Unrelated, I think one of my favorite things in the whole wide world is when video game composers just casually rip off other songs, like no one is going to notice.

The Mote in God's Eye

While I listen to what y'all have posted, can I just mention Blake Robinson's Synthetic Orchestra?

He's a man who now has done three albums of orchestral Chrono Trigger covers

My personal favorite is the complete Orchestration of the Super Metroid soundtrack. Really underlines how great the music and sound design in that game was, with music working as background sound effects as well as music. I'm pretty sure I've heard the mother brain music in my dreams. Listen to how the music creates this shambling, screaming monster with its disjointed rhythm!

Also: Mark Morgan. Ex-keyboardist for Starship (follow-on to Jefferson Starship) he did the first two Fallout soundtracks; another good example of music working as sound effect and music. I knew him before that as the dude who composed the Zork Nemesis soundtrack, and after who did the soundtrack to Planescape Torment. (I'm not sure he gets the credit he deserves for that last one; Morgan was brought in after some elaborate music plans failed, and only had a few weeks to do the whole thing. There are basic themes that repeated a fair bit, but still, it works so well in context.) And so: I picked up a $5 DVD of the 1994 Steven King's The Stand miniseries. And I'm watching it, and it is driving me crazy, because some of the music sounds *exactly* like Mark Morgan in that late '90s period, even using similar...sounding....things. I checked the credits, but Morgan is not listed. Now I'm a musical dummy, so did Morgan actually work on the Stand, or did he have the same influences and used similar sound effects, or what?

Three versions of one song!

This was my ringtone for a time, because honestly, I am eternally a 12 year old boy and "The Fart Orchestra presents: At Doom's Gate" will never not be funny to me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2oyweqZ7WM

For an honestly surprisingly good version of that track, for how much the system sometimes struggled with rock sounds compared to Sega's systems at the time (which is why the horribleness of the 32X's is so surprising but funny).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-o1_i6KKvs

The electric guitar riff is sometimes not great, but overall it's not a bad take on the tune.

Though, the actual probably best console version is from one of the more garbage ports of it.

The project eventually wound up with Rebecca "Burger Becky" Heineman at Logicware, who had already impressed Art Data with her 3DO port of Wolfenstein 3D, and who Art Data assured the project was already well underway and just needed some fine tuning.

And the reality was that the port had effectively gone loving nowhere. The 3DO port was pretty much a one-dev job, and a miserable time was had by all. It's a miracle (albeit not exactly an ideal one) that 3DO Doom even exists.
