I just picked this up since it was on sale instead of cyberpunk 2077 and holy poo poo how did I not know of it beforehand? I'm a complete wreck of a person who's failed every check and just tried to avoid paying my drinking bill by launching myself backwards, flipping the double bird (Why... both hands?!) and crashing into a wheelchaired lady. also my name is ridiculously long and pretentious, i've lost my badge, the corpse is still hanging up, my face is trapped in a terrible rictus grin of attempted seduction and I only have one shoe.

I've been playing for ten minutes.

As I stand here, bonding with this inanimate mailbox and encouraging it to man the gently caress up while my partner looks on in bewilderment, I can only say:

gently caress yeah, this game rules.

I'm on day three and I spent a legitimate 20 minutes sitting around thinking about the consequences of which choice to make and having actual debate with myself about helping Evrat get his hands on the fishing village vs fudging it and screwing him, which seems like an easy choice until you're talking with the NPCs about how the village has no future, the kids there having nothing, how they might be driven out but this also might be the one shot at making something better, etc., etc.

I'm going pretty hard in on empathy and inland empire with a side of conceptualization so I'm pretty whacky but I've also managed to unlock some really touching dialogue trees.

Only time I've really savescummed was so I could 360 roundhouse kick Measurehead while screaming DISCO INFERNO despite having abysmal physical strength and no, I do not regret that. At all.

I'm having fun with the base game so I'll just keep playing it, and then spec differently on replay when the expac comes out I think. It's meant to have good replay value just by itself if you do things differently, right?

Finished day four.

tribunal went ... Uh. bunch of dead people, Klaasje and Ruby both free in the wind, got shot and no suspects now.

Is there any way to end with no deaths? I lost three Hardy boys and the three mercs + Kim concussed + detective shot in the leg.

Also I started the game bring super whacky but as I've grown more and more attached to Kim and his exhausted support of my idiocy I find myself becoming more sensible and Trying Harder about avoiding drugs and drink and acting sane, and I just unlocked normal copotype before the tribunal.. the mechanic almost became a "look, you're working on your batshit for friendship" gold star moment.

There is no way to do the Tribunal bloodlessly. You can only minimize the body count. It can end with less deaths then you experienced. The real question is, did you use the tie

Finished my first playthrough!

The cryptid was a surprise. Managed to recruit Kim to my department because we're bro's 4 lyfe and didn't have to turn in my badge since I solved the case and also got a photo of a cool cryptid. Definitely left some sidequests on the table for when the final cut comes out - I didn't pursue a date with Leliana for one, and I didn't sort out what was going on with Cuno and Cunoese, or explore my clear homoerotic thoughts re: the smoking man. Got called out for having completely incompatible liberal-communist-moralist beliefs cause of random poo poo I'd said.

However, I did unlock the pale mysteries, solve the mystery of the church and the 2mm hole, open a drug-free night-club, convince Plaisance of the curse of the former taxidermy store after getting her daughter inside and getting a sweet hat, meet the dice maker and get a cursed die and learn about the ex-wife via sleeping in the bunker. Plus I can reinforce Lena's marriage which is nice because she gave me that cool pen.

So uh, I adored this game, especially how it was all great writing and talking and socialising with no combat (like a visual novel almost, except with slightly more running around) and how fun the characters all are, are there other similar games that come to mind?

if anyone wants to post their favorite "fashion" moments screencaps I might draw a set of the detective in his best Looks. It's Christmas but I'm locked down alone so I'm going to conceptualise.

I don't like the new portraits, I definitely feel the old ones had more impact. I'm neutral on the voices - I never noticed any issues with the previous voices but I don't think I'm super attached to any of them except don't change the limbic system. Honestly I'm just excited for new questlines n stuff and I've been trying to convince my friends to buy it on discount so they can final cut cheaper.

It will be interesting to see how the devs react. I
can almost see them reacting the same way Devolver did with Hotline Miami 2, even if that means they don't appeal the decision and the game can no longer be sold here, which would be tragic.

Wait, poo poo. Does that impact steam and PC? I'm Australian.

I took a mix of options because I wanted good results in individual conversations and ended up getting called out in the game hard for my incompatible theories and centrist dithering.

Ok that’s pretty loving cool.

It definitely is a game that rewards you for really roleplaying a character and leaning into the concept hard, rather than treating it like a “pull each conversation option lever to get +1?romance without considering what your character is saying” type of RPG, and having both internal narration and npcs react to my cowardice approach and terrible “like me I have no principles” conversation dithering was hilarious.

I was actually kind of worried about this. Sounds like it really wants you to roleplay quite heavily in one direction or another rather than make people in game feel good/get what you want. Which I suppose is a message in itself?

E: At least it'll be different from most games I play where I just relentlessly lie to everyone so I can get my shiny loot.
.

It made the actual interactions feel way more rewarding IMO. Rather than it being like a trite “give gift, raise relationship bar” where you can simultaneously be a ruthless baby eater and an innocent saint to two different characters by choosing to be what they like, if you do that in this game the game itself kinda pushes you to take your detective more seriously as a character in himself with stances and a personality rather than an empty avatar doing incompatible acts for your goals. And I’m pretty sure if you choose to be a manipulative liar for loot that’s also a valid character personality, there’s the “Suggestion” skill tree which is all about being manipulative.

And I mean I had fun being a dithering moralist centrist anyway, the game definitely wasn’t unfun that way! If anything it was even more funny when an npc is like “somehow he’s both a left leaning communist and believes in the free market. No I don’t get it either.”

Man, I mean Rene dying is about as small a plot point as I can think of, given the utter insignificance of his role in the story. If you're firing up a new old game and skipping to page THREE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY of discussion about it on the forums, maybe there's some personal responsibility there if you get spoiled.

Hm, maybe his death had an outsized impact on my first play through compared to others? I felt like it was really a moment that cemented the themes of the game and how it was different. I came in with the attitude of the usual rpg - of course I’ll solve the mystery of their past relationship, of course if I choose the right dialogue options they’ll become better friends and give up the bad viewpoints, I’m the protagonist, and then the game spit on me (lovingly) with reality.

Oh! Check out the custom build option when starting is my advice. Not that you have to go with one, the defaults are fine, but click through to the custom option so you can actually examine all the skills and what they relate to and see if any appeal to you more and you can change to that.
