Let's Play Nioh! A game locked in Sekigahara'd mode



Hello everyone and welcome to my play-through of Team Ninja's Nioh, a title released on the PS4 in February of 2017 and then onto PC in November that same year. It's an action role-playing game that takes a few pages out of From Software when it comes to the player death mechanics, but heads off in its own direction with much of the combat and equipment mechanics being a bottomless pit of player tomfoolery if you let it. This isn't an exaggeration either, there are enough weapons, gear sets and statistical modifiers for both of these things to allow patient players the ability to do some fairly ridiculous things beyond the already well-polished gameplay Nioh sets down on the surface level.

Set during the late Sengoku Era of Japan in the early 1600s the story of Nioh puts the player in the role of William, a character based on the historical figure of William Adams. There are many significant historical events, places and people to meet along the way, blended up into a fictional tale of a country where the mystical balance of light and dark has been unsettled by decades of turmoil and conflict. Swords will clash, fiends will roar, many great warriors will rise and fall, and cute dogs will nuzzle as William journeys to find not merely what was taken from him, but also to find within himself the purpose of his existence.

I like Nioh a lot. It's hard to explain why this game gels with me so well, but at the time of writing this introduction I have just shy of 300 hours put into the game on Steam. If the fates are kind and I get through this Let's Play I'll definitely have way more time put up there. I plan on showing every single mission this game has, and I'll be trying to show off as many aspects of the gameplay as a conceivably can. I hope you enjoy this weird pseudo-historical journey as my buddy Coolguye and I ramble about Japanese history, religion and mysticism, and how ludicrously deep this goddamn game is while an Irishman gestures at little green fellas with bowls on their heads.

Also if you want to avoid spoilers I don't recommend looking at the lore section posts below this first post as they will spoiler the goddamn hell out of you.

William – The protagonist of Nioh. An Irish-born Privateer who sets off on an epic journey to Japan in order to take back something precious that was stolen from him. William is a quick study and a capable fighter thanks to the times of turmoil that he has grown up in, and his innate mystical talents allow him to see and defeat the creatures that rise up from the underworld. Yet the strangest thing about our hero is that even were William to be cut down on his quest, he cannot truly die and rises up once more to continue his journey.

Hattori Hanzo – History's greatest ninja, which he might be by default because very other ninja in history was likely fictional. The third in a successive line of men named Hanzo who have served the Tokugawa Clan as retainers and generals, trained in the way of the ninja of the Iga Province. By chance he encounters William and makes him an offer that intertwines their destinies, and perhaps that of the entirety of the nation's.

Okatsu – A Kunoichi trained by Hattori Hanzo, who continues to serve her teacher as an extra set of eyes and another sharp blade to rely on. While her skills in ninjitsu rival that of Hanzo, she lacks his more even temperament and her tongue is sharp. The greatest object of her disdain are samurai and the age of conflict she believes they have brought upon her homeland.

Senji Tome – A Blacksmith of a unique lineage in Japan, Tome tends to her family forge while awaiting the return of her Grandfather, Senji Muramasa . Unlike most any other weapons-maker in Japan Tome's family works with Amrita in their craft, granting their creations attributes that many find otherworldly or abhorrent. With a life spent learning the family business and working in it, Tome enjoys prodding William for stories of his travels and adventures in the outside world.

Kuroda Nagamasa – The very picture of the earnest, honest samurai who is quick to make new friends and slow to forgive old enemies. Nagamasa fights to honour his father and avenge a perceived slight against him, and is not afraid to tell anyone so. However in spite of his martial prowess and enthusiasm to the task, he's no match for the otherwordly nature of Yokai.

Kuroda Kanbei – A former general and tactician of the previous overlord, there are few minds in this era more shrewd, revered and feared than that of Kanbei's. Fuku – An Onmyo Mage of great talent who travels Japan seeking to quell the many spiritual disasters that threaten the nation in this great time of upheaval. Tachibana Genchiyo – The wife of Tachibana Muneshige who safeguards the homefront of her clan. Her relationship with her husband appears fractured on the surface, but their love and bond are far deeper than most can perceive.

Tachibana Muneshige – The man that Toyotomi Hideyoshi declared as the strongest warrior of the western side of Japan, with a skill at arms that well lives up to the moniker. Chivalrous to a fault, Muneshige is an ally of the Ishida army out of loyalty to their now deceased Overlord.

In spite of this his respect for Mitsunari will not allow him to do anything but his absolute best to ensure the Ishida army comes out on top.

Torii Mototada – The first impressions one can get of this aging samurai is of a stubborn old man, and this first impression is entirely correct. Ii Naomasa – Born the son of a disgraced retainer of the Imagawa clan, Naomasa was adopted into a small clan protected by the Tokugawa, known as the Ii. As it was Tokugawa Ieyasu that rescued Naomasa and gave him to the Ii, the red-clad warrior fearlessly leads his cavalry in his lord's name and his body bears a great many scars as a result

Matsunaga Hisahide – Regarded as the greatest villain of the Sengoku Era, Matsunaga Hisahide perished when at long last Oda Nobunaga had tired of the duplicitous lord's betrayals. Yet even this man who betrayed his own clan, burned down a temple and slew a Shogun had another side to him, one that appreciated art and ceremony. So it is that even after death one can find Hisahide maintaining one of the old traditions of his nation.

Sakata Kintoki – A great hero from the Heian Period that has become a deified legend of folklore that persists even in modern times. Renowned for his phenomenal strength and his kind heart, he treads a never-ending path of combat through the underworld to protect the dreams of children from the nightmarish evil of the yokai.

Yagyu Sekishusai – The heir of the Shinkage style of sword-fighting is a man utterly devoted to the way of the sword. The Yagyu family name is famous even today in Japan, a great many stories revolving around his son and grandson who played roles in the early decades of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Ishida Mitsunari (Human. Yokai – From a young age Ishida Mitsunari was groomed as a retainer for Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the talented young man rose to become one of the Toyotomi's Justice Ministers. When the Tokugawa made moves to take control in the wake of Hideyoshi's death, Mitsunari in turn began rallying allies and marshalling forces to defeat them. Loyalty and Justice are the notions that drive Mitsunari, and his convictions have made him far more enemies than allies.

Tokugawa Ieyasu – Throughout Japan the man known as “The Tanuki” was often spoken of in terms of his cunning and patience, waiting for the right moment of weakness in Japan's power structure to strike and take it for his own. Yet this depiction ignores his history as a man who has spent almost his entire life embroiled in the conflicts of the Sengoku Era, and overlooks all that he has lost compared to all he has gained. A great burden rests on the shoulders of Tokugawa Ieyasu, to ensure all those lost were not in vain and to bring lasting peace to his nation.

Senji Muramasa – The name Muramasa is given to the head of the Senji clan of Blacksmiths upon assumption of their position, the current Murasama being Tome's grandfather. Arguably the greatest lineage of weapon-makers in Japanese history, many are the weapons used by great warriors made by a Muramasa, and many more are the blades claimed to by made by them to falsely enhance a person's status.

Honda Tadakatsu – A retainer of the Tokugawa whose legend as a general and warrior towers over all his comrades, leaving him regarded as the greatest warrior of the east in the Sengoku Era. One of the greatest legends surrounding Honda Tadakatsu's martial prowess is the fact that his body bore no scars of war, even though he has spent decades at the forefront of the Tokugawa clan's war efforts.

Saika Magoichi – The Saika were a clan of mercenary warriors with strong ties to the rebellious Buddhist sects and merchant traders of the Sengoku Era, and clashed on many occasions with the Oda in their fights for autonomy. The name Saika Magoichi and the guardian spirit Yatagarasu are inherited by each leader upon their ascension to the position, and this particular figure is the third to have done so. A master of guerilla warfare, this Magoichi strikes from the sky with a terrifying hail of gunpowder.

Otani Yoshitsugu (Human, Yokai) – A fellow Minister of Justice during the Toyotomi rule of Japan, Yoshitsugu shares a deep bond with Ishida Mitsunari that has seen him side with his friend in the war of East versus West. Though his body is ruined by disease and his death is surely looming, the talented general does not resign himself to a bed to pass away quietly, instead seeking whatever means he can to help his close friend as much as he can.

The Obsidian Samurai – Freed from a life of slavery and raised to the station of a samurai, the man known as Yasuke faithfully served Oda Nobunaga even beyond the day his lord died. Having constantly kept the body of Oda Nobunaga safe from those who might misuse it, he has allowed himself to fall into the promise of the return of his lord to life.

Oda Nobunaga – Once called “The Fool of Owari” for his unconventional behaviour, soon Oda Nobunaga became a man on the cusp of ruling Japan as its Overlord. Though betrayed by his own subordinate and slain amidst the fires of Honno-ji, he has now been resurrected by Edward Kelley to rekindle the fires of war anew.

Edward Kelley – The primary antagonist of Nioh. An English Alchemist who travels to Japan to worsen the conflict there in order to harvest more Amrita for the British Empire's war with Spain. He knows many dark sorceries, and whispers many more dark promises into the ears of those with ambitions. His Guardian Spirit is Ouroboros, a menacing snake that can capture other Guardian Spirits within its maw so that its master may make use of them.

Derrick the Executioner (Human, Demon) – A giant of a man destined to tumble many heads from their shoulders within the Tower of London, including that of the man who first pardoned him and gave him his role. Revolutionised hanging and the crane industry.

John Dee – The spy-master of Queen Elizabeth is a man of incredible talent when it comes to the alchemical arts, able to create life using Amrita and turn average men into powerful demons. All he does is in the name of his country, but he is heedless of the cost in lives required to fuel his personal demand for power.

Date Masamune – The head of the Date Clan is a man who is both peerless warrior and consummate leader, burning with an ambition to see his people ascendant and rulers of Japan. Known as the One-Eyed Dragon for his fearsome prowess and countenance, his mere presence ensures that the Sengoku Era has not ended at Sekigahara.

Date Shigezane (Demon Form, Human Form) – One of the three great pillars of the Date Clan, retainers that have served Date Masamune throughout his stewardship of Oshu to ensure its prosperity. Shigezane is a warrior that earned the title of “Demon” through his ferocity in combat, but his use of Amrita has corrupted him to make it far more literal.

Katakura Shigenaga – As son of Kojiro, one of the Great Pillars of the Date Clan and a legendarily wise advisor and strategist, the young and earnest Shigenaga has tremendous shoes to fill within the clan. Yet the young man is undaunted in striving to learn and excel, and the new conflicts the Date Clan finds themselves embroiled in giving him ample opportunities for both.

Sarutobi Sasuke – The greatest ninja that never existed, Sarutobi Sasuke was a fictional character created in a time long after the Siege of Osaka when stories began to romanticise Sanada Yukimura. The ninja is depicted most commonly as the leader of a group of elite warriors from different origins known as “Sanada's Ten Braves” who had all united under the charismatic Yukimura's lead. So popular were these tales that the name “Sasuke” is still synonymous with “ninja” in modern Japan.

Lady Yodogimi – Of all those that lived in the Sengoku Era, there are few who knew the pain of loss that comes from war as keenly as Lady Yodogimi. As a child she lost her parents in two separate conflicts and was claimed as a young wife by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, whom also passed away and left her to raise their child Hideyori. Seen as a gentle and compassionate woman who seeks to raise her son to what she sees as his rightful place as the ruler of Japan, there is a twinkle of something strange in her eyes that all have failed to see.

Toyotomi Hideyori – Though Toyotomi Hideyoshi had many wives and mistresses in his time, only one child was ever born to him. Still a child when his father passed away, Hideyori was passed off as an imbecile by his advisors to ensure that the Tokugawa Shogunate did not see him as a threat. Yet when he came of age and the aged Ieyasu met the young man the deceit was revealed, as Hideyori was every bit of the charismatic and intelligent man his father was, and his father was a man who went from lowly peasant to ruling all of Japan. It is fear of this young man that brings the Tokugawa to lay siege to his home, and the hope of others that have brought them to fight and die to see him rise to his late father's place and control the nation.

Dweller – The body of a miner that perished but rose again to seek to spread the misery of its demise to others. Though they seem slow and zombie-like when they clutch their picks in their hands, it is when a Dweller abandons all pretence of being human that they become frightening foes.

Skeleton Warrior (Standard, Large) – For warriors that perish with lingering negative emotions, peace in the afterlife is less assured. Some fallen warriors may rise again with their weapons clutched in rotted fingers, striking out at the unfortunates who disturb their place of demise.

Yoki (Standard, Ninja, Weak) – The use of Amrita is not without risks, and those that fall into its power can transform into terrible, oni-like fiends. Consumed with blood-lust these Yokai emerge to fight and kill any living being they come across, regardless of whether or not their victims are capable of defending themselves.

One-Eyed Oni – Unlike the Yoki who are created from humans, these Cyclopean Fiends are formed from more beastly and primal elements in nature. Their immense bodies are as powerful as they look, and though their fists can strike with crushing force their sheer bulk propelled through the air is no less deadly.

Nurikabe – Not every Yokai that one can encounter in Japan is a bloodthirsty fiend that is bound to attack a person on sight. Some just enjoy being a nuisance, or seek a moment of communication with any human that comes their way. The Nurikabe is a Yokai that takes the form of a wall and blocks off pathways, but a traveller may convince them to move on if they choose their manners correctly. Failure to stay on this wall-Yokai's good side will always end in crushing disappointment.

Kappa – The Kappa is a cowardly river imp that seeks to drown the unwary, or even worse to steal their souls out from their anus before pilfering their belongings. The shell of the Kappa is where they store their rectally-acquired Amrita, giving it a great resistance to any blows that land upon it. They will seek to flee from anyone that attacks them, but should they be defeated the victor will gain a bounty in riches.

Oni-bi (Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth, Wind) – When a lingering soul combines with a singular elemental power it is possible for these flying demon-heads to appear. Though most commonly seen in the aspect of fire, the Oni-bi can also be made of the elements of water, wind, lightning and earth. Weak but persistent in their attacks, a defeated Oni-bi will imbue its elemental typing upon the weapon that strikes it down.

Wheelmonk – The origin of this flame-wreathed yokai claims to be one of cruel and bloodthirsty generals forced into punishment in the afterlife. Their disembodied head all but shaved in penitence but for long threads that are lashed to a burning ox-cart wheel, there is no sign of contrition in the behaviour of these entities. Wherever a Wheelmonk goes a trail of fire, death and pitiless laughter follows.

Biwa Boku-Boku – A physically weak yokai that takes the form of a lute, and uses its music to lure travellers to their demise. So otherworldly are its strings the Biwa Boku-Boku can summon Oni-bi from thin air, or raise the dead as revenants to fight on their behalf.

One-Eyed Imp – These particular Yokai take the form of a small child and act in a manner that appears non-threatening, but when dealing with fiends one must always expect some manner of trick or catch. Should one of these Imps absorb enough Amrita they take on a temporary transformation, and destruction follows in their wake.

Sentry – Within the ancient and hidden places of Japan are great treasures waiting to be found, and dangerous guardians that have ensured no one has set eyes on these prizes and lived. Stone statues infused with Amrita Stones take on the aspect of a devoted guard, relentlessly pursuing intruders until either their target is killed or they are destroyed.

Mujina – Another type of Trickster Yokai not far removed from the likes of the Tanuki, the Mujina is a shapeshifter that enjoys hiding within chests to catch treasure-hunters by surprise. Though they will fight if suitably upset by their “playmate” a Mujina will happily give up the treasure it holds if one is willing to communicate with them.

Onyudo (Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth, Wind) – Their name meaning “giant priest”, the Onyudo is a monk that has fallen to temptation and indulged in their worldly desires to the point that they have ceased to be human. They direct their colossal strength not merely through their large fists but also using their bizarre prehensile tongue, both hands and tongue charged with elemental energies that leave any survivors of their brutal assaults afflicted with additional impairment.

Lesser Umi-bozu – Drowning is a miserable fate for a samurai, and the grudge that persists after their passing is no less so. Now they persist as animated bodies of water that seek to share this fate with others in turn.

Karakasa Umbrella – A Yokai in the form of a parasol, with a penchant for leaping out and scaring people. Its single leg is incredibly powerful which allows it to leap itself into the air and perform a variety of acrobatic feats that might seem impossible, and it can also project spines from the 'ribs' of the umbrella to inflict paralysis. Though not particularly strong, the Karakasa Umbrella is a challenge to pin down long enough to attack.

Amrita Fiend (Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, Lightning) – When a Yoki has condensed Amrita driven into its body its power increases immensely, at the cost of what little counts for a mind in this kind of Yokai. These large spikes of Amrita are typically attuned to an element that the Fiend can draw on for its attacks, but there is a drawback to this much power. Should one attack the Amrita Fiend with the element matching that of their spikes, it is possible to overload them with energy to the point their body can no longer control it and cause a violent explosion that tears the fiend asunder.

Raven Tengu – Tengu are bird-like humanoids that occupy different mountainous regions of Japan. Gifted with the power to manipulate the elements of wind with little effort, these yokai are able to raise themselves into the sky upon their wide-spanning wings, and fling great blasts of wind at their enemies. Their motivations appear opposed to Buddhism and often they attempt to lead the pious into ruin whilst also adopting the guise of priests themselves, but are not above using the signature travelling staves as a bludgeon in direct combat.

Spider – It is not unheard of that Amrita can be absorbed by animals, who are then distorted by its influence and turned into man-eating monsters. In this case the humble spider has become a terrifying creature that attempts to bind its victims within its webbing so that they may feed on their life essence. Their sizes range wildly depending on the degree of Amrita absorbed, with some being so large they could drag down a horse.

Flying Bolt – A ghost yokai that resembles a woman garbed in an endlessly winding bolt of cotton cloth, though it is safer to consider the cloth an actual part of the Flying Bolt's being. The combination of a cloth that can extend long distances with the yokai manipulating every fiber of its being effortlessly means that few can escape this fiend's reach, one that tangles about its prey and slows their struggles.

Mudman – Just as those who perish in water may return as an Umi-bozu, so too can someone who drowns in mud return as a Mudman. There is little good one can say of such a fate, so it's hardly a surprise that a Mudman seeks to spread its misery with others.

Onryoki – When someone dies with a particularly strong negative emotion they can become an Onyro, a vengeful spirit that seeks to spread the curse of its grudge amongst the living. Should there be enough of these ghosts together then they can form a giant seething mass of rage called Onryoki, their grudge enforced through the terrifying strength running throughout the entirety of their titantic amalgamated form.

Hino-enma – A Yokai that seduces men with the form of a beautiful maiden in order to drain them of their blood until they are dead. Sharing qualities with bats, they are capable of flight and projecting their voice as a directed sonic attack that can paralyse anyone struck by it. Either by clouding their mind or immobilizing their body the Hino-enma cares little how their prey falls into their grasp, simply that their desire to feed is sated if only for a short moment before moving on to the next.

Nue – A terrifying lightning Chimera formed of parts from a monkey, snake, tiger and dog. Its muddled lineage grants this Yokai a variety of potent abilities and tremendous strength, and its body is wreathed in mystical black smoke that can obscure it when it wishes to hide away. In fighting a Nue one must fight a raging storm, as this legendary Yokai is capable of calling bolts of lightning down from the heavens at will.

Great Centipede – The poisonous conditions of the Iwami-Ginzan Silver Mine coupled with its hidden reserves of Amrita created strange rocks that expelled a dense fog of choking gas that killed many miners. Compounding on this terrible event the spirit of a centipede of ancient origins exerted its influence upon many of these stones to construct itself a new body so that it may feed once more on flesh. Now otherwise inert poison-belching stones scurry through the tunnels of the mine at the whim of an undead insect intelligence.

Umi-bozu – This massive yokai is a master of the seas, and it is said that they can summon great storms at will. The huge chunk of Amrita that makes up its core grants the Umi-bozu incredible energy, and from its body it can shape itself crushing limbs, or draw up debris from the depths to hurl at its foes.

Joro-Gumo – When the Oda army crushed Matsunaga Hisahide's rebellion a great deal of negative emotions were left behind in their wake. The fates of all those who died with regrets or anger in their heart were bound together as though they were strands of a great web, and all were drawn to the center of this web where fragments of Hisahide's beloved tea set Hiragumo rested. As a foci for all this negative energy the Hiragumo became a fearsome Yokai bearing the upper body of a noblewoman and the lower body of a massive spider.

Yuki-onna – In places where snowstorms are common, there are stories of ghostly maidens that may come across travellers in the wilderness and attempt to lure them to their death. More stories posit that the Yuki-onna themselves are the ones who cause fierce snowstorms to occur, though to create one out of season would indicate a spirit of incredible power.

White Tiger – Within many parts of Asia there have been myths based around guardian entities that reside within the four cardinal directions, and occupying the West is a powerful white-furred tiger. This Yokai's incarnation has resulted from the tremendous amounts of negative energy sealed within Mount Hiei being released, absorbed into a Guardian Spirit and transforming it into a dangerous god-beast.

Giant Toad – There are many reasons a Ninja Yokai may appear in the form of a Giant Toad, which range from the legends of ninjas being able to transform themselves into frogs, to stories of toads living long enough to gain human level consciousness and awareness. The truth of this Giant Toad however may be that he simply wished to take this form, to better pass on his Iga Ninja teachings to the next generation of protectors that come before him.

Ogress – Long after a person dies the grudges they carried can continue to exist in this world, keeping their spirit from finding any peace and driving them to inflict suffering on the living. The Ogress is a manifestation of the grudge of a mother whose son was killed, a massive yokai crying in grief and screaming in anger as she seeks a revenge that can never truly be as the world moves on from her tragic moment in history.

Gasha-dokuro – Created by the dark magic of Edward Kelley, this massive skeleton is composed of thousands of grudge-filled souls who have perished at Sekigahara. It projects its morbid energy-sapping ki throughout the area around it, enhanced even further by spikes of Amrita scattered about the battlefield.

Yamata-no-Orochi (First Head, Second Head, Fire Head, Water Head, Wind Head, Lightning Head, Earth Head, Final Head) – In the stories of Japanese mythology there is no Yokai tale older than the story of Yamata-no-Orochi. In the tale of the storm god Susanoo the great eight-headed serpent was said to be the size of eight valleys and eight hills, and was only bested when lulled into sleep by eight vats of alcohol and carved into pieces with a god's blade while it slept in a stupor. To bring about its return would require great amounts of Amrita, and a madness seeking to bring complete ruin to Japan.

Hundred Eyes – Taking on a vast amount of Amrita into himself, John Dee's appearance becomes that of a twisted sorcerer with a great many eyes that see far beyond that of a mortal's vision. It is the embodiment of one man's obsession to know and to control all things, even in lands far from his own.

Snowclops – One-Eyed Oni are typically created from the primal elements of nature mingled with the power of Amrita, and so it is some are born from the great tremendous fury of a snowstorm and become powerful elementals of ice. This difference in origin grants this Oni some measure of power tied to snow, but their overwhelming strength is still their most dangerous asset.

Fox Spirit – Like many creatures exposed to Amrita, it is possible for a Fox to become a Yokai. Intelligent and sly, Fox Spirits are capable spell-casters that can wield various elements to attack their enemy. The older one of these Yokai gets the more powerful they become, their age and rank denoted by the number of tails that they have grown.

Harinobo – A common theme in Japanese Spiritualism is the idea of items developing minds and identities of their own through their use, and likewise through their neglect. The Harinobo is a blob of ectoplasm full of malice and pointy objects. Angered at being discarded, this collection of needles and blades lashes out at a world that has left them to rust.

Namahage – While many Yokai as regarded as outright malicious creatures, the Namahage are typically seen as creatures that despise indolence. Their primary interest is in scaring the lazy into working, a task made simple by their terrifying visage.

Rokurokubi – A Yokai that comes into being when a human is struck by a curse, a Rokurokubi possesses an elongated and prehensile neck that swings and writhes about. It is difficult to tell is a person has such a curse till their neck extends, and there are many tales of people being unaware they are so afflicted.

Red Kappa – Though Kappa are often considered to be cowardly creatures, in the cold northern regions there is a type known for their larger size, red skin and aggressive demeanour.

Magatsu Warrior – The vilest of dark experimentation with corpses and Amrita has brought about a terrifying four-armed warrior that even the most gifted warrior would fail against. Capable of absorbing Amrita within itself to launch from its blades as projectile attacks, the closest thing to a weakness they possess is their extra arms being weak to targeted attacks. Yet even without their bonus appendages these undead yokai are fast, relentless and powerful and should only be approached by experienced warrior yokai hunters.

Onmoraki – When the spirits of fallen warriors are left unattended on the battlefield it is possible that their grudges combine together and form a bird whose size is relative to their number. Though the Onmoraki of Osaka Castle is so large it could like blot out the sun with its wings, its very cry casts the world into a world of chaos and darkness, as the resentment of the ghosts that make its form seek nothing more than the opportunity to slay the living that they may share in their terrible after-life.

Nine-Tailed Fox – Throughout its history there have been many powerful yokai who have threatened the safety of the country through their actions, but few have ever been so insidious and subtle as Tamamo-no-Mae. Countless times across both China and Japan has this yokai infiltrated the courts of Emperors as a beautiful maiden and brought great chaos from within, driven off only after she has done tremendous damage and led many to slow and brutal deaths. As a fox spirit with all nine tails, Tamamo-no-Mae has potent magical power to draw upon, and the very boundaries between the human and yokai worlds blur when she is finally brought to combat.

Nioh is happy to teach! One of the nice things about the game is it's going to give plenty of information regarding the era and the people in it. We'll even have some missions about people and events that happened before William's arrival.

The size of Nioh is really daunting for an LP but it's been really easy to record footage for so far. When I sit down to record I knock out a main mission and every single side mission in a matter of a couple of hours, and because the game is so much fun I tend to find myself eager to get down to it. The hardest thing to deal with is FRAPS just plain not working for it, and OBS making such a large file I need to encode it down to have any chance of ever being able to view in any kind of editor.

One thing that always bothered me though was this, they have this great multilingual setup, everyone speaks their own languages and does so well. William pronounces Japanese well when it he has to use a few words in a sentence. But they didn't take a few minutes to coach the voice actor in how to pronounce 5 ship names in Dutch, he doesn't even try, they just get butchered.

Knowing zero Dutch myself I'm interested that's a thing they beefed, and I apologise in advance because I will be saying it the butchered way for a video or two.

Like I said in the video I did in fact visit the modern tourist-trap/crown jewel vault that The Tower of London is now in July and it was pretty interesting but also pretty darn depressing, especially since a lot of the graffiti etched into the walls of people who were imprisoned and usually executed there were well preserved. Apparently they had a cell for people they particularly didn't like where it was physically impossible to even sit down inside it, it was so small. A fun fact I liked was that an American man was imprisoned there during the war for independence, who was mortified he had to pay for his lodgings and meals during his 'stay'.

There aren't many "happy" stories about the Tower of London.

It's the route they took! I'll talk a little about why they tried it that way in the next video but needless to say they had terrible plan that went about as well as a terrible plan could be expected to go.

One of Nioh's flaws is that in spite of their attempts to give an "authentic" experience with language their localization from Japanese to English is pretty spotty. Primarily during cutscenes. I feel like whoever worked on that stuff didn't have a script and was just cupping an ear and listening to what the characters were saying and working from there.

Onryoki – When someone dies with a particularly strong negative emotion they can become an Onyro, a vengeful spirit that seeks to spread the curse of its grudge amongst the living. Should there be enough of these ghosts together then they can form a giant seething mass of rage called Onryoki, their grudge enforced through the terrifying strength running throughout the entirety of their titantic amalgamated form.

Nope, that one is always there. Nioh's kind of funny in that it gives you the arguably hardest of the three Yoki types in the first real level and then gives us the weakest one a bit later. The Twilight version of the level also has a Ninja Yoki in the lower part of the shortcut where you kick down the ladder, near the first shrine.

Kinda funny how a trailer for the sequel appeared just as I watching the latest update.

Oh man, that looks great. Those bosses and enemies look way crazier than what we're getting right now. That's not to say the bosses in Nioh aren't wild in their own way but the Nioh 2 ones are ramping it up a bit. The alpha I got to play of Nioh 2 had two stages with two bosses and they were pretty nuts. Also for those wondering, the Nioh 2 Living Weapon system is being changed so now you turn into a Fiend-like creature yourself, with the Guardian Spirit dictating what form/moveset that is, as opposed to Nioh's system where the moveset is dictated by the weapons.

I could talk about what I got out of two stages in Nioh 2's Alpha for HOURS but hey, gonna spend that energy on the first one instead.

A double-header you say? Yeah I decided to split this one up because the first video is menu chat, while the second video is actual side-mission gameplay. That way people don't have to flick through the words words words if they just want to see the chop chop chop. I also decided to release them both at once because making everyone wait a week for an 11 minutes shop-chat video followed by another week wait for a 17 minute video seemed kinda shite.

With a life spent learning the family business and working in it, Tome enjoys prodding William for stories of his travels and adventures in the outside world.

I think my favorite minor aesthetic thing in Nioh is how ABSOLUTELY STRAPPED your character is. Like, every single weapon you have equipped is actually shown on your character at all times. So you're just wandering around with a huge Odachi, a Katana, a full longbow, and a goddamn flintlock, WHILE in your full armor and you're just rolling and running around without batting an eye. It's the perfect mix of ridiculousness and awesomeness. It's one of those minor things that so few games do, but is just awesome to see when games actually show off how much ridiculous stuff is just completely tied all over your character.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more of the weapons and seeing the ninja stuff. Almost all the Nioh content I've seen has primarily only been like, Spear/Odachi stuff with almost no Ninja/Onmyoji stuff being done. So I'm really interested to see how all the weapons and the different styles and skills and all that awesome stuff works out. The Ninja stuff being refreshable consumable items is actually a really interesting mechanic and it looks like there's a LOT of interesting items you're able to choose from later.

The ninja items I tend to use won't be unlocked for a while, same with the magic. I'll do my best to show it off when I get to it but otherwise I'm hoarding my points or spending them on passives.

Yeah we never mention that, it's basically armour that assaults your weight. I tend to favour lighter stuff cause Agility Attack Bonus is great when you get it and Spirit Defense Bonus on some light gear is fantastic. We're going to use all the weapon types and it's going to be a mixed bag lemme tell ya, and not just for the Samurai points oh no. If we want to show off every single stage in the game it's basically mandatory!

In spite of the fact we're going to go into a deep, bandit-infested cave, we're going to start seeing some of the charm that Nioh has coming out in both story and gameplay. Kuroda Nagamasa – The very picture of the earnest, honest samurai who is quick to make new friends and slow to forgive old enemies. Nagamasa fights to honour his father and avenge a perceived slight against him, and is not afraid to tell anyone so. However in spite of his martial prowess and enthusiasm to the task, he's no match for the otherwordly nature of Yokai.

Kuroda Kanbei – A former general and tactician of the previous overlord, there are few minds in this era more shrewd, revered and feared than that of Kanbei's. Even as his body falls apart under the strain of an old wound, he holds onto his old ambitions and takes every little advantage that comes his way in order to see his son's future prosper.

Okatsu – A Kunoichi trained by Hattori Hanzo, who continues to serve her teacher as an extra set of eyes and another sharp blade to rely on. While her skills in ninjitsu rival that of Hanzo, she lacks his more even temperament and her tongue is sharp. The greatest object of her disdain are samurai and the age of conflict she believes they have brought upon her homeland.

Skeleton Warrior (Standard, Large) – For warriors that perish with lingering negative emotions, peace in the afterlife is less assured. Some fallen warriors may rise again with their weapons clutched in rotted fingers, striking out at the unfortunates who disturb their place of demise.

One-Eyed Oni – Unlike the Yoki who are created from humans, these Cyclopean Fiends are formed from more beastly and primal elements in nature. Their immense bodies are as powerful as they look, and though their fists can strike with crushing force their sheer bulk propelled through the air is no less deadly.

Nurikabe – Not every Yokai that one can encounter in Japan is a bloodthirsty fiend that is bound to attack a person on sight. Some just enjoy being a nuisance, or seek a moment of communication with any human that comes their way. The Nurikabe is a Yokai that takes the form of a wall and blocks off pathways, but a traveller may convince them to move on if they choose their manners correctly. Failure to stay on this wall-Yokai's good side will always end in crushing disappointment.

Kappa – The Kappa is a cowardly river imp that seeks to drown the unwary, or even worse to steal their souls out from their anus before pilfering their belongings. The shell of the Kappa is where they store their rectally-acquired Amrita, giving it a great resistance to any blows that land upon it. They will seek to flee from anyone that attacks them, but should they be defeated the victor will gain a bounty in riches.

Hino-enma – A Yokai that seduces men with the form of a beautiful maiden in order to drain them of their blood until they are dead. Sharing qualities with bats, they are capable of flight and projecting their voice as a directed sonic attack that can paralyse anyone struck by it. Either by clouding their mind or immobilizing their body the Hin-enma cares little how their prey falls into their grasp, simply that their desire to feed is sated if only for a short moment before moving on to the next.

I can always recommend slapping some revenants for gear and Amrita. Also it's easier to run sideways to avoid her screaming attack and her diving attack. "Don't get greedy" is probably the biggest thing, and don't expect to be matching how I do it because I've fought her so many times I feel like I know what she's going to do before she does it. There's also a dude's comments in the video who outlines some interesting facts about the boss as well that might help. Don't get discouraged!

Today we return to the village for one last side mission. We can't really tell you if it's the last side mission because the game simply moves on, or it's because there isn't a village there any more. They should probably just sink the island.

Oni-bi (Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth, Wind) – When a lingering soul combines with a singular elemental power it is possible for these flying demon-heads to appear. Though most commonly seen in the aspect of fire, the Oni-bi can also be made of the elements of water, wind, lightning and earth. Weak but persistent in their attacks, a defeated Oni-bi will imbue its elemental typing upon the weapon that strikes it down.

Wheelmonk – The origin of this flame-wreathed yokai claims to be one of cruel and bloodthirsty generals forced into punishment in the afterlife. Their disembodied head all but shaved in penitence but for long threads that are lashed to a burning ox-cart wheel, there is no sign of contrition in the behaviour of these entities. Wherever a Wheelmonk goes a trail of fire, death and pitiless laughter follows.

Yeah, in Nioh especially they look great I was just pretty much not used to the parry window for the kuri due to barely ever using it. The katana and I are friendly enough with one another I can do its parries a lot more reliably. Coolguy has strong opinions on them and he's not wrong but at the same time they're not even remotely essential towards beating the game and I like the flourish they add to making your bushido feel big and strong.

One of the funny things about the Katana in Nioh is that you have (I think) two parries you can do, but on top of that you can also get a "block at the right time to stagger the enemy" move AND a "block at the right time when hitting an enemy who is blocking to shove them off balance" move. I can never get the timing right on the latter but drat if I don't wish all the weapons had that function because Revenants in heavy armour can get super block-happy.

Anyway, I can't say I like parries in the Souls games either. That said, the principle of the parry is simple enough in the first Dark Souls. Your parry window is at the beginning of the parry animation no matter what equipment you parry with. The animation does not tell how long that window is though. An enemy can be parried if its attack is parry-able and the window is simple when the attack hits you. Dark Souls 2 makes it more complicated.

The Nioh Spear Helicopter is unfortunately going to end up being something like episode 30 before we see it, which honestly is upsetting for me because when I do record it, even aware it is going to be happening, you will see a primal fear response spill out in my control of William when it happens and honestly you all seeing it now would be fantastic but we all have to wait. Keep in mind I've now recorded 22 episodes worth of footage in advance (and we have commentary recorded for all 22 so far) and the moment of peril is still not close at hand for me.

I will run away crying when it happens is what I'm saying.

William goes on a search and rescue mission only to find that one boss that most people don't find particularly hard but for some reason I struggle with every time I play this game. Remember that dumb poo poo boss in Dark Souls 2 that is really fat and rolls around and that's it? I might be the only person who died to it like 10 times before beating it. Thankfully this one is way less embarrassing to lose to.

Mujina – Another type of Trickster Yokai not far removed from the likes of the Tanuki, the Mujina is a shapeshifter that enjoys hiding within chests to catch treasure-hunters by surprise. Nue – A terrifying lightning Chimera formed of parts from a monkey, snake, tiger and dog. Its muddled lineage grants this Yokai a variety of potent abilities and tremendous strength, and its body is wreathed in mystical black smoke that can obscure it when it wishes to hide away. In fighting a Nue one must fight a raging storm, as this legendary Yokai is capable of calling bolts of lightning down from the heavens at will.

Muneshige was an honorable man and in spite of the implication of what happened there in the spirit division, Muneshige felt that he owed the Toyotomi Clan deeply for their aid back when Hideyoshi was establishing himself. This cost him greatly in the end, something that won't be discussed until the DLC stuff actually because that's when it's relevant but yes, historically the Tachibana Clan sided with Ishida. Thing is right now because we've helped him out and he's a top bloke, Muneshige has no intention of trying to harm William and Hanzo either.

Whoops I almost forgot to update this week cause I had all my wisdom teeth pulled out. It's not that anything went wrong, it just went so right I blissfully had no cares in the world. Here's the next update! William does some work-time with his two new trainers, and follows it up with a spot of shopping with someone else's wife. It's fine I'm sure we already have her spirit dog.

Also in this video I make some statements regarding the uniqueness of the level's layout, and I'm pretty much wrong on both counts regarding its Kodama stuff and its Twilight level status. There are other side-quest levels that feature both but I somehow forgot all the other ones, and won't realise until some way down the line. My baaaaaaad.

Yeah, from what I can poke around in historically Hideyoshi did invite Ginchiyo to his residence of Nagoya Castle when Muneshige was off in the Korean invasion, but she always turned up with her armed escorts and so he kept his distance. I've never really seen where the whole "He used his power to have his way with her" thing came from but there are lots of rumours that swirl around from that period of things that did happen or maybe happened or could have happened, and Genchiyo's inability to bear any children coupled with those visits are the foundation it is built on so who knows? The whole "Hideyoshi feared angering Genchiyo" thing could be the cover-rumour for all we know these days. Nioh plays with a lot of speculation and rumour like that and uses it to tell William a story of the land he's in and the people he meeting and the burdens they bear. We've got one more side to the tale yet, and that's going to come as a result of facing down her husband in a duel.

What I do know is that Ginchiyo kicked rear end and did not stop kicking rear end till the day she passed away.

Weirdly, poking around the internet loads of people tended to call the Odachi a weak weapon. I don't know if it's me or the internet wrong or subsequent patches that changed it. The Axe is a good weapon though! I've used it for playthroughs and it worked out fine. I've just spent most of my time using the Odachi so I get the most mileage out of it.

I was lucky enough not to get pain or swelling, but it was still sort of eating into my sleep and I had to drink some energy stuff to keep myself from just slumping around.

Also for those interested in the Nioh series the PS4 Open Beta for Nioh 2 opens up Nov 1 to Nov 10. It seems to be rolling across timezones so if you're in Australia you can get it right now and everywhere else once it hits Nov 1. Aside from having all the weapons from Nioh: Complete Edition there's also two new weapons in the form of the Twin Hatchets (twin-axes you can throw) and a Switch-Glaive (weird looking scythe that changes its form when you change stances). The Switch-Glaive scales off magic, which means now there's an onmyo magic build weapon just waiting to be exploited. Beating the Open Beta's levels will give you a unique piece of headgear when you get the game once it releases in what appears to be March.

Well at least one mission had to be the least interesting main mission in the game and this one is it. It honestly wouldn't be too bad if not for the fact that the level's boss decided to have a competition with this region's other main mission boss for who could be the worst boss fight in the game. This one still won.

I've included all the entries for this particular boss in its profile update specifically because it does not appear at any other point in the game, which necessitates playing this level three times to get its lore.

Great Centipede – The poisonous conditions of the Iwami-Ginzan Silver Mine coupled with its hidden reserves of Amrita created strange rocks that expelled a dense fog of choking gas that killed many miners. Compounding on this terrible event the spirit of a centipede of ancient origins exerted its influence upon many of these stones to construct itself a new body so that it may feed once more on flesh. Now otherwise inert poison-belching stones scurry through the tunnels of the mine at the whim of an undead insect intelligence.

They direct their colossal strength not merely through their large fists but also using their bizarre prehensile tongue, both hands and tongue charged with elemental energies that leave any survivors of their brutal assaults afflicted with additional impairment.

Nioh really doesn't do the "Giant Boss" thing too well and never does it stick out more than this region where they're the only bosses and they're both pretty suck. But yeah the level itself is a stand-out level coming up. Looks great and also just messes your poo poo up. Love it.

It's time for a very cool level! But also time for another boss that isn't really that fun. This is the duality of man, or something. Maybe just the duality of water levels. Regardless of whose duality this is, William can't leave until he takes care of this big blob of water summoning storms.

Just like before, this level's boss is not one we'll ever see again so all three of its entries are going up now.

Lesser Umi-bozu – Drowning is a miserable fate for a samurai, and the grudge that persists after their passing is no less so. Now they persist as animated bodies of water that seek to share this fate with others in turn.

Umi-bozu – This massive yokai is a master of the seas, and it is said that they can summon great storms at will. The huge chunk of Amrita that makes up its core grants the Umi-bozu incredible energy, and from its body it can shape itself crushing limbs, or draw up debris from the depths to hurl at its foes.

If I said "level" I misspoke, it's actually for each region we visit that the Kodama counter resets.

Umi-Bozu is probably the best of the big bosses. We've seen the drat centipede which is bad but there is another big one thats just.. The worst.

I feel like the higher our level gets and the larger our tool-kit gets the less atrocious fighting these big bosses gets. But I do disagree on the "best" title for the Umi-bozu. I find some of the other ones far less obnoxious.
