Erm perhaps LordMune would know but is this the same "dream" from early chapters around which Griffith placed so much of his identify? IE, is this word "dream" or "vision"?

I ask because Griffith never really talked about waking from his vision-dream before, so if this is truly the same wording as his vision-dream to pile up bodies to reach his kingdom, then there's something of substance here suggesting Griffith was truly lonely/empty in Falconia and may be "awakening" from the flaws of that vision-dream.

That is, are we reading too little (vernacular "dream") into this or am I reading too much into this?

They could publish the first chapter of anything eighteen months from now and it would be unsurprising to those familiar with a Berserk release schedule. :downsrim:

More seriously, though, they could spend a decade just on books titled Rickert, and Grunbeld, and Zodd, and Sonia, all as entirely separate arcs "after Griffith disappeared from Falconia", before they'd even have to get around to the final writing on Berserk: Retribution.

No update. Just checked online and still summer of 2022.

Just reflecting. :hist101: I had tried to start a reread last summer/fall but wasn't really into it; too much ongoing noise in the world I suppose. Last weekend, however, I started in earnest. Chompy feasting should occur by Wednesday.

I don't remember when I last read from the beginning, so I don't know which thoughts I'll have had before. I still like Black Swordsman.

One thing that's a bit weird is that we never get Griffith's background; there's no motivation to contrast with Guts. Griffith has ambition, presumably not grounded in the reality of his limitations. By contrast, Guts is focused almost entirely on his limitations without ambitions.

While the campfire of dreams has always been a clear turning point, one thing that seemed more important this time was Guts' thoughts about why he was there, what he was doing. I felt, moreso than I remember, that Guts doesn't leave just to become Griffith's friend, but to find his own ambition. Even Guts reflects later, maybe his leaving is all part of Griffith's will, but in the subsequent year he finds a way to address his limitations instead of driving toward blind ambition.

Indeed this may be the ultimate reason for his survival. Sure, he falls into blind rage for a while, for indeed everyone falls at some point, but eventually he moves back to a position of proceeding forward from what is available instead of heading off blindly toward an unachievable goal. This likely would have been impossible without the year of introspection and training.

Still pondering why no one saw how fragile Griffith was except perhaps Casca. Guts was well in the thick of the intrigue and should have had enough opportunity to see it.

Like I said, nothing much new. More later.

It was a thought that just came to me a couple days ago. Having a lense to view Griffith without the prejudice of his background is beneficial, but it may have been taken a step too far. "Griffith did no wrong" is the conclusion some reached, perhaps because they concluded the Godhand is adequately detached from moral philosophies that would judge them harshly.

It feels like the lack of background forces us to equate Griffith with pure ambition, and only later do we find its external source. Like the members of the Godhand, they seem to be measured only by their vice; other characters in the story are defined by their history and flaws.

Now doubt it's a clever combination.

Though now I ponder, how much is ambition punished or rewarded throughout the story. If ambition is a measurable evil, did Guts, separating from the hawks, "become evil and deserve his punishment"?

Nearing the rescue chapter.

Oh you know, one more thing. The merging of the planes doesn't happen until later, and the eclipse is a very closed door that few can pass through. Why are there apostles in the world at all? There were eclipses before, but no apostles. Monsters show up before the eclipse, but I always read that as "gathering"/leaking and not something permanent.

Minor point but at the end of the eclipse Slan says that the coming time will probably be referred to as the age of darkness, as a result of the birth of the fifth angel. Zodd also says they'll be pouring from the gate soon, so somehow he knew but thought that Skull Knight didn't.

Seems like part of the underdeveloped lore; ie, the way it needed to be for the story.

Interesting that SK says "maybe you have some connection to the elves" when carrying Guts back to the mine the second time.

The last thread was over 300 pages, though I imagine after the forthcoming speculative infighting we'll reach a point where we need a new thread. :commissar:

Even if it is fanfic or friendfic, I hope it will convey some of the remaining notes about the story. The core message will likely be there but some of Miura's quirks and amusements will likely be gone; eg, I'm doubting there will be a chapter of roaming dick monsters; and, maybe they've assigned some of the team to uphold the tone; eg, perhaps one of them will be devoted to constantly asking "what would Puck do?".

So if Miura is Guts, who's Mori? Casca? Judeau? Puck? ... :ohdear: Griffith?

Very excited as the story unfolds though. I was in the camp of "at least give us the remaining notes about the conclusion of the story intended by the author", and this is better than that, so for now I'm onboard.

It feels like Griffith is actually there, but capable of moving as Femto did in Black Swordsman, moving out of the way of a cannonball . I do have to ask, though: Griffith pulled a self-preening on the hill of swords, "Oh I just want to find out if I feel anything". Well, Rickert just bitch slapped him, so maybe he's just back to say, "okay I feel something, if you hate me come get me".

And Zodd... because Griffith is naked without him.

Interesting. "Best fight". My first thought was, "Gee wouldn't it be crazy to do 60min just at the tree in the snow, hyperfocused on the individual muscles, the physics of the sword breaking" (I mean dramatic focus, not a documentary), "but I guess people wouldn't get it so it would probably be a bunch of flashbacks as motivation".

Then I realized, no, there's no contest. 100 Man from 1994 still feels better than the movies, but even the manga cuts out with more than half of them remaining. With all the conversation, especially talk back from the troops, it probably took over 45min, and it feels like most of the night from the story. Yes, give me a 1.5hr movie of just the 100 man battle. :stare: "Sword porn"

As to Griffith's actions, he probably just wants to get Casca out of there because he doesn't want her harmed, but this goes back to their first fair fight on the hill. Guts said he'd be Griffith's bum boy, and darnitall "you're part of my dream and I'm going to punish you until you learn, and I feel like I get my revenge". This is the end of the eclipse repeated, Griffith steals Casca because he didn't agree to give her up to Guts as part of "the plan". Guts realizes Casca is lost in the cave and becomes the black swordsman. Now Griffith is lording it over him again, "look at me up on my pedestal, I took your woman, have fun stupid Dream". (And SK is around saving people from the chompy evil)

What does Guts become now? (And what triggers that Behelit? :allears:)

. I dunno if I can handle berserk getting "dark" again. I really hope for a happy ending.
:ohdear: Eee I don't know dude.

It's fairly clear that Miura wove a good deal about fate into this story, but it really hit me writing up my thoughts earlier: For some reason this chapter feels very much like a philosophical picture of "fate versus free will". Griffith, the Godhand, Apostles, IOT, are all predicated on fate; it's what they see, understand, and believe. Guts (and maybe his band, and maybe witches and elves) represent the struggle against unfair and highly oppressive fate.

Now I'm a dumb American and can't understand a story without a happy ending (happy for whom?), but this could have an "Evangelion ending". Or maybe the Godhand gets wiped, 75% gets culled on both sides, but there will still be that one darned thread letting us know that this process repeats again in 216 years. (Casca sacrifices them both and becomes the first new godfinger) (insert Bond music).

Here's something to ponder: Who survives a happy ending? Guts can't be part of "the new cleansed world", and probably neither can Casca. Sigh... maybe I want a world where Griffith fails to protect Casca (oh crap no please don't tell me she's jumping from the cliff again but this time Guts is too far away to save her), so Guts destroys Griffith and the Godhand, but then the evil is unleashed into the world without it's leader/savior, so Guts is doomed to roam endlessly, forever battling the demons of mankind.

To be clear, I want to trust in Miura's plan, it's just I'm also a little heartbroken Guts and Casca can't have more time to heal together. Despite the series' abrupt ending (before Mori took over the reigns), that they were still together at Elfhelm brought me a kind of peace. Guts' anguish is also mine.
Casca was still terribly afraid in Guts' presence, though he was perhaps more the trigger of her eclipse memories than the object of her anger. She'd either have to become a new Casca or regress further back to her memories before they rescued Griffith.

Guts seemed cautiously reserved. He already had lots of time with Casca hating him and even blamed himself for some of that. He knows he still has that beast inside and is trying his best not to let it out. At least being around Casca he had a chance of seeing a change, however, because he's certainly built up trust with his little group.

Very soon might see a shift to Rickert's story. It feels like the endgame otherwise since Guts is out of options at this point: He either becomes an alcoholic or destroys everything, because what died in that last frame was hope.

I guess it's a bit late if they already started the movies, but the anime is still a better introduction and only runs what, 21min*25 episodes, 8.75hr total, versus 4.75hr for the three movies. The movies do an okay job of introducing the characters but you miss out on the motivations, many of the tactics and some of the political posturing. The anime seems to do a better job of hooking the viewer back into a rewatch. And there's the soundtrack.

In my opinion.

Perhaps Griffith turning into the child will awaken her, but it was never enough before.

The greater change mentally might be the absence of Guts. Though she always had an animalistic fear when he was near, there was still a pillar/guide for the group, and the group did support her. That's been lost.

Topicwise, we can discuss adult struggles, but this is not a D&D/politics thread.

Posts need to invite conversation from all thread members. Some may have skipped these pages. Others may have been fine reading them as younger adults, but no longer.

For the topic of rape in Berserk, it's clear that readers had different reactions and hold different opinions thematically and artistically, but this is not the thread for a debate of what constitutes "pornographic" or "abusive".
