 So that dump off pass that wasn't caught made me think of a rules question.

If the QB passes laterally behind the los and for whatever reason the pass is too low, the intended receiver kicks it (instinct, accident) past the los.
As long as it's in the air, it could be caught and returned as an interception, same as a batted pass. But what if it hits the turf, again, past the los?

Now, I'd assume it's dead ball, but what's the difference between that and a really lovely punt that the defense could recover normally?
Imagine a botched punt snap that a blocker pitches back to a regular punter who barely gets the kick away?
What would the difference be?

Or is it a rule that the kicking player can be the only player to touch the ball after the snap?
