was posted to Twitter by another user. “It’s actually come to our attention that there’s a media article about to be released about Grill’d challenging who we are relative to our treatment of franchise partners, the treatment of our teams, and even the culture at Grill’d,” Mr Crowe says in the video. “I personally am very proud of what we’ve created, I hope you are too. The intent of this is to give you an insight to what might lie ahead. “But I also wanted to point out that our values of passion, leadership, ownership and trust have been part of our fabric since the beginning and they remain. “That’s how we will engage with you, we will listen, we will learn and we will always strive to make Grill’d a better place than she is today. The purpose of our business is unchanged. It’s to positively impact the lives of our people and our communities. “I want you to get behind that, I know you do, it is the essence of what happens in our restaurants delivered by you guys with belief, with leadership, with training, with that pizzazz that makes Grill’d and amazing place to be. “Thank you for your support — bleed relish.” In a statement to news.com.au, a Grill’d spokesman said: “Grill’d started out as the little Australian burger joint that has, over 15 years, grown from one start-up outlet to over 130 local businesses. “We are immensely proud of the opportunities we have provided to many thousands of Australians since we opened our first restaurant in Melbourne in March 2004. We are also proud of our people, our product and our culture. “Any suggestion we have fallen short of our high standards will be treated very seriously.” https://twitter.com/binchyleah/status/1199629844339838976?s=20 https://twitter.com/AlexTurnerCohen/status/1199588497570402309?s=20 Long time coming.

I’m just coming from this specific case and others like ambos being bashed get off with nothing. There’s a scale here. I don’t support Derryn Hinch style sex offender lists with mandatory apps to show where they are, and I’m not saying she’s away for life. quote:On October 18, 2017 the child was airlifted from a regional Victorian town to the Royal Children's Hospital, suffering lacerations to her liver and pancreas. She was covered in bruises and there were also extensive injuries to the child's genital area. The justice system should be more focused (or an actual focus!) on rehabilitation. But that is not and never has been and the vast, vast majority of every society on earth still maintains it needs a punishment angle to it as well. This punishment is just so manifestly out of touch with what society at large would expect someone who has digitally penetrated a 5 year old child in her care. It’s absolutely laughable to just fall back on her background for this.

I don't dispute any of this, my point is that in 2019 Australia you will never produce any positive social change based off a case like this that does not bolster right-wing authoritarianism. Look at all the buzzwords in this ('victorian bleeding heart elitist judges releasing aboriginal child rapists'), I can feel Andrew Bolt's saliva - or Stormfront's - dripping down my computer screen already.
