It's certainly ironic that someone who seemingly spent quite a bit of time focusing on rehabilitatation in the justice system was killed by tory refusal to fund rehabilitation in the justice system.

Those hypothetical 'first days/years if office' editorials are extremely common in the Mail, Times, etc, as they allow the writers to completely fabricate scenarios that reinforce the prejudices in their readers that they themselves have created - without having to worry about any pesky requirements such as facts or the actual actions of people

Oh cool, this was written by the guy who wrote that mental biography of Corbyn, Dangerous Hero. Which, well, Peter Oborne's review is quite good: https://www.middleeasteye.net/opinion/tom-bower-book-dangerous-hero-jeremy-corbyn-labour-leader-truth

Stephen Bush absolutely rips into it

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/feb/24/dangerous-hero-tom-bower-jeremy-corbyn-hatchet-job-failure

quote:

That he refers to Corbyn’s wife, Laura, not by her preferred name of Laura Alvarez, but as “Laura Corbyn” tells you all you need to know about him. There is almost nothing in here that has not already been covered by Prince and you can achieve the same effect by purchasing a copy of Comrade Corbyn and scribbling an insulting adjective every time that Corbyn or another Labour politician is mentioned. Don’t worry that the resulting book won’t make sense: this one doesn’t either.
...
As a biography, it tells us nothing we don’t already know and gets things wrong. As a hatchet job, it is a dismal failure that condemns Corbyn’s decision to skip a meaningless Arsenal match with equal intensity as it does his failure to tackle antisemitism in the Labour ranks. Its only value is as a gift to send to an enemy – and if Tom Bower had confined the readership of this book to Corbyn alone, I for one would be better off.

La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo

Getting cold out. I always used to hate winter as I couldn't afford heating properly for a few years, or lived in a bedsit with no central heating.

-There's a cold weather payment if you're on income support etc. that's £25 a week when the temperature drops: https://www.gov.uk/cold-weather-payment (not the winter fuel allowance)
-Wearing hats and stuff inside works, as does layering up. I used to wear pyjama bottoms beneath my jeans and have 3-4 layers on. Decent wool socks also go a long way.
-If you have poo poo windows you can tape blankets or even plastic bags over glass to add a bit of insulation.
-Also be aware if you're blocking up windows etc. to make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector. Call your local fire brigade if you don't have one.
-Candles go a decent way to warming a room up with all the doors closed. I tried those terracotta plant pots upside down but found just 3-4 tealights were just as effective.
-Exercise is a good way to warm up quickly. A little jog up and down the street or some press-ups etc. did the job. Also eat loads of pasta and other carbs.
-If you're on a metre, be aware that using the kettle is less cost-effective than boiling water on a hob (I think?)

The winter solstice is on the 21st and after that we're on our way to summer. Stay warm and make sure to eat.

I used to buy cheap leggings and t-shirts from Primark and wear them along with fingerless gloves under my indoor clothes. Being colder inside than out is miserable. Poundland sells rolls of bubblewrap that you can put over windows but will obviously still let light in. You will have to keep an eye on condensation and mould. Handwarmers are brilliant, the Hot Hands ones are pretty cheap and make a good alternative to hot water bottles as they don't go cold overnight. Shame they're single-use only.
