What about F1’s plan to go carbon neutral by 2030?

Judging purely from the amount of carbon fibre we throw in the bin from wind tunnel testing, this is not going to happen.

How do your work schedule and production targets change in the offseason? Does it lighten up at the end of a season or do you push hard in between to prepare for the new year?

Varies by department.

Composites will be utterly rammed all the way through until T1 getting the cars built.

Everyone else is busy all year round, perhaps with a bit of a push up to T1 to get some new tech ready for the new season.

I wasn't really referring to you guys giving me poo poo, it's my family and "friends" who endlessly tell me what is wrong with the car and how to fix it.

Cool. Has design been fairly locked down for next season already? It seems like there is loads of time for wind tunneling, how long does it take composites to build a car/ when is the design locked down for stuff like engine bay and (Ferrari style) sidepods?

I don't know the answer to most of this, as I'm too far detached from the production side of things. Best guess it takes about a month for each full chassis?

I wouldn't say there's ever a lockdown as such, moreso a series of target dates for different parts that need to be met so they can build it in time before the next thing needs building. This means final design releases are often right up against the delivery date to get the max performance in.

The tunnel runs all year round for the maximum amount of time we're allowed to run it, so doesn't really get affected by car build as it is business as usual.

I think the biggest problem with the car is whatever part you work on, you should make it work better!!!

Or maybe not, as all the engineers I know that went there hate each others guts.

How much effort do you think teams will be putting into 2020 given how much is changing in 2021?

Lots! Next year is still unrestricted spending so there's a good excuse to blow a load of borrowed cash on new expensive cfd clusters, infrastructure investment and other big outgoings to give the best long term return that might not be possible come 2021.

Also I believe prize payments from 2020 will come under 2021 rules, which will be worth more per position than under current rules, so it's still worth putting efforts in rather than writing it off.

I'd expect developments to continue up to summer shutdown at minimum, though tunnel time in general throughout the year will probably be spent more on the 'next season' car than in normal years.

Are you telling me Cyril Abiteboul is a lovely manager with no rhyme or reason of creating a cohesive team of engineers that compliment and give rise to each other's strengths while covering their individual weaknesses and instead just cherry picks whoever they can and throws them into a room locking the key and shoving it up his rear end until the end of the season thinking this will actually create a step forward????

I'm telling you engineers will smile and tell lies during interviews to move to a job that pays them more wedge.
