General Dog posted:Recruiting/philosophical question- with USC and Oregon down (compared with what we're used to seeing), and UCLA even worse than normal, where exactly is all of California's abundant talent going? Oregon is down W/L-wise (although it appears to be trending up now) but they're actually pulling the best recruiting classes in school history these past few years. Along with UW, they're pulling a lot of SoCal talent that would otherwise be USC locks. Otherwise, a lot are going to the SEC (LSU, UGA, and Tenn have gotten a few of the top west coast recruits recently). When 5* CB Chris Steele committed to Florida (before leaving for Oregon, then USC), he said a big reason why he did so was because of officiating in the SEC compared to the Pac-12. Besides that, the perception is that SEC coaches are developing players better (especially on defense) and giving them a better chance at the NFL. And really, the talent level is trending down on the west coast with fewer kids playing. You see some transfer to IMG or whatever the one CA league that's actually competitive (Mater Dei, John Bosco, etc.) just to get noticed and ranked higher. edit - just checked out the Banner Society article, it's mostly about the lack of big, highly rated D-lineman. They don't seem to have come to a clear conclusion on the reason behind it, but pose some interesting possibilities. https://www.bannersociety.com/2019/10/2/20895016/pac-12-recruiting-california-defensive-linemen dphi fucked around with this message at 00:30 on Oct 8, 2019 |

Nissin Cup Nudist posted:This is something recruits consider? I know Pac refs are bad, but SEC refs are not much better I don't know how prevalent it is, but I imagine it's part of the general feeling kids have with the conference. I watch a lot more Pac-12 games than SEC so I couldn't say how real it is, but I've definitely heard more than a few comments like "Well, you might get away with that in the SEC.." from announcers when DPI is called. https://twitter.com/AndrewNemec/status/1081644001634054144
