Why does everyone hate Electronic Arts and loot crates? I love Loot Crates, surprise mechanics; whatever you call them. In fact, I've been buying them since '94. Must of us probably have. They're called Trading Card Booster packs, and if you've ever bought pokemon cards or Magic cards or Yugioh cards you've bought a loot crate. And it was fun.

Trading Card Booster also suck. The games were good, but they cost an extortionate amount of money to get the cards you wanted. I can kinda live with Living Card Games where you pay for an expansion pack and get all the cards in one go though.

It’s because most of you guys are probably millennials (cringe) who have had everything in life handed to them on a silver platter. Loot boxes aren’t like mommy and daddy who give you everything you want.

A number of reasons:

- It's completely unnecessary from a game developer's part to use paid-for loot boxes. You can have 'surprise mechanics' with any kind of randomly spawned loot. There is zero benefit to any player from lootbox mechanics, the only people who are benefiting are the people you're giving money to.

- The additional thrill of having spent real-life money on a loot box uses the same psychological exploits as gambling in a casino or buying lottery tickets. Gambling is known to be addictive to some people and lootbox mechanics are very consciously set up to exploit that to try and get people addicted (and in most cases, in those cases where you do 'win' when opening a lootbox, all you get is some digital doohicky that has artificial scarcity that the game developers can put in there at almost zero cost, rather than actual real world money that presents at least some financial risk to the casino). Gambling addiction is a crippling disorder and consciously trying to exploit is is scummy to the extreme.

- Game balance can actually be negatively impacted by lootbox mechanics, depending what's in the lootboxes and how they're implemented. If you give people the choice to either grind or spend money to earn their 'keys', you're liable to end up with a horribly grindy game that could have been much more streamlined. If you lock content behind lootboxes, then only those people willing to spend a randomly determined (and likely large) sum of money will actually be able to access said content. And if the lootboxes contain useable items, you give a gameplay advantage to those people who are willing to fork out more money, skewing things in favour of those who spend more.

And the reason I never played Magic: The Gathering or any similar trading card game is precisely because the above apply to those as well, which I consider to be unethical, money grubbing, and detrimental to game design and balance.

I personally would love it if every game that contained lootbox mechanics were officially branded as 'gambling' by law and would face the same sales restrictions as lottery tickets and casino visits.

10 dollars and plat is nothing to me, just like buying a loot box or 20 lootboxes is nothing for me. I love supporting game developers and I show them love by giving them money for lootboxes. Do you really not have an extra 10 dollars to give great corporations like EA or Blizzard as a little thank you each week? The lootbox is honestly secondary to me, because I just like supporting great talent.

No one is forcing you to buy lootboxes.

No, but they're actively making games less fun for the people who won't.
Not because they have to - because they choose to.

I'm all for replacing lootboxes with a 'Donate to EA' button that does just that.

I’ll take these in turn.

-The gamer absolutely wins when buying a lootbox regardless of what is inside because you’re giving money to people who work hard to keep your favorite game running. Maybe if the original star wars battlefront or everquest were smart enough to implement lootboxes their servers would still be up. Instead those companies get bought out by much better, smarter companies, ie EA.

-why is being addicted to gambling wrong but being addicted to a game without loot boxes good/healthier? I’m a big boy and can decide if I want to buy a lootbox or not.

-games can be balanced AROUND the lootbox.

Tolkien fanboys do not play games because it 'ruins his work' the other is to get the real ending you had to spend lots of money in loot crates for orcs to even have a chance to see it, its funny they decided that with the ability to not able to buy orcs they decided to make is easier

gambling has lots of restrictions on it that limit where it can be done, who can do it, and what sorts of gambling can be done, often because prior to those restrictions being put into place they were doing the same shady poo poo that game companies are doing right now.

I am so sick of these star wars
As long as lootboxes don't affect mechanics or progression I honestly don't give a poo poo about lootboxes but Battlefront 2's lootboxes were rear end.
Progression was pretty much spend credits and hope you get the card that gives you increased damage and health for your class and if you didn't have purple tier cards you'd be having one hell of a great time getting bumfucked over by whales.

Having the videogame industry design games around the concept of loot crates is cancer. Selling lootcrates to 7 year olds on their iphone with daddy's credit card is cancer. Fifa is like the top grossing game because of lootcrate player packs or whatever.

producers: Make a real loving game that doesn't rely on sapping people's money
consumers: please stop buying lootcrates you loving rubes

Some games are inherently about random chance, like magic such as you mentioned. They too tease out just how much fuckery they can pull before people stop buying. Top tier standard decks costing like 50-80 if you play that cheapass blue one owns. I had a standard deck valued at probably 300-400 and that is just dumb. That's why I stopped playing. Why bother spending that much? It was fun, though.

90% of magic cards become bulk rare when rotation hits, so you have to weight the cost/benefit over time. I think they did an analysis and said it's always best to buy individual cards if you know what deck you want rather than buying packs and hoping to get what you need or trade for what you need.

I got a box of the ultimate master's and my estimated value of the cards I got was more than the price I paid, but what if I didn't make that back?

Gambling will always be a thing and some people are irresponsible. Legit go watch the episode of south park with the terrance and phillip mobile game. It's great and explains the dangers of microtransactions.
