My kid saved up the money for a Quest 2 and I was thinking of bumping them up to a Quest 3 since it's coming out, but drat it's like twice the price. I'm in Canada so I don't have as many options for purchase locations. I've got Best Buy (I'm told bad return policy), Amazon, Newegg ($15 gift card!) and I guess Meta itself. I guess Newegg comes out slightly ahead there, anything wrong with them? And then how important is 512GB, which bumps the price up to about 3 used Quest 2s? Maybe I'm just talking myself into going for the Quest 2, not really sure how to value the differences. Also don't worry, I'll strictly limit the time my kid can use it so that he doesn't get cyber psychosis. He's been doing work and saving for more than a year though so I feel like I gotta let him have some VR.

Cool, sounds like the 512GB isn't really a requirement at least.

Got the Quest 3. After working out my networking the wireless link works all the way from my home office to my living room without any perceptible issues, so that's pretty good. How do these referral codes work, did I screw up by already setting up my device? I'd use one for Beat Saber.

Turin Turambar posted:So, there are two types of referrals. Device referrals, where someone refer you so you buy a Quest device, it gives both you and the person who gave you the link 30€/S in their store. You screwed it up by setting up your device with your account, yep. Too late. Turns out there's a way to still get the money referral. I followed the instructions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MetaReferrals/comments/175sygy/meta_quest_3_claim_referral_after_setting_up/ and now I'm living it up with my free copy of Beat Saber.

I hadn't felt sick playing anything, even janky VR like Hitman 3. Bonelab finally broke me and after 30 minutes I felt like I was going to hurl.

I just realized that Bonelab was supposed to have an intense intro with me hanging myself. For some reason it always just starts with me falling. Anyone know what the deal is? When I search it all I find is people who found the intro too disturbing and wanted to skip it, but it seems I can't' not skip it. The game also makes you delete and reinstall to start over which kind of sucks.

Opinionated posted:I possibly have a copy that's older and it still had the rope hanging part. I read that it got removed somewhere. Ah, I see now it was just removed. Darn it I wanted to kill myself in VR.

The Bonelab thing bugs me more than the Superhot one because without it you're missing a chunk of story. Also they could have just taken out the putting the noose around your own neck part and left the rest since it looks like it's other people killing you anyway. Anyway I gave up on it and and am playing Half Life Alyx, which so far lives up to expectations. Funny enough I find the Combine are made a lot scarier than the zombies in VR. There's just something about them getting up in your face that's unsettling.

I will say the zombie gore got to me a lot more in VR. When I saw dismembered bodies lying around I thought holy poo poo, how can they put this in a videogame? I'm looking at a mutilated dead body here! Then I realized it's the same thing you'd see in vanilla HL (or pretty much any monster FPS) that I would just pass by without much notice. Things just hit different in VR.

On the one hand it sucks the Valve doesn't care about VR since they made possibly the best VR game. And I don't care about handhelds of any sort. It is kind of a relief that I won't get buyers remorse for my Quest 3 though.

True! I forgot about that. I think I'm almost through Alyx now and have downloaded all the HL2 VR mods. I'm sure they'll be a step back but it'll be interesting to see how they compare.

I'm playing on a 6800XT and haven't had any issues. The most taxing game I've played on it is Half Life Alyx so maybe I'll encounter them later. I've also played Dirt Rally 2, Hitman 3 and Super Hot without issue.

I'm loving Into the Radius with one exception - their simple inverse kinematics are apparently the opposite of the way my body moves. Every time I try to place something in my belt it starts twisting away from me. Kneeling always places my body in front of me in a weird way. They seem to expect a straight back kneel, but I kneel hunched forward which I think is a far more natural way to kneel when scrounging around. Also just in general when games give me a full body the shoulders seem messed up and the elbows seem to be back by the shoulders. I tried changing height and arm length. I get the same thing in Hitman as well. Nice Van My Man fucked around with this message at 01:27 on Dec 8, 2023 |

The Steamlink VR foveated rendering is annoying as gently caress in a Quest 3 and there's no way to turn it off. Back to Virtual Desktop for me!

I also had an issue with the Quest 3 right hand controller that went away when I took the battery out and put it back in. Haven't had it since I switch to rechargeables. It worried me at the time but I completely forgot about it until hearings so many people had the same experience.

The Quest 3 does so much logging and uploading that I wouldn't dare watch porn on it because it will probably tell my whole family, post it to Facebook, and send a notification to Mark Zuckerberg.

I tried the UEVR injector on my kid's Poppy Playtime games and they're scary as gently caress. Most scared I've been in VR yet, and I didn't find the games to be particularly scary on a screen. The injector works pretty well for a quick and dirty VR mod.

Thoom posted:My favorite part of the Jeff chapter (and maybe my favorite part of any VR game) is the little moment when you're hunting for batteries and you open a cabinet to grab one, but the shelf is tilted and a wine bottle starts slowly rolling down and you have to grab it before it smashes and alerts Jeff. I don't know that I've ever seen a more organic/natural set piece than that. When I got to that cabinet I knew those mfers were going to try that and already had my hand out to grab the bottle before I opened the door. I was proud of my foresight when the bottle started rolling out. Also does anyone know how I can map the touch controllers to keyboard and mouse buttons to play games on Steam? I thought I could do it through Steam but it has a completely different and less useful control mapping interface for VR it seems.

Is there any reason to play it over link instead of on the Quest 3 natively? Maybe it'll be easier to mod? I've been meaning to do that.
