I live in rural Michigan in an office where credibility works backwards and only stories from people you know personally carry any weight. Experts? You don't know them. They could be lying. Not like my Facebook friend, who is a doctor that I know personally through Facebook. This results in me having to sit there while someone repeats a FWD:FWD:FWD: email, claiming their friend said it. They haven't yet told me that they know a veteran who tackled an atheist professor, but it's only a matter of time.

This is all to say that I have started referring to Robert as "my friend in Portland" to save time. Sorry about the troubling parasocial relationship, Robert.

Rubin's horrible stand-up catapulted me back to the early aughts when terrible comedians could coast on pointing at things and saying "that's gay", except apparently this dude decided he'd get in on the action by pointing at himself and saying "I'm gay" and waiting for the homophobe laffs to roll in.

The Sigma male thing is very interesting to me as a terminally online lady because... well, a lot of reasons. A major flaw in the false Alpha v Beta, Chad v Incel type binary is that it's always been a thinly veiled reskin of Jocks v Nerds bullshit. And it's 2021, where nerds provably get laid. Variations on the Alpha and Chad concepts have tried to explain why dorks who aren't incels continue to have sex, but it's still obvious to anyone with eyes that plenty of women are attracted to men who don't fit the concept of an Alpha Male. So there's plenty of young men who want sexually available women, but aren't interested in becoming an Alpha Male when they can plainly see that it's not actually necessary to do that. Along comes the Sigma male concept to say: actually, those nerds you see getting laid are a third type of man, who is also you. It's carefully designed to appeal to the kind of guy who fantasizes about getting an opportunity to beat someone up and seeing everyone be surprised that the quiet nerd is a secret badass. I could be your angle... or yuor devil 😈

The interesting part is where they seem to specify "wanting an independent woman". Because that's usually lovely-dude code for "I want a woman who demands nothing". And it ties into being Not Like Other Girls, because when you're Not Like Other Girls that means you don't want dumb girly stuff like nice dates and romantic gestures and a man who puts forth any effort into his appearance whatsoever. The Sigma male is like the other side of that coin, where you're Not Like Alphas, who pursue women and try to make themselves attractive, but you're also Not Like Betas, who buy girls flowers and try to do nice things for them.

The actual message of the Sigma Male concept seems to be: embrace being shy and not wanting to put forth effort, and shut the gently caress up. The actual effect of this is that you say most women are too needy and you want an independent woman, and a woman who has wrapped her identity in being one of the good ones thinks that's actually great! And by shutting the gently caress up, you allow other people to project onto you without your actual personality getting in the way until it's too late and the sunk cost fallacy has kicked in.

Which could totally have worked! There's a lot of guys I probably would have had bad sex with if they hadn't opened their mouths and ruined it by saying dumb poo poo. Plenty of redditors seem to have utilized these techniques completely by accident, judging by r/relationships. I assume the grift is mostly in putting ads on videos men can watch that tell them they're actually fine the way they are and also secret samurai, as well as selling them books that tell them they're great.

Yeah, that's what I meant by a White House cheese room situation — I don't know if anyone was ever actually intended to believe that a White House insider goon had revealed the secret of the room with the century-old cheese wheel still inside, but years later there were folks sharing it as a fact with unsuspecting goons who lacked context. It's weird because people keep using the phrase 'only good podcast' but no one is talking about BirdNote, the podcast that updates every single day with two minutes of bird facts. I mean, Behind the Bastards is obviously extremely good, but Robert has never dedicated a portion of the episode to describing a dove sunning itself in a garden, and I don't think there's ever been any meaningful integration of birdsong. It's always been the show's major flaw, but it felt rude to bring it up.

I can't tell if putting 'porn for ladies' ads on these last two episodes is extremely inappropriate or actually appropriate as hell.

The funniest part is that I was actually already familiar with the site (unless you heard a different ethical porn streaming subscription ad). Very high production values, but runs into the problem I see a lot, which is assuming that women who are interested in paying for ethical porn aren't also into the nasty poo poo that's extra-hard to find ethically. Alas, my demographic must continue to settle for not letting anyone look at our ebook library.

Getting an ad for the porn site run by the sex toy store I shop at on one of my favorite podcasts did make me feel very Seen, however.

I was thinking about giving Knowledge Fight a try after hearing the hosts on BtB, but was intimidated by the massive backlog of episodes. Can you just jump in any time and not be completely swamped by what I can only assume is an insane Alex Jones background history?

Yeah, basically--sometimes they'll reference "we've talked about that before" but usually if it's important they'll cite a specific episode. Someone made a spreadsheet here and the 'notable drops/bits' column has been essential for me when I want to go back and relisten but can't remember when the gently caress it was. Episode 67 is about the protocols, episode 281 is really vital to understanding how Alex believes things, I think 305 covers 'discernment' but I should relisten to double-check, 325 gets into more of his fundamental beliefs, and in 340 they really dig into Steve Pieczenik. I've also been re-listening to the Mark Richards episodes lately, so I also suggest giving episode 79 a try and going in blind because the less you know about Mark Richards the funnier it is to experience for the first time. There are probably more good ones early on but my memory is hazier because it was a while ago.

gently caress how do you listen to true crime podcasts and not have a bitter taste for the cops?

Unfortunately 'true crime' can refer to a lot of things, and the majority of the most popular stuff (especially when it comes to podcasts) is of the, "trust no one, buy a security system, never help a stranger, put your DNA in a database, always cooperate with cops, it's wine o'clock somewhere!" variety. It sucks because everyone knows the best episodes of Forensic Files are the ones where it turns out the cops lacked basic competence and couldn't stop accusing the same guy for no reason even as an absurd amount of evidence piled up to the contrary.

The impression I got from Billy Wayne was that he was being asked to guest on a lot of podcasts where he was contributing a significant amount to the entertainment value without compensation, something that became more of an issue when he could no longer do stand-up shows and there was therefore nothing for him to promote. He seems to still get along with Robert, it sounds like iHeart has started paying guests something instead of nothing, and he's doing a tour now, so it would be nice to see him come back. I've seen suggestions that iHeart doesn't want him back because of his principled stance against unpaid appearances, but that feels conspiratorial compared to being busy with his own thing and not considering guesting worth his time.

Last I heard of Dan Carlin he has continued being aggressively just-asking-questions both-sides-have-points 'centrist' including in a six hour podcast about slavery. Where he deliberately avoided modern sources to avoid being too political? About slavery. He apparently was unaware that the word 'quadroon' existed, which didn't stop him from using it. No idea what he's been up to since then, I also stopped listening years ago (so I've missed two episodes I guess).

Now I have a different Dan satisfying my need for comically long podcasts of in-depth research, but this one comes out more than once a year.
