The precinct novels by Kieth Candido are pretty good. Fantasy csi/detective stories are my jam. Has a bi lead if you just gotta know about a character's sex life. Not really brought up often.

There's a new series called 5th Ward by Dale Lucas that's pretty good. It's also fantasy detective/investigation stuff.

I think Glen Cook wrote a fantasy detective series as well, can't recall it offhand, had metal in the names of the book like cold copper tears or something like that.

The copper cat stores is pretty good as well. Not really a detective series but a decent fantasy series.

The god fragments series by Tom Lloyd is pretty good also.

The Last Policeman was pretty good, but was in no way an upbeat book. Was honestly surprised at how well the story came together.

you might want to check out Rachel Aaron's Legend of Eli Monpress (5 books + 1 prequel novella; fun as hell but not particularly queer)

Yea, there's not anything really queer going on in the series but it is a really good fantasy one. It's one of the few you can say PLEASE DO NOT JUDGE THIS BY THE COVER because for some reason the first few covers look like some weird romance novel, when it's really not. Like, exceptionally not.

Didn't he write a book where some gay warrior guy ends up getting his nephew or something killed because he volunteered to fight in his place, and then ended up loving an elf or something and it turns out that in elf land time passes WAY FASTER so a night for him was like a week for normal people?

The Copper Cat trilogy has a gay protag. He gets romanced in the books, but it's nothing like, horrendously graphic and badly written. Just dudes who like dudes.

I actually felt kinda weird about it, because the main protag is a chick who really doesn't hook up with anyone and the third protag is a guy who starts out as a pain in the rear end and ends up being not a pain in the rear end as much, but also not balls deep in the female protag (which is kinda rare for the fantasy genre in general). At least I don't think he does, I haven't read the books in a while.

There's no rape (that I can remember anyway) in the Esthar series. Other than the feeling of "gently caress, I bought this piece of poo poo" for the dragon's blood book and the one about the chick with the feathers. The rest are all pretty great. Those 2 are just, bad.

Put it this way, I'd recommend him in the same sentence as Pratchett to the same people, if we are talking about just the esthar series. I haven't read his other stuff.

There wasn't much small girl being all kissy controlling old men in the belgariad or malloreon. There is a princess, but she was actually more commanding (literally, eventually) and whatnot than all girly hair and ponies and love.

That was mostly in the other series he did.
Kinda weird in retrospect but I still laughed when she confused the poo poo out of the troll gods by kissing one.

The first book was decent, and had a hell of a cliffhanger. I thought it was gonna be a bangin new sci fi series. Then I tried to read the second one and yea, it was a combination of a sad trombone noise and a fart.

I liked the idea of "nanoplague destroys all plastics and metals, what happens to civilization? DUHN DUHN DUUUUNNNNN" as a plot, but then it kinda meandered into just dumb poo poo.

Honestly I was hoping for aliens to show up.

Dunno who'd be interested in knowning, but if you are a Crowley fan, James A Moore has put out 2 books recently that has him in there and gives a bit more of his backstory. Boomtown and Where The Sun Goes To Die. Both are pretty good. Western fantasy, I guess, since you can't really call miners and horse thieves and whatnot "urban".

I'm really enjoying the character of Slate. He makes a nice addition to the character of Crowley.

Those are still in my TBR list.

Just finished up The Sleep Experiment by Jeremy Bates, and while it was ok, it wasn't fantastic. I dunno, I just had high hopes since it's one of my favorite creepypastas out there. All in all not really much horror or action until like the last 20 pages of the book. I'd rank it firmly a 3 star. Not bad, not great, but readable.

Weird, and has a decent take on the whole sleep experiment outcome and reasons, but still just not that terrific of a read.

He's got some "WORLD'S SCARIEST" something or other books, like places? I think, where it's about campers at that russian mountain pass, or the japanese haunted suicide forest. Oh yea, the island of the doll heads as well. Might give one of those a shot to see if the action kicks off a bit faster.

Currently reading Mythical : Stone Soldier by C.E. Martin. It's not fantastic but it's kinda... sort of like David Conyers' Harrison Peel series meets The Arcadian series by Greig Beck. Only about a third of the way into the book and he's already zapped a kid in the head with a tazer to take out a telepath, so it's at least entertaining.

Currently reading Steel Frame and it's entertaining and weird, but I was kinda sad at the introduction of I GUESS BIG OL PLOT SPOILERS space robot zombies.

Went from being maybe weird sci-fi to weird sci-fi and maybe horror, and that's rarely done well in books.

Keeping my fingers crossed though.

I consider romance (or porn books) as chick books, but that's just me.

Edit - Not saying that dude's can't read em, just saying the audience for something like 50 shades is gonna be a lot more female oriented than the audience for something like space opera.

New Joe ledger book is pretty good. Finished it up and was impressed. It's always nice when the star of the book actually has to deal with the repercussions of getting beat up or shot or blown up. It's why the old series was one of my favorites. The first book in the new series is pretty good. Rage by Jonathan Maberry.

I haven't read the directive 51 book in a long time, but I did like the "Oh gently caress, the world is ending" and it actually WAS pretty well hosed.

I didn't continue past it though, cause it was just kinda lamely comical in parts that should have been played for seriousness.

Was a neat idea for an apocalypse though. Grey Goo but instead of making, well, goo, it just eats all the electronics and rubber stuff.

Don't remember those. Were they in the sequel books? It's been years since I read the first one though, so there's probably a lot I don't remember.

Edit - The only thing that I remember was some scene towards the end where the genius guy who had implants and whatnot to live ended up getting infected with the plague so his girlfriend had to shave all the hair off her body to visit him in whatever isolation ward he was in.

There's a 50% chance I'm getting that wrong, but it was one of the weirder moments in the book, besides the evil bad guys calling some dude's girlfriend a cocksucker before blowing up a big nuke bomb on a boat, but it was made with GOLD! so it was way ~weirder~ and therefore somehow plot relevant.

Long shot, but does anyone remember an urban fantasy novel that had Samson from the bible show up in it? I think he was leading a biker gang called Sons of Samson or something like that.

I thought it might be the nightside series, or even the drood series, but nope.

It's definitely an ebook, and was something I've read in the last 10 years or so. More than likely part of a series. I don't think they were the main characters or anything, just like, cameo appearances... but I can't be 100% sure.

Friend got it, was the Remy Chandler series, he showed up in a book somewhere in it.
