Looks comparable to a vewlix https://vewlixshop.com/product/street-fighter-v/ arcade setup, for a third of the price.

I probably wouldn't be so viscerally disappointed in LCD monitor replacements in CRT cabinets if the monitor ever actually fit or didn't look completely out of place.

There's a few cabinets with horizontally mounted monitors that reflect the display on a mirror. Would those look bad if their CRTs were replaced?

I guess it would really depend upon the individual cabinet and monitor but perhaps you are on to something. I have never seen one like that though so I can't really render an opinion.

I have seen online that people have replaced the monitor in Sega Megalo cabinets with a projector, and in my opinion those don't look bad in pictures.

It's janky for sure but I did a diy desk setup that is honestly perfect. Down to the height of the control panel matching a vewlix to the inch.

https://www.target.com/p/wood-and-metal-writing-desk-with-storage-natural-room-essentials-8482/-/A-80599657

I bought this desk and remounted the shelf to the center of the underside which was super easy. Then I added a tension track with a snug but slidable piece of plywood to the bottom of the shelf. I put my mayflash F500 on (that I already owned) when I want to play arcade games.

Rounded it out with a MiSTer, an Asus pro art 1920:1200 monitor which looks great and is mega easy to run tate, and a decent Creative 2.0 speaker set.

Is it janky? Yes. Was my wife happy I didn't spend a boatload? Yes. Am I satisfied with it? Absolutely.

Can you show pics without the joystick and closer in on how you mounted that plywood underneath?

Sure!

I measured out the original peg and screw holes and shifted them to center. I actually used tracing paper to keep the ratios easy. Just redrilled some pilot holes and moved the mounting hardware

For the sliding deal I just went to Home Depot with some measurements and asked them to err on the side of smaller cuts. I had mounted the 'tracks' with basic wood screws, with the slider board in place and plenty of pressure for a snug fit.

I'm not proud of the finger pull and some day I'll buy a 1"+ circular bit to clean that up but it works for now.

All in all a nice easy weekend project. I didn't have to even use my own saw, just paid for the cuts at Home Depot. I already had an electric drill at home.

Pumped someone asked! I know the retro space jokes about burning money but I like these good enough solutions.

Believe me, I have the GNDZERO import list bookmarked.

I've also experimented with micro PCs and trying to figure out JAMMA compliant builds that would work with x86 Godot Linux exports.

I think my next project will be in the bar top mod space with a custom Linux image to run my own 'multicade' of Godot games. That wouldn't need all the JAMMA or CRT support.

Groovymister looks cool as heck but I couldn't figure out any form of API for maybe rendering to a screen buffer and streaming the byte stream 'signal' in a similar way. Video processing is way outside my realm though

I think your best bet is probably just searching youtube for "<game name> high score" or "<game name> 1CC" and studying some of the videos that come up. You'll have to avoid TAS or savestated playthroughs as they probably won't give you human-viable strategies.

MARP ( http://replay.marpirc.net/ ) is another good resource as it's got highscore replays for almost every game emulated in MAME but you'll need to setup each game in wolfmame to watch the replay files.

Well, it's set up so that each night we play two games from the following list and three random games from throughout the arcade. We've already done DK Jr, Pole Position, Robotron and Mr TNT (got the high score 607,410 :c00l:) but they'll come around again in the second half of the season.

Donkey Kong Jr
Mario Bros
Mr. TNT
Pole Position
Puzzle Bobble
Robotron
Satan's Hollow
Smash TV

I've looked up what I can and practiced a bit on those through emulation (still looking for tips if anyone has them) but there's also another 80 or so games to fill the remaining three slots on a given night.

Thanks. I was hoping to find something more explanatory as this is my first time really going for high scores and there are quite a few games in this place that are unknown to me, but this is at least enough to show me what I should be doing.

Donkey Kong Jr

Start a two player game. On the first player, stand on the bottom ledge and wait for a snapjaw to fall into the water. Jump into the water timing it so that you and the snapjaw hit the water at the exact same time. Both players will get an extra life.

I read this trick in a video game magazine forty years ago, it's been sticking in my head until now.

Mario Bros

Two players can play this cooperatively, but be careful, you can gently caress the other player by knocking him off his feet, especially with the POW.

Smash TV

If you're playing an early version, it's impossible to get a 'good' ending.

Not sure how it plays like rear end, it's a twin stick shooter that is super responsive to your actions....

It is just rooms of dudes however. Not like the famous Donkey Kong, which is rooms of, uh, Donkeys?

your dude's way too slow by default and it's way too hard to 1CC, in a bad way. in a way that's utterly mindnumbing. the snes port improved things a lot but it's still kind of boring

Yeah. Any game by Eugene Jarvis (Robotron, Smash TV, NARC) requires a constant stream of quarters unless you know exactly what you're doing and have godly reflexes.

XtraSmiley
Oct 4, 2002

Robotron can be marathoned by many people, not sure that's a great example. In fact, it's considered the greatest twin stick shooter of all time.

STV, yeah, designed to eat quarters, and I own the actual cabinet and still can't 1CC it, so you're likely right, but I'd love to see someone crush it!

No idea about NARC though, it does seem like a quarter muncher, but he also designed Defender and for me that game is an easy quarter eater, but I've seen people rock it for a long time on 1 credit.

Robotron is a classic, and very marathonable. NARC is much easier to 1CC than Smash TV but it's still pretty jank

Trip reporting the arcade league here because why not? Last night's games were...

Smash TV: 441,680. Not much to say about it that hasn't been said. After Robotron, this game moves at a snail's pace and a good score seems really dependant on getting lucky with extra lives and rare pickups.
Asteroids: 13,370. This was my first time playing on an actual vector machine so that was cool. Those bullets were bright as hell! I know the common strategy in this one is to sit in the middle but I found slowly drifting around makes it easier to avoid the small UFO's shots.
Tempest: 27,487. Another vector game I don't have much experience with but I liked it. The spin dial controller was a bit finicky, I wish I could've used a bigger wheel with a handle or something.
Puzzle Bobble: 160,640. My Snood skills came in handy but I only had a few tries at this one. Another player clearly had a better handle on how scoring works in this game because his score was like 4,000,000 over second place. Also this game doesn't display your score after a game over unless you get on the leaderboard
Jump Bug: 39,050. Never heard of this one but I ended up with the top score. It's sort of like Moon Patrol but you're constantly bouncing though various settings and shooting cute aliens. Controlling the movement of the car was pretty janky and unlike other platformers I'd played but it was also oddly intuitive? Anyway, I apparently got close to the end of the game so I'll have to revisit someday and try to make that happen.

Overall I'm in third place in our ranking system so far with 82 points and second and first having 87 and 100 respectively. Pretty happy with that, especially considering the guy in first place is the one who services all these machines.
