Kirby is doing the thing they almost every former DC not named Bob Stoops does when they get a head coaching job, and running an offense that is about making life easier for the defense (avoiding turnovers, chewing clock, playing field position) first and scoring points second. For some reason they just can't turn the defensive coordinator part of their brain off. Even Saban did it forever and probably still wants to do it deep down (just look at the years of whining that spread and hurry up should be illegal) he was just smart enough to figure out that he was putting himself at a disadvantage and now they basically are running a Big 12 offense. There's just no excuse for a team that has championship level talent like UGA to be playing like that

And this is why DCs generally get less HC jobs now

they're all troglodyte establish the run types

Iowa started doing this on opponent field goal attempts last night and the Gopher kicker missed a FG and an extra point long live the stink eye hawk

That's awesome and terrifying and I'm glad I'm not a B1G kicker.

I half-assed watched Florida-Mizzou to get a feel for what Tennessee is up against Saturday and I’ve still got nothing. I’m sure it’ll be another bullshit game where Mizzou Dooley’s a win over us. If anything it’ll need to be a good day for our secondary. Hopefully coming off the bye week helps us out too.

Also, lol Baylor blew a 28-3 lead.

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

I didn't even realize that Iowa State won because Texas jumped offside on the first kick that ISU missed, giving them a second chance that they made. How un-ISU like.

Sorta. They didn't really take a real kick the first time. The play was clearly dead; I think the kicker was just taking a practice swing rather than really going for it. I wouldn't say he really "missed".

The bigger thing was the penalty extended the drive, so Iowa State got to kick for the win at the last second rather than kicking for the lead and giving us the ball back with 2:00 left.

I think Iowa State had a solid chance of winning without the penalty. Our offense was rolling in the 4th quarter, but laid a huge fart of a drive in a critical moment to give ISU the ball back.

I had a pretty strong feeling that if I watched Texas-ISU it was just going to bum me out, and after the first few minutes I felt more sure so I went and did something else and I'm thinking that was the right call.

Anyway I'm pretty sure Tom Herman's on the hot seat next year. I guess 8 wins including a bowl game is still realistically on the table, in which case the seat is just kinda hot, but if we finish with 6 or 7 wins it's going to be blazing.

What exactly is the problem? It’s weird that he hasn’t been able to make the offense work a bit better. Especially since he was sooooo good at Houston and Ohio State as OC. Texas isn’t exactly lacking in resources or recruiting.

Play-calling has been shockingly pedestrian for a team with a very good WR corps and a QB who can run over LBs. It seems like 50% of our plays are this run option with trip WRs where Ehlinger will either handoff to the RB or throw to one of the WRs who is getting blocking from the other 2. Neither of these works because everyone knows they're coming. I'm shocked one of these WR screens hasn't been pick-sixed this season. Also we've got the designed-QB run, which is good for like 9 yards every time but we can't make Ehlinger do that on every play.

I think they still don't trust Ehlinger to pass over the middle. He pretty much throws only screens, dump-offs, and sideline passes. Maybe he doesn't trust himself to hit a tight window even though his WRs are good bets to win jump balls.

Basically all our offensive success is from player talent transcending the game plan. WRs make crazy sideline grabs through tight coverage, RBs break tackles on nearly every run, Ehlinger bails out drives with his tree trunk legs.

6. Counter
7. Da Bomb

Ehlinger is basically having to deal with a mashup of the Cardale/Barrett offense circa 2016 where they keep only the worst parts of each. Don't run the QB enough like what happened with Cardale and only allow short/easy passes because your ball floats and is easy to grab if a defender is in position like with Barrett. He probably can do more than he's showing right now, but Herman is basically proving that what he really learned from Urban was the steadfast belief that exclusively options/screens/swings/crosses will eventually just create enough explosive plays if you recruit well that you don't need to do anything harder. Despite literally every effective offense right now going "actually no, verts/wheels are good and keep people the gently caress away when we do throw a slant".

Won't fire his bud at OC who the game has caught up to and passed by. DC is looking the same way this year. Injuries aside, they look undisciplined and unable to tackle.

Next year really is his make or break year. They should be a mature team that should be good, but won't be if he keeps his coordinators.

So bizarre to me that presumably smart, successful coaches will mortgage their loving careers on their lovely, dumb coordinator friends.

Annual road trip to Mizzou went off without a hitch. Fun times had by all. Except for the game.

Kelly Bryant displayed some classic Kelly-Bryantness... Leaving the pocket at the slightest hint of pressure, overthrowing guys early, etc. But there were a LOT of passes that were just straight up dropped by his receivers.

The way Mizzou was hanging around during the first half, I really thought it was going to be a closer game than it was.
