and there's a monster chase that feels like bloober team got bored of the story they were building or thought "well, it's a horror game so we gotta have one i guess!". that's about 3-4 hours in that i've watched

their critique seems to be that a time loop game involves trial and error and a complicated series of ever expanding steps to complete the story... which makes me wonder if they played Outer Wilds beyond the first hour

The 7th Guest
Dec 17, 2003

Thoom posted:

I think a relevant difference with Outer Wilds might be that (vague mechanical spoilers for Outer Wilds -- I haven't played 12 Minutes yet) in Outer Wilds, you have almost no ability to affect the world or the outcome of anything. If you need to see something at minute 18 of the timeloop, you can fast-forward by the campfire at the start until minute 17 and then hustle over to where you need to be, whereas 12 Minutes is more reactive, and so if you decide you made a mistake 10 minutes in, you presumably have to painstakingly recreate the first 10 minutes of your activity on the next loop, otherwise something you did differently might invalidate the change you're trying to make.
For what it's worth, having finished the game, time is relatively flexible in the 12 Minutes loops.. you can speed up time to when the cop shows up, your character goes from needing to prove the time loop via pointing out things in the room through interactions to just doing it via a couple of dialog boxes, etc. But it's still inefficient. The PC Gamer review is accurate, although it didn't bother me that much so much as the end result of the story leaving me feeling kinda empty.

I actually loved the game fully, with the exception of the map being terrible. Kitaria is major 6-7 out of 10 energy from what I've played, purely for niche players and very focused on resource farming. I do like the PS2/PSP-era look of it though.

The next batch of big releases starts tomorrow: The Artful Escape, Tales of Arise, Life is Strange: True Colors, Webbed, and Dice Legacy.

There was also F.I.S.T. but it did not release on PC yet, only console for now. PC port is coming though.

I liked the demo but the thing that concerned me about it was the amount of content so I'll see if my fears were founded or not

e: apparently review copies had incomplete translations and that seems to definitely be affecting people's perception of it, as lore is kind of important in mystery fiction and apparently a lot of codex stuff was untranslated. also it apparently eschews mysteries in the final couple of chapters and instead goes at breakneck pace through a bunch of places with no detectiving. that's good info to have when considering buying it. but 10-15 hours sounds fine to me at least. $30 is a bit pricey for a game that is a mixed bag though.

The original Aragami was all about stealth. If an enemy spotted you, you might be able to run away, but trying to fight them was pretty much guaranteed to be a losing proposition. That made it kinda niche and frustrating for everyone else, so they tried to bring in more combat in the sequel. I'm not surprised that they missed a little bit, but I'm also not sure what else they could've done to not just make the sequel more of the same.
it actually made me more interested because it seemed like they were taking a bit from sekiro for the combat so you still had to be very good

I just hope that the sameness of the levels has been improved upon in the sequel because the first game's levels, thematically, mostly looked the same. there were a couple of interior levels that were neat, but yeah, even some palette adjustments would've been nice

It went from unplayable to an amazing recommendation. The main problem before was that a lot of the puzzle solving/traversal stuff counted as weapons, which meant that you constantly had to go into the menu to change equipment. Thankfully they've added equipment loadouts which can be switched on the fly. It's a genuinely great Metroidvania that seems to have been overlooked.
That's pretty good, I think I'd still prefer a button or radial menu or something for the guns but at least loadouts is a step in the right direction.
