Ok, so I put a couple of hours in, it's pretty good. It's basically Freelancer, but weirder. Controls and basic gameplay is exactly the same - I'm playing kb&m and it's pretty smooth - you fly around as a fighter or freighter, dogfight, trade, fly along spacelanes, explore nebulas, loot shipwrecks etc. There's some additional mechanics, biggest is probably that all around the galaxy those storms can pop up that spill out magic and chaos, and you can go in to fight some kind of boss enemy to close it. First campaign mission had me killing a space serpent, with giant tentacles fading in and out of existence in the background. There's also rudimentary crafting, the ships seem to have a couple more systems to upgrade than Freelancer. Eventually it seems you'll be able to fly with up to 4 AI-controlled wingmen? Visually it's going for an early-2000's look. If you played Trainwiz's Morrowind mods, it kinda looks like Morrowind in space. The lore is also appropriately weird, there's multiple strange alien species and even the settings humans have weird things going on. One thing that's annoying me right now is that the default music when travelling the lanes is kinda annoying. Sound like it belongs in a Zelda game. Hopefully it will get changed, a lot of people are complaining about it. But if you go off the main routes the ambience is pretty atmospheric.
