Thomas Heaton makes some really nice videos, but I can't get into the pictures he takes. Going through his portfolio he's got some high quality stuff, so maybe it's more the reality of wanting to make weekly videos.. the images aren't all going to be zingers. But I'd still like to see more consistency.

But watching him turned me on to Adam Gibbs, who seems to produce gold every time. In contrast to Heaton he's not as good a videographer, his videos rely a bit too much on drone footage (which is pretty, I just don't need 5 minutes of it) and it jumps around a lot more, but the photos make me jealous every time.

I mean, look at what he gets out of some rocks in a river gorge:

Chur, binge-watching all of these, I think they've already helped me out a bit.

I've found a few videos I've really liked on the B&H youtube channel under their 'event space'

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA2A7966A44E77011

They're typically very long videos (>1 hour each) and are recordings of live presentations so can be hit and miss, but one of them inspired me to get into large format photography and I'm loving it so thought it was worth a plug.

Nick Carver is great. He doesn't upload super often but he does well in front of a camera and is open when stuff doesn't go right.

He also knows his poo poo so there's something to learn too, especially if you're in to film.

There's something about his accent... as a non-American it really irks me, it feels like he's putting it on rather than it being how he would always speak.

:wrong:

They want more people to shoot raw so that more people shoot raw so they can feel superior to the ... now smaller amount of people that shoot JPEGs???

I see what he’s saying but he’s saying it badly.

Also, neither raw nor jpeg is ‘correct’. They are different tools for different scenarios. Landscape photogs need raw and lots of people from beginners to pros will be perfectly happy with the amazing film simulations that are available these days.

I personally shoot raw cos I want a slammed blacks grainy mess which I appreciate is not a common need that’s gonna end up in a camera film simulation and that’s fine.

Also, loads of people shoot RAW + jpeg simultaneously.

Not everything needs to be so ... black and white :rimshot:

Real big dick playas shoot film anyway.

Mat Marrash - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCta-8f4Qj-jzPb61Ua8D_6Q - large format photographer. He goes shooting LF every week. Unfortunately the only thing he seems to like to shoot are boring pictures of trees.

Lmao Mat Marrash has only commented on one photo of mine on Flickr and it was a boring large format tree photo.

Has no one linked Ben Horne yet? Really admire the folks like him and Nick Carver that not only carry big heavy cameras and sheet film out, but go through the headache of filming it too.

Used to watch his videos a fair bit. Love the commitment to not only shooting 8x10 but also doing it with slide film. I only use a 4x5 camera and even then when I go hiking with it just the camera and stuff I need to use it is well more than 50% of my pack weight for a 2 or 3 day trip (although I guess Ben typically stages out of his car doing day-hikes).
