I have mixed feelings about this but I feel like if anyone deserves a sense of closure on all this it would be Mori and Miura's team :unsmith: It will be nice to see an ending but it feels so bitterweet.

I definitely wish them the best. What an undertaking! I cannot even imagine trying to do what they're doing. I know manga has been finished posthumously before but for Berserk it just feels different and I can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe it's the complexity of it all...I don't know, but it's not like the crew wasn't being prepared to take over the reigns eventually but that was under the assumption that Miura would still have his input and be directing things.

Honestly it's really cool that Mori is not only his long-time friend but also has his own manga career. It's not just Some Guy taking over.

I just really hope fans won't be too nitpicky if things aren't like, absolutely perfect. :smith: Nothing is without criticism but at least take the context of the situation in to consideration.

Well this is very optimistic news. I'm humbled to read it. As has been said Mori and the team of Miura's apprentices would be the best ones to do it.

There will be criticisms. There will be retrospectives in years to come that talk dismissively about how you can "really tell" when the Mori chapters start. You'll hear a lot of analysis from people who read the whole series in one sitting and never had to wait through the boat or the hiatuses, and say "Berserk is still a great series but the ending just couldn't withstand the trauma of MIura's passing."

And y'know what?

That's loving ok.

Because this is about a little bit more than just the narrative satisfaction of Guts making Griffith eat poo poo. This is about recognizing a man's life work and watching those closest to him seeing it through, and on that level alone it's a beautiful work of compassion, love, and yes struggle that does the thematic elements of Berserk proud regardless of whether or not it ends up on a shelf as a GOAT like we all not-so-secretly have hoped all these decades. And who knows it might still get there.

But I know that when I read it now... it'll be with a tenderness and respect for all those who chose to devote their time to seeing the project through.

Whichever group is doing those speed scanlations isn't butchering the translation, which is a nice change of pace after like 20 years of non-Evil Genius clowns doing their best to ruin Berserk from time to time.

To toot my own horn for a bit the Evil Genius release still has better visual quality and typesetting!

I'm so sorry I couldn't remember your group's name otherwise I would have posted yours! I have you guys bookmarked, now

It's a storytelling choice, no doubt, but one that was colored by structural sexism and misogyny. Is that problematic? Of course it is. Nevertheless, I will still give Miura credit for spending the time and effort to keep Casca in the story after the fact, including finally rehabilitating her in a manner that very few fictional victims ever get to experience. This is also part of why I'm not super thrilled about the continuation's current direction.
I think the thing I will always appreciate was having Farnese and Schierke be the ones to, literally and figuratively, pull her out of it, instead of Guts. I think that was important.

Ironslave posted:

If I'm inclined to give Berserk credit, and I am, as a narrative beat it's solid and thematically resonant with a lot that came before, as other posters have pointed out. It's just depicted, as was said by another poster, pornographically. And no, I don't think that's some "the salaciousness is part of the artistic statement" thing, trying to twist yourself into a pretzel to justify it is weird; it was done that way because Miura was a guy making a comic ostensibly for men, and drew it the way he found appealing.

I don't think her tits popping out most of the times she's threatened with sexual assault is some stupid statement, especially given what follows both for her and the presence and manifestations of sexual menace throughout the rest of the work.
It really is just this. You hit it right on the head. I like berserk a lot but I'm not going to pretend it's not all of this

Can I...ask about his other work, that people get squicked about? I've never heard specifics and at this point I'm too afraid to look it up on my own. If this breaks any sort of Berserk Thread rules, I apologize, I've just heard a lot of people dancing around the subject over the years

Honestly, given what we know about the Rorouni Kenshin guy and how quickly Jump was willing to welcome him back with open arms, I wouldn't be surprised if this poo poo was fairly common. God this sucks so hard

Gigantomachia is a short one volume manga about a dude doing mixed martial arts to giant bugs. He has a magical child (elementary age or younger) that is magically one million-jillion years old who can heal him with her magic pee. It sucks. When it came out mostly people didn't want to talk about that element of it and just talked about how fun and goofy it was. But it was kind of a massive part of it and was drawn real fetishy and explicit and I thought it was really weird that people most people just kind of shrugged it off.

That's uh...that's something. I think I was actually thinking of his other series that entirely derailed one of these threads to the point of closure, but it's nice to confirm that this is just a thing Miura liked to do. I might be misremembering but was this the law Shonen Jump came out strongly against? which if so, :siren: loving yikes :siren: see, again, their relationship with the guy who does Kenshin

Brought it up in a different thread, but this is absolutely a problem across the industry involving both Shonen/seinen AND shojo/josei--there is an uncomfortable amount of manga written for girls and women BY other women about older men in relationships with school girls. Fruits Basket, Cardcaptor Sakura (CLAMP is really bad about this), His and Her Circumstances...not to mention so many casual jokey jokes about older men being in love with pre-pubecent girls when they get older(Higurashi off the top of my head but this is everywhere). And this is all in poo poo that I like. It just comes up so much that i dont know what to make of it and im pretty sure i know what the author wants me to think of it amd that makes me super uncomfortable. This poo poo about Miura is sad and gross

I had already accepted that the continuation was going to be pretty broad-strokes, so I'm pretty satisfied. I think Berserk was always going to be finished in some capacity, considering its popularity and profitability and I'm thankful it's being done by the people closest to him and not some random Seinen artist being told, "I dunno, just make an ending to Berserk. Do what you want"

Like Lord Mune said, this is a tribute
