I had to read Gideon the Ninth after you jerks went full spoiler blackout for like, 2 straight pages. It was really great! The writing took a little bit to get used to, and I'm pretty sure I got lost during the necro-fights, but it was entertaining and I look forward to the sequel.

a foolish pianist posted:It's not the 'just woke up in a strange body and looking at it' bit - it's the 'just woke up in a strange body and checking it for hotness cuz ladies really only care how hot they look, right?' bit. I mean I get that the details there are weird, but man or woman if you wake up in a strange body aren't you going to check yourself out?

I dunno, as far as bad puns go I kind of enjoy it. I don't want to read a book FULL of them, but one or two sprinkled in can be fun.

I did grow up on Xanth novels though, so I'm probably coming at the pun from a traumatized place.

Drakyn posted:At the realization that their defense of the Imperial Order's brutality would actually result in consequences to themselves, the crowd began scattering in fright, screaming curses back at Richard and his men. Oh god that's from book 8 isn't it. I have never read a book in my entire life that was more boot-strappy. Richard was for some reason a peasant but took a second job and invested wisely and becomes a superman again all through his own power. Inspirational stuff.

Drakyn posted:No, you're thinking of Faith of the Fallen drat, my memory is terrible, and I have no plans to go back and reinforce it. I really should have stopped in the first book where his dominatrix/torturer falls in love with him, but, what can I say apparently I like bad porny books. Unrelatedly the third Baru is very good so far! (I think it's unrelated I haven't finished it yet.)

Copernic posted:I read this and do not recommend it. It is in fact an exact recapitulation of the greatest hits in the Sherlock canon, except that Holmes and Watson and a few others have a slight occult gloss. And I do mean EXACT -- it goes beat by beat through Hound of the Baskervilles including the same supporting characters with the same names. She made Sherlock less interesting by taking out his explosive, depressive side and making him into an ethereal but mild-mannered angel. That's too bad, I really enjoyed Goblin Emperor. Somewhere in the Goodreads description they mention that it started as 'wingfic', fan fiction where a character is given wings. Not a genre I knew existed.

I'm glad your back and I'm sorry things suck right now and I hope they will be better. I do want to thank you for the '400 page novella' thing because it tickles me every single time I see it and there's not a lot of joy in small things lately so thanks.
