Something fucky with the battery for one. I drove him to a car parts store and we got new battery, plugs and leads while at it cos it needs them too.

It cranked a few times after that but was really lumpy. He fiddled with the throttle body and then wouldn't start at all haha. His mate turned up in a loving Brumby to tow it to his garage! That was gold. Made some new friends (he's the parts guy at local Toyota dealership and remembers my Sera from 10 years ago).

Anybody have any recommendations for the best OBD II app?

I have a Veepeak OBD II reader ( https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B011NSX27A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_S.QVDb6N1AS9V), and have been using the free version of Car Scanner.

I've thought about upgrading it to Pro, but have also read good things about Torque and Bluedriver.

I have an 05 Tacoma with various issues I'm trying to sort out, and a 2011 WRX. I've used the same reader and app on my (previous) 05 Outback and 09 Silverado.

Just wondering what AI uses/recommends, and why.

Current issue with the Tacoma is P0420 and P0430 codes for 'catalytic converter system, bank X - efficiency below threshold', and I'm trying to figure out if I need to replace 02 sensors or cats.

I don't know if the free version of torque allows it, but you should be able to see your cat temps, which should give some indication whether it's the cats or o2 sensors.

It does, but only if the ECU reports it.

Some of them will report in fahrenheit when Torque is expecting celsius, which gives hilarious results like a 1200 degree cat :v:. Better option is to look at the post-cat O2 data and see if the voltage is constantly switching between max and min (from 0 to 0.9v) when the cats are hot and you're idling (basically after a bit of highway driving) - if they are, the cats are done. Torque gets funny with reporting wideband O2 sensors (which an 05 Tacoma probably uses for the primary sensors, Toyota went wideband pretty early on most engines), otherwise I'd suggest comparing secondary to primary.

I don't know how well an 05 Toyota would react to using spacers on the rear sensors (obviously this should only be done on vehicles used for off-road use only :wmwink:, and never in a state that's hardcore about inspections) - my 06 Saturn gave zero fucks, but it didn't use a wideband primary. Some cars use a mix of all O2 sensors (including post cat) to figure out A/F mixture.

I'm seconding the TT train. My ex put 300k miles on a first gen, and only the last 30k were breaky/expensive. And the breaky stuff was typical VW (switchgear, electrical).

Not sure but I think he meant a twin turbo 911 since he was talking about 996 vs NSX. Little bit different than an Audi TT. Unless your ex put 300k miles on a turbo 911, in which case I’m impressed.

Dude if you fail to buy a classic NSX over a 996 Timbo then you have failed us as a moderator. Siggy bought a frickin' Aston Martin instead of the sensible choice..... and the NSX is so much a better car in every regard than any Vantage (which are great cars.)

Car scanner lets me see those. I've only been checking parameters while idling in my driveway/the parking lot at work for 10-15min.

One temp (I'm assuming pre cat) is about 550°C, the other is about 330°C.

The bank 1 and bank 2 sensor voltages both bounce around between .1 and .8V. They're different from one another by about .1V.

Weirdly enough, there's a gap of logged data between about 1.5 min to 10 or 11 min runtime.

Does this mean the cats are hosed? Or should I try highway driving to get them good and hot, then check?

The check engine light used to be more intermittent, but now it's consistent even after clearing it, so SOMETHING is going...

At least when the check engine light comes on, it doesn't cancel my cruise control at highway speeds, like my Outback and WRX do. That's always entertaining.

Hey I know this isn't the hardware forum, but I know some of you are IT/guru types and thought I'd run something by you here before I trash my system 6700k, 1080ti and 32GB of 2400 Corsair... Asus Z170A motherboard. Built this myself about 4-5 years ago (give or take).

I had an old liquid CPU cooler on my PC that was getting noisy so I trashed it for an air cooler. Did the install tonight. CPU coolers aren't rocket science. Took me about an hour and did a good cleaning and some cable management while I had it all apart.

Put back together, nothing. gently caress. CPU/chassis fans spin, video card LEDs light up and spin, but no signal to monitor or post. I'm thinking maybe I hosed up and bent a pin on the CPU socket or something as I removed the CPU to clean the old thermal off it. Take it back apart, fully remove the motherboard and inspect the socket. Indeed, it looks like a couple might be bent so I spend some time putting them back in and button it back up.

Same thing. Except this time I notice my DRAM light on my motherboard is lit solid. Read the manual, sounds like it could be bad/incompatible RAM which it isn't, system was working fine for years but gives instructions with what to do - press the OK button when booting.

Remove all but 1 stick of RAM, press them MEM OK button on the motherboard to go through various timings, same thing. Failure to post, no signal to monitor. Reset CLK/BIOS and hook dp cable to motherboard, bypassing the 1080, same thing.

I'm literally taking this a sign to build a new PC but it's pissing me off because it was working fine up until I decided to "fix" the cooler.

Ideas?

The lands on an LGA socket like that are spring loaded and very delicate. If you bent one, then bent it back, it could still be slightly off enough to cause problems. You might be able to tweak it just so such that it works again, but I wouldn't bet money on it. I haven't been able to fix one like that before, but I've also only tried on boards that were worse off (extremely damaged). I have heard of people being successful, though.

At this point you don’t have much to lose in taking it apart and reseating the CPU again (I have even seen crappy designs that can let you accidentally seat the CPU rotated 90/180/270 degrees in the socket) and then also make sure you’re not missing critical things like the additional PSU plugs being all plugged into the motherboard, both ram and the video card being fully seated and not obstructed by a wire or plastic tab, etc.

Unless you hit it hard with static electricity while disassembling and reassembling you will probably be able to get it to come back to life.

One last thought, make sure the motherboard isn’t grounding against the case, they don’t like that.
