My roommate just asked if I ever found out who the mysterious hunter from Chapter 1 was. I remember the event but not what he looked like. Anyone know who he was? EDIT: I really wanna say it was Rutger because it was Chapter 1, but I'm not entirely certain Rabbi Raccoon fucked around with this message at 07:52 on Nov 15, 2019 |

I think my mind just washed over all teehees until I finally noticed.

Playing CSIII & IV in Japanese made me realise how much I took XSEED for granted. The scripts are so bad.

The Cold Steel games just have very stiff scripts that constantly repeat themselves, and for games that are dozens of hours long that becomes very grating very fast.

They have, but I didn't know jaeger meant that. Neat little nod, though. I just wasn't completely sure since that first scene is all of 30 seconds and I legitimately could not remember what he looked like. He must have been wearing a different outfit, too.

I feel bad that someone probably spent a long time making flashy s-crafts for all the bosses and then the combat system encourages you to never see any of them because they will likely wipe your party.

It's why I always put the Sophia/Angel Master quartz on somebody in my main party, so I have an excuse to show off enemy S-Craft while I'm streaming. Or Altina's Order. Or cast Adamantine Shield, there are at least ways to prevent an SCraft from caving your poo poo in in this game.

Oh there are ways around it, I liked the Sophia quartz and the accessory which gives +9999 HP but I tended to focus on killing enemy bosses before they could fire them off. Although I did lose to Aurelia in the fight against her and Victor when my attack left the boss with what must have been double digit HP and I took an s-craft unprepared.

I literally didn't see any s-crafts in the final chapter. doing juna's order and rean's arcane gale to break and then using kurt's to get many turns breaks the game all the way. I had more trouble with some of the big enemies in the final dungeon because I fought then like regular foes and some of then get stupid hard when they are low on health.

I'm playing this game slow as molasses so I only just beat chapter 2. Some thoughts: - machias S craft is hilarious and he's moved up several tiers with "you failed your inspection" (pretty sure it was different in CS2. who knows, i never used him) - as someone who did not play the crossbell games this feels like the chapter where that has the most impact, since the majority of the NPCs and moments are clearly "remember THIS person/thing?" i could also say the same about chapter 1 and its relationship to the Sky games (although nowhere near as heavy). interested to see how things go from here now that the game is probably moving away from familiar territory. - Olivier!

I beat it! and it only took me about 95 hours! One day Rean you will finish a game with a happy ending. But that game is not this one. Play time is the most ogre it's ever been. Stelas posted:(ending spoilers) Cedric seems to have gone into a full on darwinism dude who thinks friends are for chumps judging by one of his reactions to class 7 caring each other. An intense reaction to being stuck inside the cursed murderbot or a more natural one to his helplessness in the civil war maybe. Also he grew like a solid 10 or 12 inches in a year? I guess he's just on the Osborne train because of how in control he is? I dunno. Minor side note, Lechter what exactly is your idea of atonement that your riding along with this manufactured massacre as an excuse to start a war?

Lechter is a crazy moron who's guilt tripping himself over not saying anything when he was like five. Granted, it seems to be implied Obsorne's plan is to unleash the curse and reassemble the Sept-Terrion so it can be destroyed and deal with the curse permanently. So Lechter is likely going along with it due to his guilt latching onto the first possible way to get rid of the curse and absolve his dad. Cedric is definitely traumatized as gently caress from Devil Gundam and trying to reassert control over his life after being used as a literal puppet in the civil war in the worst way possible

Something that I'm glad they didn't bring back from 2 was needing to get a boss to a certain health percentage within a set number of turns in order to get bonus ap. Maybe that would have been easier in this game using orders but I remember getting so frustrated having to fight Xeno and Leo a bunch of times in order to make that happen.

Almost finished with the game (pretty sure I saved immediately before the start of the final fight) and some thoughts. - Gameplay is still good, and still easy as hell to break in half. If you ever get bored of sledgehammer/windblade, just equip musse with every thing that shortens the cast of water arts (including the master quartz in the main slot), give her the "regain EP from arts" as her sub, and give her an EP cut or whatever, and spam your highest-power water art. That's been around for the whole series but with Divine Song it absolutely trivializes everything. If you have 4 BP ready to go, most bosses will never get an attack in. If the EP still isn't working, just link her with someone with auto-charge like Machias. I also really enjoy the "100% dodge, does a fuckton of damage on counter-attacks" nonsense. It's too fair for how bosses work in 3 though. - Wow, this localization sucks. At this point I never want to hear the phrase "half a year" ever again. For the love of god, someone say "six months" for once in your goddamned life. There's plenty of other stuff y'all have already called out. The game is also riddled with typos. Outside of dialogue, there's stuff like the one item that gives you "ADV" (ADF). The most egregious thing is that at least one tooltip is wrong. One of the accessories that says it gives you 5% evasion actually gives 10%. I don't doubt for a minute there are other errors like that, that one is just super easy to notice. I wasn't exactly keeping a list of this stuff. Also, all of the trailing sentence fragments are obnoxious. A lot of the time it's the whole "someone else is finishing the first person's sentence," which kind of just doesn't work great with how long the gap between voice lines is, but not always. Sometimes there's no context given, ever. Some conversations are absolutely incomprehensible. Quite often there will be characters who you're talking to for the first time (especially minor NPCs) who make it sound like you've been talking to them for the past hour. It's miserable. This is just the poo poo I can think of off the top of my head. For the love of god, give the series back to xseed. - The bad loc is saved by the VA performances still being excellent. It really saves an otherwise awful script. Juna's VA in particular is really standout, especially during chapter 2. - Juna is a fantastic addition to the series. Whoever said that she reminds them of Estelle hit the nail on the head. The rest of the new class VII somewhat grew on me over time, but they're definitely not as interesting overall. Late-game spoiler stuff: - The Schera teases were cool upfront but then it became obnoxious that she was doing all this cool stuff off-screen. Kind of felt like they intended for her to have an actual appearance in the game but her content got cut so that they could ship the game. The biggest missed opportunity here was that we could've seen her effortlessly drink Olivier under the table again. I think that was my favorite running gag from Sky. - I loved the quest that was "here are all the guest characters, have fun!" At one point my party was Rean/Agate/Tita/Olivier and it put the biggest dumbest smile on my face. (This also made me even more bummed out that Schera never showed up.) - If Estelle doesn't show up at some point before the end of IV I'm going to scream. The teases are way too much at this point. - I know that they've talked about doing a Calvard series in the past but all of this build really feels like it's working towards a series finale, not just a finale for Cold Steel. But it's Trails, so I'm sure there's some enormous plot twist they've planted the seeds for that I'm still not noticing. In short: game good, loc terrible.

One localization thing that stuck out to me was that Laura is definitely not the type of person to say "yeah". For any reason. She'd probably vomit halfway through getting it out. Also, I'm not sure if I noticed it during my first playthrough, but when Rean got Divine Song, the game text had it's Japanese name

They got a few xseed people working on CS3 and 4 but only on a mainplot/voiced lines basis and they probably have way less oversight on even that. I was seeing Hatsuu react to the loc on twitter and it looks like only a few of the things she put into the game before getting goddamn tuberculosis and needing to go on sick leave made it in. (For example, that first Laura e-mail where she talks in all caps was Hatsuu's idea, you get another email from her later where the subject line is all caps but the actual body was clearly written by someone else who wasn't in on the gag.)
