I love watching Youtube photography channels for inspiration.

Let's discuss and discover each other's faves.

Nick Carver

Landscape film medium format stuff. Lots of decaying structures and fading americana. Talks you through the whole shoot. Top notch though videos aren't very frequent.

Thomas Heaton

British landscape guy with more of a focus on camping and going on an adventure in the outdoors. Good discussions about composition in his videos.

Art of Photography

More gear focused these days (sigh) but awesome videos in the back catalogue focussing on individual photographers. This video introduced me to Fan Ho, now one of my favourite photographers.

Frederik Trovatten

Danish guy living in Mexico City. Great street portraits and a good source of inspiration if you feel too shy to ask to take people's photos.

Gareth Danks

Love this guy's positive outlook on street photography. He's a landscape photog mainly so you sort of learn along with him when he does street stuff.

Sean Tucker

A lot of his videos focus on the philosophy of photography. Great teacher and presentation style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94Ji1R-ZkKE

This is a video by Sean about his friend, a travel and portrait photographer which I found particularly inspiring.

John Free

Great perspectives from a guy that's been shooting street for decades. Something he said that's stuck with me: "there's practice in golf, in dancing, in basketball [...] so why is there no practice in photography?"

Was gonna post about this guy today. Been enjoying his videos a lot even though I don’t shoot film. I am now convinced that ‘the medium format look’ is a thing cos he showed some of his Xpro2 shots vs his medium format stuff and the medium format looks incredible whereas the Fuji digital stuff looks bland. Even of the same subject shot at the same focal length.

Now I’m gassing for a Hasselblad 500CM :homebrew:

plus for some reason the way he says "make photos" drives me mad.

Eric Kim says “can I make a portrait of you” in his videos and is one of the many reasons he irritates me.

I do love Kai but I liked the Digital Rev days more than what he does now. Lok is the best obs.

I think in general a lot of phototube just bangs on about video now because photo tech has got so good there isn’t much to say. Personally I don’t care about video at all. Except when it’s Camera Conspiracies. Then I will watch every single video.

I hate that I get both intrigued and mortified when I see that he's posted a new video.

He is an absolute oddball that somehow can’t fathom how he never gets loaned any gear BUT in a sea of absolute inauthenticity he is ‘real’ and very watchable because of it. Also man does he know a lot about photography.

He’s a bit of a remnant of the ‘old’ internet when it was just unglamorous nerds banging on about nerd stuff. I’m not surprised us goons have a soft spot for him.

While we’re slagging people off, I can’t stand Fro. Used to be a subscriber but his condescending tone really pissed me off and the endless shilling of his FroVault software or whatever it was called that basically just saves a list of gear serial numbers.

Edit: here’s Camera Conspiracies ripping on Tony. Good times

I like the thumbs up, thumbs down if ... Actually that might just be on his other channel. Love me some camera conspiracies though he’ll probably unfortunately kill himself with a new weird diet soon. I mean, he drank turpentine IIRC.

Incoming hot take from goon fave Eric Kim.

https://erickimphotography.com/blog/2020/03/19/raw-is-for-suckers/

quote:

Photography nerds want to flex their superiority over newbies (who don’t know how to shoot and process RAW files), thus they want everyone to shoot RAW in order to feel superior to more people.

:wrong:

They want more people to shoot raw so that more people shoot raw so they can feel superior to the ... now smaller amount of people that shoot JPEGs???

I see what he’s saying but he’s saying it badly.

Also, neither raw nor jpeg is ‘correct’. They are different tools for different scenarios. Landscape photogs need raw and lots of people from beginners to pros will be perfectly happy with the amazing film simulations that are available these days.

I personally shoot raw cos I want a slammed blacks grainy mess which I appreciate is not a common need that’s gonna end up in a camera film simulation and that’s fine.

Also, loads of people shoot RAW + jpeg simultaneously.

Not everything needs to be so ... black and white :rimshot:

Enjoy this latest blog post from thread favourite Eric Kim. I have reproduced his Very Deep Thoughts (tm) in full below as he has managed to squeeze his grand theory into a mere 25 words.

Eric Kim posted:

A new future:

"Either you’re free or a slave."

And let us not be fooled; even the rich can be slaves (many of whom are).

Is he quoting himself???
