I really, really want to see reviews of this game to know if the gameplay is any good. It doesn't have to exactly be Dark Souls, but, if the combat and level design is decent I've been looking for the next Souls-like.

Game has been trending as a top seller on Steam for many days now.

this one looks to be no exception to that rule

m + kb worked quite well in dark souls 3

Shacknews really liked it, highly positive review: http://www.shacknews.com/article/114168/code-vein-review-take-my-blood

They go all-in on puns to end the review:

“Code Vein reads from the grimoire and elegantly adds its own incantations, bringing to the genre a fresh perspective and a lust for blood. Code Vein begs to be devoured. It’s got enough blood in its veins and marrow in its bones to satisfy even the most ravenous of players. If you’re looking for a unique Soulsborne experience, this is it.”

Other post embargo reviews?

The wcftech review compared it to a new take on dragon's dogma, which was a game that really owned. I think this game will be pretty interesting.

The character creator is crazy detailed and deep.

char creator owns, PC controls are good, combat is fun, coop works on steam

not much more else to say, if you like Souls games this is worth a buy. I'll post screens another day.

Any souls like is easy if you overlevel/overgear enough, and we’ve all got gud compared to DkS1. This game is a little different, definitely fun, and worth taking it at your own pace.

I read that if you overlevel for an area, you can't master gifts there anymore. Anyone know what the recommended level ranges are for each area?

are Davis's Ichor Blend and the similar (named) items you can exchange for permanent increases to your ichor max, or temporary buffs?

I haven't done boss #2 yet, spent so much time farming in den to master all the different codes' gifts. got a lot of queen iron and old world stuff along the way

The Atomic Man-Boy posted:

Hows the level design? I'm leaning towards getting this game, cuz it's like dark souls with the ability to endlessly customize builds and waifus, but every time i look at the levels and scenery, they look pretty uninspired.

in the first 3 areas, it's like a blend of going through a skyrim dungeon and a dark souls area. enemy variety and exploration is decent enough. scenery is varied and there's some nice visuals; also some (more rare) boring hallways.

you're really here for the graphics, coop, boss fights, cutscenes, and character customization (both in fashion, and in skills/gear). it is a fun game, I am happy with the buy.

I think the single thing that annoys me most about this game is that I have to repeatedly click 'search for distress signals' to try and help someone else in coop.

Just let me queue up or click on ground marks like in DkS.

how are pc controls and how is multi-player

both are good. coop multiplayer is similar to dark souls but a little rougher around the edges for joining people's games (different interface, go to menu to call or join). you can rebind whatever keys and kb+m play works well.

I just reached Cathedral and the Flood depths and I am having a little trouble in big group fights. What character / upgrade level were you all for the biggest fights in those areas?

I’m currently lvl 20, +3, feels a bit squishy. Also my AI partner dies in big fights, do they just scale to your levels?

Turns out this level question was answered on gamefaqs, someone else had the same question

Rough guide is 10 levels gained per zone

I cleared that boss at level 20. Spent a ton of souls on buying all possible gifts (skills) and upgrading various gear items.

This is the truth. It'll just randomly jet you out to help someone in the area you're in. Regardless of what you have or haven't done.

this is exactly how dark souls coop worked, you could be summoned in to help someone who ends up doing the boss before you have in that zone. it’s a useful thing to learn the boss fight before risking it yourself.

the difference is that in souls you have to interact with a ground marker so you’d see a complete route to boss, while here you can be at start of zone and summoned to end fog wall.

Game was good, well worth the time. Great Souls-lite experience.
