most of the women centered movie ideas during hollywoods last woke phase were so amazingly bad its an open question whether the people making the movies really were that stupid or if they were trying to tank the idea of women led blockbusters on purpose

the era where hollywood adaptations of nerd poo poo were all made with a strong sense of embarassment and shame at the source material kicked rear end

i dunno what's worse, when movies/tv depict americans not torturing people because of course we would never be evil or when they depict americans torturing people but its actually good because hard men must make hard choices or this jack ryan poo poo where they hint at torture and saintly knight jack ryan doesn't torture, he gives the guy food and water

like they depict the actual on-screen interrogation as them just yelling at a guy for hours, but they nod towards the idea that guys in other cells are getting their poo poo wrecked. jim from the office looks at a nearby guard with an expression of deep concern over this

by the time you get to poo poo thats ripping off tom clancy like 24 and the call of duty games they barely bother to explain why the torture is necessary. youre just supposed to see it and assume that the guy doing the torturing is a badass who is proving how morally good they are by showign what their willing to do

It's pretty much an open secret that Krasinski has been working with the CIA, most recently outed when Josh Olson, who wrote A History of Violence, mentioned on a podcast he does with Dave Anthony that he had a meeting with the CIA (because, honestly, even if you disagree with everything about the CIA, you kinda have to take that meeting just to see what it's like to meet a spook whose job it is to lasso in Hollywood for propaganda), and partway through the meeting, said spook tells him that they already have an actor on board for the stuff they've been discussing. Olson never mentions the guy's name, but Dave brings up the Jack Ryan show a few minutes later and Olson is like "oh, how'd you know?"

I mean it should have been a given once he did two CIA-boosting things back to back between 13 Hours and Jack Ryan, but I guess since both shows sank into the muck of "who cares" like every other piece of pop culture does these days, nobody really noticed

I wonder if Harrison Ford realized what he'd been a part of by doing those 90s Clancy movies and that's what has made him extra ornery in his old age.

lmao of course the best the CIA can get is office jim

I don't care for the idea that a director is the sole producer of art with regards to cinema and I think that dismissing the work of the actors and film crew is bullshit even if the ideas he is expressing are correct. I think the term art is bullshit in general because theres no objective way to define it with regards to this conversation because every loving film funded by a major corporation is intended to make a profit but that doesn't mean that the people working on them aren't trying to say something.

i disagree with the last tweet because the MCU defense force isn't saying "let people enjoy things." hell, that's what they like to say to other people as a way to shut down debate. the way i see it, they're saying some combination of "actually this children's cartoon comic book movie has important themes that only adults can get" and sweeping generalizations about how they're white male movies, so the very diverse comic book movies are better by default

first tweet is good though

they just switch between the two depending on what argument you make

In general, prestige TV and the meta-conversation breeds FOMO and a weird sense of alienation.

I still don't watch most shows that "everyone is talking about", but the FOMO effect turns me off a little from checking out TV shows that finished already.

I get the impression through osmosis that "the desired way" to consume the Game of Thrones show was to watch it at your hip friends' NYC apartment every week. If your consumption of a popular show isn't a social experience, you're doing it wrong.

I guess what I'm really saying is I can't wait for capitalism to end so pop culture as we know it ends.

GOT started as a thing that people actually liked but it was definitely just a cultural event by the end and it backfired really bad and nobody likes any of it anymore

saw the third episode of watchmen and i gotta admit it finally feels like it's starting to pick up. my theory so far about the events in ep 3 are the senator that asks laurie to go to tulsa has planned elements of the 7th calvary attack since the beginning, and even planned for the suicide bomber to make his appearance, betting that laurie would stop him and he'd be able to leverage it into incredible PR.

i also like that angela isn't intimidated by laurie at all, despite laurie's best efforts.

The supplemental material site has an extremely ominous letter written by Senator Keene Snr. to Crawford's dad that implies pretty much that, or maybe wants you to https://www.hbo.com/content/dam/hbodata/series/watchmen/peteypedia/03/four-letters-evidence.pdf. can't it be both? I don't think watchmen america is a full blown dictatorship, and nixon was already shown as pretty unpopular in the comic. the republicans got 30 years by winning vietnam but then everyone gradually got sick of them.
