Like, I already know I like Sir Duke, it's not new information, but I'm not exactly gonna, like, skip Sir Duke

Gotta be patient, the music is going at a rate of 1 second per second

Contusion is an interesting offering to be coming from Stevie Wonder as it's basically a prog-rock instrumental. I feel like it'd fit in on a Boston or Yes album

Sir Duke is of course a classic

Contusion has a neat story as it's basically a spur of the moment studio creation. Chick Corea was recording across the hall from Wonder and he stepped in to listen and was like "I want to do some of that too"

That's the sorta cool stuff we lose in the era of home studios.

The same thing happens all the time except over DM and the Internet so it's actually more accessible and you don't need to be able to afford studio time

I guess so. Don't get me wrong I'm not some studio purist and I think the advent of quality home recording equipment is one of the best things to ever happen... like in general...

But I'd give my home studio up in an instant to be able to record in a professional environment with grizzled engineers

So buy studio time and hire some to work with you

Pepe just a heads-up, if you're using the same playlist I am you might wanna find a different version of I Wish

the one it has is a live performance and he has the crowd sing the first two lines and it cuts out like two-thirds of the way through for some reason

Knocks Me Off My Feet is I think the first one I'm not as into. It's the kind of smooth-jazz muzak type stuff that turns me off of Stevie's slow work in general. Not gonna skip it as I'm not skipping anything but if this came up on Shuffle All I think I would skip

see, now this is the kind of thing you couldn't accomplish in a home studio. Where would you fit everybody

lol yeah, though it's probably not as expensive as you think and you have something you want to record and make it sound great the option still exists.

But really my point is that all that collab still exists you just need to reach out and talk to people. There is an alternative version of that story where they worked in the same studio and never collaborated because they never talked. You have easier access to talk with other musicians and producers than they ever did. I don't think we really lost anything because now everyone can produce professional level music at home and has the ability to talk and collaborate with almost anyone through the Internet.

That's a fair point. I've never had much luck reaching out to people but I've had other people reach out to me a lot so maybe it's just a volume thing. Maybe I'll take another crack at it come my next project

I had no exposure to funk/soul growing up in a very, very white part of Pennsylvania so seriously if anyone has any other essential listens I'd love some recommendations. It's a huge blind spot in my musical knowledge and Wonder and Al Green are basically my only footholds in right now

I'm Still in Love with You is a loving great album...

Summer Soft is great. I know this is a v online thing to say but it reminds me of Childish Gambino's album "Awaken, My Love"; Glover was probably listening to this album a lot when writing that one

Ordinary Pain reminds me vaguely of this R&B song from 6 years later

Shirley Brewer's voice in the second half of Ordinary Pain is incredible

And I love the twist of the sweet intro verses being from a verified fuccboi to keep it from just being another unrequited love song.
