Cure for cancer discovered!
Court physicians hate him!

Hi again! I’ve dabbled a bit here and there, but if you know me then it’s probably from my Al Andalus thread, and if you don’t then welcome!

What?
Crusader Kings 2 is a grand strategy game by Paradox Interactive set in the Middle Ages, and we’ll be playing as the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the immediate aftermath of the First Crusade. Paradox games are quite popular and there a ton of megacampaigns spanning multiple games, but this thread will only tackle CK2, simply because we’re going legislative with it.

Legislation? Senates? Politics?
Yep, this’ll be a senatorial LP based on the historical parliament of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, where you guys will take the roles of the powerful nobles and influential courtiers that come together to draft policies, make decisions and ultimately determine the future of the Kingdom. I'll go into more details on the rules and procedure in the next post, but this thread as a whole was inspired by Wiz’s Crete LP, found here, with my own little twist and a very medieval take.

gently caress senates! Goons ruin everything!
Fair enough, this probably won’t be for you. You’re still free to follow the actual LP, of course, the table of contents will be regularly updated, and updates themselves will be written in such a way that you don’t have to read every single post just to follow the LP.

Anything else?
Yeah, I should add that this won’t be a completely vanilla experience, and I’ll be modding the game to throw a spanner in the works or shake things up whenever they become too static. I’ve already changed things up a bit (and if you’ve got any decent ideas, feel free to PM me and let me know), but I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll leave it at that for now.

With all that said, let’s jump right in!

That said, obviously the higher-ranking Counts and Dukes will always be a minority and probably valued quite highly by everyone here, but each of the ranks have their own merits.
Talented or prominent Courtiers, for example, are very likely to be granted Counties upon new conquests, not to mention minor titles and council positions. Barons will remain static for much of the game, but a stable voting base is nothing to snuff at. Counts and Dukes are much more visible, but they will undoubtedly become embroiled in the various power struggles of the realm, allowing them to rise to great positions or fall to disgrace and ignominy much quicker than other ranks.

Cure for cancer discovered!
Court physicians hate him!

Welcome, my lords! All sitters are permitted to meet every 5 years to determine the immediate future of their realm in a formal session, during which any member may propose policy for scrutiny by the legislative and judicial body of the historical kingdom of Jerusalem — the Haute Cour.

Characters
As anyone who’s played Crusader Kings 2 knows, everything revolves around dynasties, so characters play a pivotal part in this LP. If you want to actually participate in the LP, then you’ll have to claim or create a character, and from that point onward your fate in the Haute Cour will be inexorably linked to the fate of your in-game character and family.

How so? Well, the King of Jerusalem is simply first amongst equals, which means that the policy of the realm will largely depend on his vassals. So the better your character performs in-game, the greater weight your voice carries in the Haute Cour, and thus in deciding the future of the realm. This is represented by the number of votes that each feudal rank has in a legislative session, with Courtiers having one vote, Barons having two votes, Counts having three votes, Dukes having four votes and Kings having five votes.

These votes are then used to support or oppose various proposals submitted by members of the Haute Cour (more on that below) which are then implemented in the next update.

This makes the Haute Cour inherently unfair, but we’re smack in the middle of the Medieval Age, so get used to it. And because titles aren’t exactly plentiful, this means that most starting characters will be courtiers, but they will have plenty of ways to make their voice heard all the same.

Of course, we’re playing Crusader Kings 2, so I have no doubt that there will be assassinations and imprisonments and executions aplenty, and characters will be dying like flies. So I’ll try to keep an updated list of available characters for you to choose from if your dynasty happens to expire.

New members of the Haute Cour have independent loyalties, but they can join up to form factions with other sitters, as outlined below.

Lastly, I should mention that imprisoned characters still have votes in the assembly. However, in the rare occurrence where most of the realm has been imprisoned (75% of direct vassals), either by foreign invaders or civil war, the bideccennial session will be indefinitely postponed. Can't exactly have an assembly of nobles when there are no nobles.

Proposing Legislation
Once the Haute Cour is in session, any lord of the realm can submit legislation, which largely consists of Policies and Laws, described below.

As mentioned, members of the Haute Cour may support proposals of their choosing, with Courtiers holding one vote, Barons holding two, Counts holding three and Dukes (called Princes in-game) holding four. Also, members of the in-game Council receive two additional votes.

These votes may be deposited in favour of several different proposals, but crucially, they may also be used to oppose proposals that are deemed dangerous or foolish. If at least 1/3rd of a proposal’s votes are in opposition, then that proposal is submitted for the consideration of the King. If at least 2/3rd of a proposal’s votes are in opposition, it is struck from the books regardless of the amount of support received.

Sessions of the Haute Cour last 48 hours, and after this period, the 3 most popular proposals are gathered into a single document or Recess, which is then implemented in the next update.

There are various rules that must be considered during legislative sessions, also outlined below.

Factions
Factions are not a necessity, they’re simply a way for various lords with a common goal to realise their ambitions — especially if those ambitions happen to conflict with the King’s agenda.

Everybody starts as an independent party in the Haute Cour, but factions are encouraged because the single largest faction will always be able to force a policy into the Recess, regardless of the amount of support it receives (which policy is chosen is ultimately decided by the faction leader). Furthermore, they can submit an extra piece of legislation (so either a policy or law) if it receives the required amount of support (in other words, if it is amongst the 3 most popular proposals). This would bring the number of accepted legislative items in that session to a maximum of 4.

If there is no dominant faction (top two have an even amount of votes), then neither can force a Policy into the Recess.

Anybody can create a faction, and if you think none of the available factions properly reflects your ideals or doesn’t sufficiently recognise foreign threats or opportunities, then all you need is a thematic name, an attractive agenda and a snazzy 100x100 icon to found your own faction.

The new faction must attain a certain level of support (currently set at 3 members) before the next legislative session, otherwise it will be automatically disbanded. Similarly, if factions decrease in popularity for a sustained period of time (less than 3 active members for 3 successive legislative sessions), then it is disbanded to make way for the more popular factions.

Policies
Policies constitute a focused set of actions that a member of the Haute Cour wants to achieve in the next update. The number of actions that can be included in one policy is set at 3 or less. That said, policies include almost anything that can be done in-game and are usually valid for the next update only, though a time period of 10 years may be set if so desired.

A few examples include:
  • The Holy Mission, which mandates that the King accomplish the following in the next update: save 300 gold for a campaign against the Abbasid Caliphate, and declare a holy war with the aim of conquering the Duchy of Baghdad.
  • The Punishment for Treason Act, which mandates that the King execute all those who were involved in the defeated Waldensian Uprising, with the exception of the rebel leader — who will be tortured, have his lands revoked, and then be executed. The revoked lands will be awarded to the more-deserving Marshal of the Realm.
  • The Disease Prevention Policy, which mandates that a sum of 500 gold be spent on the construction of hospitals in the capital duchy, along with Sick Houses and Leper Colonies.
…and so on, though a single Policy must work towards a specific goal, otherwise it may be declared illegal by the King. Like I said though, almost anything can be accomplished via Policies.

Also, it is important to note that the more detailed the Policy is the better, because otherwise the King will take matters into his own hands, which can create an end result wholly unrecognisable to what was initially intended.

Laws
Laws are a way of effecting permanent policies and reigning in the powers of the King, as occurred in the historical Kingdom of Jerusalem. These are represented by the in-game laws, and once passed they will have a permanent effect in our territories, though they can be repealed in future sessions.

Possible Laws include those in the in-game laws tab, which are:
  • Gender Laws (we start with Agnatic-Cognatic).
  • Succession Laws (we start as an Elective Monarchy).
  • Realm Laws (we start with Papal Investiture, Free Realm Inheritance, Vassal Wars Allowed, Minimum Centralisation, Traditional Status of Women, None Revoke Titles, Feudal Administration).
  • Obligation Laws (we start with Balanced Noble, Burgher, Church and Tribal Obligations).
  • Council Laws (we start with Empowered Council, Council War Declaration, Council Imprisonment, Ruler Revoke Titles, Ruler Grant Titles, Ruler Executions, Ruler Banishment, Limited Council Authority).
  • Limitations on persons appointed to the Council (the advisory body of the King, aka the in-game council).
Additionally, custom Laws can be drafted that aim to restrict the king's prerogative (detailed below). These Laws may contain a maximum of 3 clauses, and must be directed at a single matter. So for example:
  • Minimum war chest, whereby a minimum of 500 gold is to be kept in the treasury at all times, so as to be prepared for unplanned wars.
  • Limitations in diplomatic actions. So as an example, “The King isn’t permitted to declare war unless there are no other ongoing wars, and the realm’s levies are at least at 75% strength.”
  • Limitations in diplomatic relations. So as an example, “Any alliances and non-aggression pacts with the Egyptian King are to be terminated with immediate effect, until further notice.”
  • Limitations on the pool of persons appointed to a particular position, such as the Council. So for example, “Only commanders with a martial score of 10 or more may be appointed to the office of Marshal.”
…and so on. If you’re unsure whether your proposed law is legal, just say so and I’ll let you know.

Lastly, in cases where Laws and Policies contradict one another, the law will always take precedence.

Directives
Directives are optional pieces of legislation, and are essentially a way of putting smaller-scale goals into action without much fuss. Possibly temporary in nature, they will usually last for as long as the awarded character is alive, cut short only if a future Directive conflicts with the older one.

Directives are submitted and considered separately from the more-formal Policies/Laws, and members of a particular faction are not limited to Directives submitted by their own faction. Any lord can declare support for any Directive presented by anyone else.

The list of available Directives includes:
  • Appointing a specific character as Designated Regent.
  • Awarding a Minor Title to a character.
  • Appointing a specific character as a Commander.
  • Arranging the marriage of a specific courtier.
Directives can also include narrative fluff, such as:
  • Submitting a directive to replace the royal ensign of the primary kingdom to [new coat of arms here].
  • Submitting a directive that awards the King with the nickname “the Hand of God”.
  • Submitting a directive to rename our puppet state in Constantinople to the “Latin Empire”.
A maximum of 3 directives are accepted in a single session. If unsure whether your piece of legislation would constitute a Proposal, Law or Directive, just ask and I’ll let you know.

Number of Legislative Items per Session
Any independent member of the Haute Cour may submit only a single piece of legislation, and out of all submitted proposals, the 3 with the greatest amount of support will be combined into the Recess of that particular session.
Factions are normally limited to a single piece of legislation, but the leader of the largest faction can force a policy into the Recess, so in some cases the maximum number of legislative pieces accepted into the Recess can rise to 4.
Directives are completely optional, and are submitted and scrutinised separately from Policies/Laws. A maximum of 3 directives are accepted per legislative session.

When submitting a new piece of legislation, you must clarify whether it is a Policy, Law or Directive, so I can make sure that it’s acceptable.

After the Legislative Session
Legislative sessions are 48 hours long; the first 24 hours is for the drafting of legislation, and the second 24 hours is for actually voting on the proposed legislation.
Once a legislative session has come to an end, the 3 or 4 proposals with the greatest support in the Haute Cour are gathered into a single bill — the Recess.
If any two items in the Recess conflict, the item with the greater support is prioritised. Also, the item forced into the Recess by the largest faction has priority over all others.
If any of these Policies/Laws received at least 1/3rd of opposition votes, then it is submitted for the consideration of the King. If they received at least 2/3rd of opposition votes, then it will be struck from the recess altogether. If this occurs, the King may strongarm a policy of his own into the recess, wholly dependent on his stats and traits.

Directives are supported separately from Laws/Policies.

Ruler Prerogative
The King can perform a number of actions without authorisation from the Haute Cour, though many of these can be prohibited via Laws. The ruler’s prerogative currently includes:
  • Staging a coronation ceremony.
  • Awarding minor titles.
  • Arranging marriages for family members and courtiers.
  • Taking loans from merchant communities.
  • Imprisoning treasonous or dishonourable persons.
  • Humiliating/Torturing/Banishing/Executing treasonous or dishonourable persons.
  • Ransoming/Humiliating/Torturing/Banishing/Executing prisoners of war.
  • Sending gifts.
  • Purchasing favours.
  • Converting his own religion.
  • Requesting that courtiers and vassals covert to his religion.
  • Converting his own culture (cannot be prohibited).
  • Embracing a secret religion (cannot be prohibited).
  • Requesting that courtiers and vassals convert to his secret religion (cannot be prohibited).
  • Joining societies (cannot be prohibited).
  • Committing suicide (cannot be prohibited).
Everything else isn’t ruler prerogative, and must therefore be accomplished via legislative proposals, such as the following:
  • Distributing titles.
  • Appointing members of the Council (the in-game council).
  • Declaring wars (also requires Council acceptance).
  • Forming alliances.
  • Enacting various Decisions, such as Expel the Jewry and Hold a Grand Tournament.
  • Constructing castles, cities and churches, and their sub-buildings.
  • Constructing forts and hospitals, and their sub-buildings.
  • Constructing Great Projects.
  • Recruiting retinue troops.
  • Changing the succession laws of the realm.
  • Assassination (with direct action only, as internal assassinations are restricted to the plots mechanic and using that is down to the character themselves).
So for example, if a member of the Haute Cour decides that the King has been appointing friends or underwhelming candidates to the office of Chancellor, they can propose a law that will ensure that the most capable candidate (highest diplomacy) is appointed to the office instead, regardless of preferences or circumstances. This removes the right to appoint members of the Council from ruler prerogative.

Rules of the Haute Cour
There are certain limits on what one can do in a legislative session, listed below:
  • Characters may be claimed or created at any time.
  • You cannot join or change factions when the Haute Cour is in session.
  • A member of a Faction may support or oppose legislation submitted by anyone.
  • Courtiers are entitled to 1 vote, Barons to 2 votes, Counts to 3 votes, Dukes to 4 votes, Kings/Viceroys to 5 votes. Members of the Council have 2 additional votes.
  • The Designated Regent minor title has 1 additional vote, but in the event of a incapable or underage ruler and resulting regency, this will rise to 5 votes.
  • Votes are cumulative, so for example, a Count may have 10 votes if they are on the Council and become Regent.
  • In addition to supporting Policies or Laws, lords may vote Aye/Nay on each Directive.
  • Rank has no effect when Directives are being considered. In this case, each member of the Haute Cour has only a single vote, Aye or Nay.
  • If Policies and/or Laws gather sufficient opposition, they may be struck from the bill. The King may strongarm his own agenda into the bill in their place.
  • In cases where Laws and Policies contradict one another, the policy will take precedence.
  • If support for two proposals are equal, and there is only one place remaining in the Recess, the King chooses between them.
  • For obvious reasons, legislation cannot pertain to the ruler’s personal life, unless is he is underage. So, for example, the Haute Cour has no control over who the King marries, though unwise decisions may affect his standing amongst his lords.
  • The Haute Cour has no authority over the Character Focus or the Ambition of the King, those being his private matter.

Below is a short summary of the relevant game mechanics, which is obviously important to drafting proposals and legislation. If I’m missing out on anything big, let me know and I’ll include it, and if you want more info then just click on the headings.

CHARACTERS
-Like I said above, everything revolves around characters, though in the case of this LP a lot of character actions will be treated as state actions, with some exceptions.
-When a character dies, the player takes control of their heir, assuming they have managed to procure one. This will be true for you guys as well, in terms of the character you pick from the list above — their name becomes your name, their family your family, their fate your fate.

-Attributes — the skills of a character, which can lay in the arts of Diplomacy, Martial, Stewardship, Intrigue or Learning.
-Traits — these form the personality of a character, including various traits such as Kind, Wroth, Zealous, Fat, Maimed, Pilgrim and countless others. Traits affect attributes and opinions, and therefore play a very important part in the capabilities and reputation of a character.
-Religion — same religion characters have a higher opinion and different religions have a malus. Religion affects almost every aspect of the game, from marriage to wars.
-Culture — similar to religions in that related cultures have higher opinions, but various culture may also have special abilities, buildings and succession laws. For example, Outremer lords can raid.
-Ambition — this is the stated goal for a character, such as marrying someone or conquering a province.
-Focus — this is simply what a character is interested in improving or practicing over the next few years, such as improving relations with family members or focusing on his martial skills.
-Levies — the size of the army that can be raised by a character, depending on realm size, buildings, demesne laws, vassal opinions, martial scores etc.
-Wealth — the size of a character’s treasury, with the King’s wealth also being the treasury of the realm, and is affected by stewardship scores, buildings, tax income etc.
-Prestige — the measure of the respect garnered by a certain character and dynasty, improved by diplomacy scores, titles, victorious wars etc.
-Piety — a measure of the piety garnered by a certain character, and can be improved by learning scores, buildings, charitable actions etc, and is spent by declaring holy wars, divorcing wives, creating titles, requesting claims, excommunications etc.
-Dynasty — characters are usually a part of a dynasty, and through marriages and alliances, it is possible to inherit strong and weak claims to different territories.
-Bloodlines — some characters are able to trace their lineage back to one of the great names of history, such as Charlemagne or Genghis Khan or Muhammad Jizrunid, granting them prestige and piety benefits, opinion modifiers and even special abilities. By performing great deeds worthy of legend, characters may well forge a bloodline that will be remembered for all time.

GOVERNMENT
-For our little country, the feudal system reigns all aspects of governance, with the King distributing land to various tiers of vassals.
-These tiers are, from least powerful to most, the Barons, Counts, Dukes and Kings/Viceroys. These vassals supply the ruler with taxes and soldiers, but they also have ambitions of their own, and may agitate against rulers or even plot their downfall in their quest for power.
-There is a limit to the number of vassals a ruler can have, meaning the rest will have to be courtiers, or else land may break away upon the ruler’s death.

The Council
-Some of these vassals, usually the most powerful or most capable, can be appointed to the King's Council. This council consists of five important offices — the Chancellor, Marshal, Steward, Spymaster and Court Chaplain — that are responsible for advising the ruler and assisting him in governing the realm.
-Each of these offices can perform certain tasks:
  • The Chancellor can Perform Statecraft, Improve Relations, Fabricate Claims, Sow Dissent.
  • The Marshal can Organise the Army, Suppress Revolts, Train Troops, Research Military Tech.
  • The Steward can Administer Realm, Collect Taxes, Oversee Construction, Research Economy Tech.
  • The Spymaster can Sabotage, Scheme, Build Spy Network, Study Technology.
  • The Court Chaplain can Hunt Apostates, Proselytise heretic/heathens, Research Cultural Tech, Improve Religious Relations.
Laws
-There are several categories of laws, split into Inheritance laws, Realm laws, Obligation laws, Council laws.
-Inheritance Laws determine the laws of succession of Jerusalem. We are currently an Agnatic-Cognatic Elective Monarchy, which means our most powerful vassals elect a ruler upon the death of the King.
-Realm laws control determine the various aspects of general law. Our current realm laws are:
  • Papal Investiture.
  • Free Realm Inheritance.
  • Vassal Wars Allowed.
  • Minimum Centralisation.
  • Traditional Status of Women.
  • None Revoke Titles.
  • Feudal Administration.
-Obligation laws determine the amount of taxes and levies that vassals must provide to the King. Our current obligation laws are:
  • Balanced Noble Obligations.
  • Balanced Burgher Obligations.
  • Balanced Church Obligations.
  • Balanced Tribal Obligations.
-Council laws control the amount of absolute power that the King possesses, and determines whether he can rule without the will of the council. Our current council laws are:
  • Empowered Council.
  • Council War Declaration.
  • Council Imprisonment.
  • Ruler Revoke Titles.
  • Ruler Grant Titles.
  • Ruler Executions.
  • Ruler Banishment.
  • Limited Council Authority.

Diplomatic Actions
-Diplomatic actions are interactions that can be taken with nearby rulers, many of which require certain laws or technologies before they can be used. They can include Feudal Interactions, Courtier Interactions, Council Interactions, Dynastic Interactions, Foreign Interactions, Prisoner Interactions and Papal Interactions.
-Feudal Interactions include:
  • Revoke title, Grant title.
  • Grant viceroyalty.
  • Award honorary title, Revoke honorary title.
  • Offer vassalisation to an independent ruler (must be of a lower rank).
  • Swear fealty to another ruler (must be of a higher rank).
  • Retract vassalage, Transfer vassalage.
  • Grant independence to a vassal.
  • Demand peace between two vassals at war.
  • Demand gavelkind law be implemented by a vassal.
-Courtier Interactions include:
  • Invite to court, Ask to leave court.
  • Order to take the vows, which disinherits them as they'll join a monastic order.
  • Send to holy order, which also disinherits them.
  • Demand religion conversion.
  • Assign guardian of a child or for a child.
  • Buy a favour, which can be used to call in council support, demand peace etc.
-Council Interactions include:
  • Appoint councillor, Fire councillor.
  • Change council position.
  • Request council position, if you have a liege.
  • Resign from council, if you're on one.
  • Call in council support, from a councillor who owes you a favour.
  • Request council support, for a law that you're trying to pass.
-Plot Interactions are involved withthe plots mechanic, which is down to characters themselves and the senate plays no part.

-Dynasty Interactions include:
  • Arrange a marriage, Arrange a divorce.
  • Arrange a betrothal, Break a betrothal.
  • Legitimise bastard.
  • Form a non-aggression pact, Break non-aggression pact.
  • Form an alliance, Break an alliance (requires non-aggression and marriage pacts first).
-Foreign Interactions include:
  • Assassinate, pay a sum of gold to try and assassinate someone.
  • Send gift, gives a relations boost.
  • Give artifact, gives a relations boost and transfer the artifact.
  • Declare war, Offer peace.
  • Call to arms, to get allies into wars.
  • Offer to join war.
  • Release tributary state, if we have one.
-Prisoner Interactions include:
  • Imprison, Release from prison (requires a reason, other accrues infamy).
  • Execute prisoner.
  • Banish prisoner.
  • Ransom prisoner, Ask to ransom prisoner.
-Papal Interactions include:

  • Ask for a claim to another title.
  • Ask for excommunication of another ruler.
  • Ask to lift an excommunication.
  • Ask for money.
  • Ask for invasion.
  • Ask for a crusade.

WARFARE
-Declaring war requires our King or possibly a vassal to possess a casus belli on a foreign country.
-Once war is declared, army levies are raised throughout the entire country, and the war is fought until one side wins or a white peace is agreed upon.
-In addition to levies, mercenary companies and holy orders can also be hired to fight in wars, using money or piety depending on the circumstances.

DECISIONS
-Decisions are actions that can be taken by a ruler, ranging from minor actions such as recruiting a physician or commander, to major ones like forming a new empire. These are Conversion Decisions, Holy Order Decisions, Realm Decisions and Minor Decisions.
-Conversion Decisions include:
  • Convert to liege's religion.
  • Convert to attacker's religion.
  • Convert to spouse's religion.
  • Convert to liege's culture.
  • Convert to a new culture.
-Holy Order Decisions include:
  • Borrow money from a holy order, such as the Knights Templar.
  • Donate money to a holy order, for a hefty piety return.
  • Vassalise a holy order.
  • Expel a holy order, if they're independent and king-rank.

Okay, so a quick breakdown - the second post contains the list of landed characters that can be claimed at the game's start, to the second post. They're claimed on a first-come first-serve basis, but once they've all been claimed, feel free to create your own courtier. Your courtier will be landed as soon as we come into some counties/baronies, again on a first-come first-serve basis.

The third post is the Rules of the thread. They might be a bit finnicky, still not sure so I figure we'll give it a go and I can adjust on an as-needed basis. Also, I'm thinking about having 5-year updates right now, but may extend it to 10 years depending on feedback, so we'll see how that goes as well.

The fourth post will have some basic info about CK2 mechanics, I'll edit them in whenever I have a chance to write it up.

I want to leave some time for characters to be claimed and created, so I'll have the intro chapter up tomorrow or the day after. The first formal legislative session will be soon after that.

That's all the landed characters claimed, so at this point everyone is free to create your own characters. This would be enough:

Name: Robert
House: d'Zora

You'll still be able to participate as a Courtier, and as soon as a barony or county becomes available in-game, I'll give it to a character by the same name and dynasty. Traits will be randomised, though I suppose you can pick your own cultures, since crusaders would've come from everywhere.

Just to be clear, you can still participate as a Courtier, which means you'll have 1 vote in legislative sessions. But you'll only actually be in-game (as a baron or count) once some land becomes available, which increases your influence to 2 or 3 votes.

Also, I've edited the number of votes each character has into the second post.

Born to a a minor landed dynasty in Zeeland, Kristof was expected to marry , sire heirs and take over the family hold in time. But from a young age Kristof displayed an unnaturally strong fascination with windmills. As soon as he was old enough he set out in a whirlwind tour of the northern Holy Roman Empire, seeing every type of windmill (and even the occasional watermill) he could. Despairing that he would never amount to anything, the family patriarch named his second son heir and insisted Kristof prove himself a man by joining the crusade for the holy land or else be disowned and lose his noble status. To everyone's surprise, Kristof somehow survived the trip and the fighting and now finds himself in the court of Jerusalem, where he continues to preach about the beauty, brilliance and usefulness of the windmill.
